We love Gimpy! When we first saw this Bull Shark a few years ago, she had plastic wrapped around her body. We were able to get it almost completely removed before she left and we didn’t see her again that trip. When we saw her on a following trip, she had no plastic on her but she was deeply scarred and her left pectoral fin was permanently damaged, facing inward. She was very shy for a while, and very small. This year she has grown to outsize all our other sharks, and she is the BEST Bull Shark we have ever been around. She slowly cruises around the surface, almost like our local lemon sharks modeling for photos and completely trusting of us. It is amazing. Shark finning is one of the world’s most destructive fishing practices. According to the Hong Kong Shark Foundation, more than 100 million sharks are caught worldwide every year for their fins and other products, while more than 50% of the world’s shark fin is traded through Hong Kong alone. Now, a new study by researchers at the Florida International University (FIU) has found that much of the shark fin sold in Hong Kong contained unsafe levels of mercury, exceeding government limits. “The mercury levels are, on average, six to 10 times higher than what is considered a safe level of mercury,” says FIU student marine biologist Laura Garcia Barcia, one of the study’s co-authors. Repost from @atlantic.owt.collaborative • We don’t just encounter oceanic whitetips during our research expeditions. We’ve tagged tiger, blue, silky and reef sharks. During our time on or in the water we’ve also seen blue marlin, spearfish, mahi mahi, yellowfin tuna, beaked whales, dusky sharks, nurse sharks and a whale shark. In 2013 we captured and tagged a juvenile tiger shark out in the deep blue. A few days later we swam with the same tiger in shallow sandy bottom waters. Then we encountered the same shark again, swimming into Hawks Nest Marina. Three encounters in three different environments spanning 17 nautical miles over a period of a few days. Now this is interesting 🤔 a silky shark captured in offshore waters of Pakistan had a belly full of juvenile green turtle parts (check out pic 2)....to my knowledge this is the first evidence of silkies chowing on a sea turtle. I’m surprised this is not something that’s a common occurrence given the pelagic life stage of small sea turtles and that Mahi mahi that silkies often associate with under floating debris, sargassum etc are regular turtle gobblers. Megalodon hunting...prehistoric elephants! 😨 By PaleoGuy (James Kuether) The Megalodon, which went extinct millions of years ago, was the largest shark ever to prowl the oceans and one of the largest fish on record. The scientific name, Carcharocles megalodon, means giant tooth, and for good reason: Its massive teeth are almost three times larger than the teeth of a modern great white shark. The megalodons fossilized bones and teeth give scientists major clues about what the creature was like and when it died off. In 2014, a research group at the University of Zurich studied megalodon fossils using a technique called optimal linear estimation to determine their age. Their research, published in the journal PLOS ONE, found that most of the fossils date back to the middle Miocene epoch to the Pliocene epoch (15.9 million to 2.6 million years ago). All signs of the creatures existence ended 2.6 million years ago in the current fossil record, the authors wrote. For comparison, our earliest Homo sapiens ancestors emerged only 2.5 million years ago, during the Pleistocene epoch, according to the University of California Museum of Paleontology. A very small portion of the Zurich studys data — 6 out of 10,000 simulations — showed a 1% chance that these giant sharks could still be alive. Trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange came to a halt on Thursday because of a problem in the system for relaying market information. The Tokyo Stock Exchange said that all trading was stopped because of the problem, and will not resume for the rest of the day. Previous outages occurred when the “arrowhead system created by Fujitsu to handle its electronic trading became overwhelmed with too many orders at one time. Not even to our local waters much. I hope there is a chance to do this once more some day in the future. Until then, stay safe. It occurred to me that I started photographing this series five years ago and during all this time I’ve managed only one really good photosession. These, like so many other photographs I have posted from this lot, were shot on the island of Ponza, Italy, July 2016. It is a lovely little island in the Mediterranean, not completely ruined by tourism. (it’s a paradox, I know). The few days, or hours, really, I had for this stuff were the most fruitful I’ve ever had. The batch of photographs still offer some surprises. This is essentially a summer throwback post but none of these images have been posted anywhere before. The last photograph on the post is from below a cliff the local kids kept jumping in the sea from. I tried to capture their impact to the water with the sub but I was not entirely sure how close I could safely go. The light was bad because I was in the shadow side of the spot, and when I got to the sunny side, the kids went to lunch or something. Missed the best shot there, or not, I don’t know, but I think the idea comes through in this one too. - @avanaut on Instagram

They are caught incidentally and commercially targeted for their valuable fins in longline, bottom trawl, gillnet and hook-and-line fisheries. Great hammerheads are particularly threatened by the global shark fin trade because of the large size of their fins. More than 90 percent of great hammerheads die once they are captured by targeted or incidental fisheries. This high mortality rate, along with the shark’s coastal habitat and highly valued fin, makes the great hammerhead shark endangered with extinction.
