➡️ Which one will you prefer? 😋 - ➡️ Tofu is made up of soy bean, Paneer is made up of milk. - ➡️ Tofu is less in protein and less in fat, Paneer is high in protein and high in Fat. - ➡️ Tofu is rich in iron, Paneer do not contain iron. - ➡️ Paneer is rich in calcium, Tofu has less calcium then paneer. - ➡️ People who are lactose intolerant, they can switch to tofu as they cannot digest dairy based products. - ➡️ People who are vegan can also use tofu as it is soy based. - ➡️ Rest of the people can use both, they both are good. Just make sure to track your macros. - ➡️ Tofu is less in calories and less in fat so you can use it while losing fat. We’ve all heard the phrase, “not your mom, not your milk” . A question we receive from patients transitioning off of dairy or avoiding it all-together is, “how will I get enough calcium?”. . . There are many non-dairy sources of calcium available (swipe through). Oftentimes the ‘cleaner’ non-dairy products, which do not contain additives or preservatives are unfortified. When we make or purchase these, we fortify the milks with calcium (both of which come from calcified seaweed). . Since kids & adults alike can have inconsistent appetites & eating habits, we recommend providing fortified calcium foods at least 1/2 of the week to avoid deficiency. . We also recommend enhancing the amount of fiber in their diets, which can improve absorption of a variety of nutrients, calcium included. . What does science tell us regarding the relationship between a #GoodGut & calcium? . A 2015 review of Diet, Gut Microbiome, & Bone Health reviewed success with increasing calcium levels in mice models by increasing short-chain fatty acid-producing fiber, which lead to overall improved gut health and structure and increased absorptive capacities. . In humans, similar findings were echoed in which using a specific type of fiber (GOS), “the benefit of this fiber affirmed the benefit of non-digestible fibers on bone”. . . Dairy is often a source of intestinal inflammation, which can decrease absorptive capacities, which can not only reduce overall nutrient status, but also one of the leading causes of gastrointestinal discomfort. . According to @physicianscommittee “Lactose intolerance is common, affecting about 95% of Asian Americans, 74% of Native Americans, 70% of African Americans, 53% of Mexican Americans, & 15% of Caucasians. Symptoms, which include upset stomach, diarrhea, & gas, occur because these individuals lack the enzyme lactase, which is needed to digest the milk sugar, lactose. Nursing children make enzymes that break down lactose, but as we grow, many of us lose this capacity… & lactose is not absorbed, but remains in the intestine where it causes symptoms.” . Nutrition has become a much bigger priority for many families, and there’s a lot more information available about how and what we eat. • Social media has compounded the pressure we might put on ourselves to serve our kids “healthy” foods. We feel like how our kid eats is a direct reflection of our parenting and our effort. It’s exhausting and overwhelming. • Please hear this today: nutrition is not black and white. There is so much room in the gray. Food represents more than just nourishment. • To be clear, there’s nothing “wrong” or “better” about either of these images - they’re more of a visual representation of the expectations we sense from others or put on ourselves about how our kids “should” eat. Food is food, and let’s be dang grateful when we have enough of it to eat. • I want to break it down to 5 tips to consider when it comes to your child’s nutrition: 1️⃣ Eat together when possible, and eat the same foods as a family if you can. 2️⃣ Offer water as a primary beverage, aside from any milk your kid might drink. 3️⃣ Try to serve a veggie or fruit with each meal, even if your kiddo isn’t eating it yet. 4️⃣ Make sure meals are satisfying by using oils and fats to cook, and offer some sort of protein food (can be plant-based) with each meal. 5️⃣ Offer your kiddo a daily vitamin D supplement with 600 IU vitamin D (12+ months throughout childhood). • There has been some good in how we have evolved over time, too: ➡️ Reusable lunch storage has come a LONG way. YOGURT COMPARISON Firstly, there are no right or wrong choices when it comes to yogurt (or any food for that matter), nutrition is not black and white. However I do think that some foods are more nutritionally favourable and should be consumed more often than others. For instance, Greek yogurt tends to be higher in protein and calcium and lower in saturated fat and calories. Whereas the coconut yogurt is quite low in protein and the calorie and saturated fat content is significantly higher. Flavoured yogurts also tend to be higher in sugar, this Gippsland yogurt has 15.1g per serve! Comment below When looking to bulk or gain muscle we want to be consuming enough calories to meet both our daily energy needs, but also consume extra calories to aid in the muscle repair from training & ultimately build lean muscle tissue. Simply put, if you want to gain weight you need to be in a caloric surplus. How to know how many calories? A good start is to find your maintenance calories (the calories you need to stay at the same weight) and add 5-10% extra. You can simply use an online calorie calculator to estimate your maintenance and add 5-10% to that number. You can then adjust each week as needed depending on your results, weight reducing or staying the same? You may need to add an extra 5-10%. It’s sometimes said that a dirty bulk or consuming excessive calories is better for putting on muscle mass, but you will also often gain a lot of fat at the same time (Garthe et al. 2012) and this may negatively impact performance. Beginning to add excess fat? You may need to reduce calories or increase your activity levels. Once we know our calorie targets we can begin to add foods into our day to meet those needs. By including calorie dense whole foods like the above it can help us reach our calorie needs for the day, while also supplying the body with a range of other nutrients. Whole grains & starchy vegetables provide slow-releasing carbohydrates throughout the day and stabilize blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates are our bodies preferred source of energy, so you’ll have more energy for training!
