Growing up inner city we normalize a lot of things that is not normal. For example It was normal to hear gun shots in the summer time is was very common. Seeing so and so getting booked, candling lighting, drug dealing and robbery, eco. It’s like everyday get on the gram I’m seeing a baby die here, teen shot here and I’m dishearten by the killing in my city. I could imagine my sister calling me and saying something happened to my nephews or my cousins calling me telling me about my lil cousins. Mental health matter and we have to normalize this shit. Last night I had a realization when I was reflecting on the previous years of my life with a fellow RDH that I wanted to share with you all. We were casually chit chatting about the day in life of a hygienist, and if I truly enjoy being a RDH. If you are wondering what my response was the answer is YES! I look forward to my team and my patients. I look forward to changing someone’s perspective on oral health and how it greatly effects someone’s overall health. I also love being mentally challenged and learning new things daily. And most of all, I look forward to attaining new perspectives from each of you through my platforms. @dogtorkristi shared a similar experience with her post on ig. Kristi is my inspiration for opening up about this very topic. I felt compelled to share the truth about attending my program to enlighten & uplift those in a similar boat of feeling self doubt. I despised my program. I was challenged by people in my program that made me question my morals. People who I thought were my friends in the program but actually weren’t. Many times I searched for their patients, put in volunteer work to speak Spanish- text/call THEIR patients. In the long run they were just using me to complete their clinic requirements. I did not enjoy my hygiene program & at one point I was convinced this wasn’t for me. Regularly negative things happened like conversations being exchanged between classmates about grade comparisons, placing each other against one another or in simple words some played too many high school games. I allowed those words from other people to affect me. What many don’t feel comfortable discussing on social media is how we may not feel “good enough” in others eyes. In other words, I felt JUST receiving an associates or being an average student wasn’t good enough. It fills my heart with such sadness to think I was ever insecure. I want to thank my core group of friends @lindsay_j_jones @kaytie_smith @msbritt_love for providing me with comfort & motivation to persevere. To me, happiness doesn’t come with the location. Hawaii is an amazing place that constantly puts a smile on my face. But that’s not the point here. Living abroad is. 🙌🏽 Ripping up those roots of yours and throwing yourself out into the unknown for enough time to make it just a little bit scary - that might be the most rewarding thing you could do for yourself. I’ve lived abroad three times and every time it’s been different, challenging and totally unexpected. And last but not least, something I’ll never forget. It has taught me more about myself, about people and about life in general than anything else and made me realize how I want to live my life. ✨ This, I believe, is really the most important thing in finding happiness. 👉🏽 Finding yourself and knowing what’s important to you. 💛 And yes. I will be the first person to tell you, that living abroad is also a lot of hard work and includes a whole bunch of feelings that have nothing to do with happiness.
