The first image is of the @trail.mole who found this old shovel blade while we were out exploring the darker parts of Mt. Seymour. Over the next 2 weeks we will sharing with you some of the submissions made to the Exposure 2021 Calls for Submissions. These works have been picked by the Exposure team to highlight the diverse and innovative submissions from photographers and visual artists around the world who incorporate, celebrate or challenge the photographic medium within their practice. Today we highlight George Rayner’s submission to the International Open Call. George (@george__rayner ) is an emerging British artist currently studying BA (Hons) Photography (@derbybaphoto ) at the University of Derby. Specializing in analog black and white print, a methodical and deliberate process that suits his style of work. He explores his relationship with his surroundings through materialistic allegory and quiet landscapes, in both still and moving image. These featured works are from George’s series ‘Hanging out to dry’. Photography has and will always have an affinity with death, from that of people in photographs being no longer with us, to the death of the photographer, who’s viewpoint we see or to the death of the moment which is now seemingly immortalized instill. “In dealing with death for the first time I use photography to work through and reflect my feelings by way of melancholic landscapes of places I find myself lost in thought or memory, using this as a way of airing my dirty laundry in an attempt at self-purification.“ To learn more about our calls for submissions, opportunities and awards, take a look at our website.
