Hey Mac. What’s up man. I just got home from your exhibit here in LA. It’s January 18th, 2020. I rode the bus there alone, looking out the window, listening to your albums the whole way there. I did my best not to choke up on the bus haha. I stood in line alone, for like almost 3 hours my dude. It was tough, but I wanted to do it. While I stood in line I kept running through your tapes and when Good News came on shuffle I couldn’t help but to break down. The next one was PA nights. And after that Best Day Ever. The waterworks hit me hard in line, staring up at the stars listening to your words ring true through my headphones. But REALLY, you should have seen it man, all ages, all races, all genders waiting out in the cold just to see some photos of you. People all over the world really love you Mac, they really do. But none most of all than us Yinzers. At the exhibit we were able to write you a message, and As I wrote my message for you I started crying all over the keyboard as I typed “I love you Mac”, the man assisting people with writing their messages embraced me. I think I might have been the only person he saw grieving today, the wounds still feel fresh. And to be honest I may need to soak my phone in rice after typing this out. But let me get this out man. You helped shape me into who I am, inspired me, taught me about where I’m from and reconnected me to a culture and a city that runs through my veins. I see a lot of myself in you and vice versa, as many people do. That’s why we were all so proud, you injected so much positivity and ambitions into Pennsylvania kids lives and I will carry that with me to the end of time. You touched so many people over the course of your career. But for me you touched me deeper than most things along my path have, I would have given anything to have met you. To have kicked back and rolled up, to have compared Pittsburgh tatts, to have picked your brain about music, and to have just kicked it laughing like a child. But I know that time will come. True Story There I was, yesterday, sat outside a cafe having a cup of tea. I look across a couple of tables and theres a guy staring at me, like, really intently staring. Its London, there are people who stare, who cares? But after 10 mins I was thinking its getting a bit weird so I looked up, made eye contact and made an affable hey, whats up? gesture. He gets up and then sits opposite me (yay), leans forward and takes a good look at me. (Admittedly I had thought there would be a waft of alcohol coming but there wasnt) Man Is your name Mark? Me nope Man Anthony? is your name Anthony? I shake my head ...pause... Man Are you from Barnsley? Me no, sorry He scratches his head, looking a little confused So who are you and where are you from then? Im Paul, Im from South East London, though from Kent originally. Hmmm, ok..sorry...ok...Ill leave you to your tea I can tell he doesnt completely believe me He gets up, takes a few steps away then circles back look, sorry to bother you, but Im looking for my son and trying to reconnect - I havent seen him or my ex-partner for like 15 years and I thought I might bump into them by chance Im really sorry about that, sorry I cant really help you. I hope you find him its just that you look like how he would have turned out like - you look like me To be honest I dont, (no offense to him) I mean you could make a slight case for it I guess in that we have a face, stubble, hair etc but when I saw him I hadnt thought I wonder if thats my Dad (Probably cos I know my Dad) He gets up again sorry, Ill leave you. Charles Williams Dec 31 1959 from QPA Queer Photo Archive of @jenniolsonsf For sure this is the best haircut of the week — the newspaper accounts of the time even pause to remark on this classic 1950s ducktail. This handsome hero went by the name Charles Williams while passing as a man: “Through about 25 states and at least four jails.” The newspaper stories of the time give us a sense of what Charles was navigating — reference is made to psychiatric help being suggested, followed by the seemingly forced reply, “I have no desire to be boy.” In one lengthy news story the parents are interviewed and although they are generally sympathetic they express the opinion that, “Barbara is a very mixed up girl… We want her to find herself.” Photos #1 & #2 are the original wire service image (the wire service 8 x 10 combines the two mug shots from the Golden, Colorado Jefferson County Jail), #3 is the November coverage of an initial arrest in which it sounds like Charles will return to their previous identity and then #4 reveals yet another arrest in December which leads us to suspect this is not just a passing phase. It’s not clear that this amazing person would have necessarily identified as butch. Tho we also don’t know they would have identified as trans in our contemporary understanding of that identity either. In the spirit of that wonderful uncertainty, here’s to opening up a space of common ground and shared experience in all our unique gender brilliance.
