Hey hey, theyre The Monkees and #TodayinTVHistory, 1966, their show premiered. The series followed the adventures of four young men trying to make a name for themselves as a rock n roll band and starred David Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork. Somewhat inspired by the film A Hard Days Night, the show was conceived by aspiring filmmakers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider, considered early pioneers of New Hollywood (their production company would be involved with Easy Rider and The Last Picture Show). The show itself was very new and innovative, bringing a number of new-wave film techniques to series television. Novice director James Frawley (The Muppet Movie) to teach the four actors improv skills and help develop their characters. Interesting tidbit, the show re-used many sets and props from The Three Stooges short films made by Screen Gems. In its first season (1966-1967), the series fared well in the ratings, no doubt bolstered the band having several hit records, and The Monkees became a huge pop culture sensation. However, the public had not realized that the Monkees characters did not write or perform their own studio music, except to provide vocals. They did perform live, but when the truth became known there was backlash from many fans and music critics. It should be noted that this was common practice in the recording industry at the time and many notable session musicians of the era like the Wrecking Crew. Youve heard their work in songs like Jan And Dean’s ‘Surf City’, Simon And Garfunkel’s ‘Mrs Robinson’, Sonny And Cher’s ‘I Got You Babe’, and too many others to delve into. The network responded to the criticism by retooling the show in its second season with the Monkees now writing and performing much of their own music. By 1967, both NBC and the band felt the series had run its course, and the series was canceled in 1968, with the band actually writing their own series finale. #TheMonkees #DavyJones, #MickyDolenz, #MichaelNesmith #PeterTork #television - @paleycenter on Instagram

In 1966 Jeff Sykes designed and built his first racing scull that would assist him winning the Australian Interstate Sculling Championship – the Presidents Cup, held on the Huon River in Tasmania. That first boat was the beginning for what became Jeff Sykes & Associates Pty Ltd, now generally known simply as “Sykes”. Within two years of commencing in business, a Sykes boat was competing at the Mexico Olympics and within eight years, Sykes’s first rowing gold medal boat (also Australia’s first) was achieved at the 1974 World Championships (LM4-). Australia has won 4 Olympic Gold medals in Sykes. More than any other boat type. Today, 54 years later, Jeff’s passion and desire to be the best still lives on – that very first wooden Sculling boat and the 1974 Gold Medal boat still exist too. Jeff retired from the business in 2000. He still drops by regularly and can been seen rowing daily on the banks of the Barwon river. #sykedup #sykes #rowing #worldrowing #rowingaustralia #rowinghistory #australianrowing #crew #rowingteam #rudern #aviron #rowingrelated #justrowing #athlete #row2k - @sykes.au on Instagram

As Terry ran through the Atlantic provinces in April, May and June of 1980, school was still in session. Despite running an average of 26 miles a day, he was determined to tell his story and explain why he was running to as many people as he could. This meant that there were some very lucky schools who could boast of an in-school visit from Terry Fox! The students were enthralled by him; how he talked with ease about being a cancer survivor, his willingness to show how his artificial leg worked; his sense of humour; his dedication to his run. Donna Jordan has a vivid memory of seeing Terry on May 2 in Corner Brook, NL: “I was 10 years old and had an instant schoolgirl crush on this very handsome young man speaking strange words I’d never heard before; words such as ‘cancer’ and ‘amputation’ and ‘chemotherapy’. He spoke these words without fear. I was convinced he was the coolest boy I’d ever laid eyes on. He allowed us to touch his prosthetic leg and told us how his hair wasn’t curly before the chemo. In return, we sang ‘Thank you God for giving us Terry.’” Today, millions of Canadian students still relate to Terry, his dedication, his try. This picture I took on the set of the feature film Bergman Island by Mia Hansen-Love, it was shot over the last two summers on Fårö. Many people worked very hard on this film and it was supposed to premiere this May. I have been involved in this project over 4 years. Location scouting, script help, getting approval to shoot inside the Ingmar Bergman house, and acting for the first and last time. It’s been a great time. I hope we can get back to normal soon enough and to see it in cinemas soon. - @hampusnordenson on Instagram
