Leica has been creating cutaway (schnittmodell) cameras showcasing their exquisite design and construction for decades, the vast majority dating from the post-WWII era. Many ingenious freelancers have done the same. Cutaways and cross sections of Leica lenses are far less common, and fully functional cutaway lenses are exceedingly rare. A stunning example of the latter is the “Mint In Box” Leica 28-35-50mm f/4 E49 Tri-Elmar lens, serial number 03896964 recently offered on a leading online auction site at the breathtaking asking price of just under $10K. If that’s too rich for your blood, there’s actually another “lightly used” example for sale on another online action site at the bargain Buy It Now price of $9,750.00. Make no mistake, this lens, listed on the box as a “Funktionsmodell TRI-ELMAR M, catalog number 96 020,” is a rare bird indeed and it’s a visual and visceral tribute to the extraordinary engineering and craftsmanship that went into its design and construction. The lens, inscribed LEICA TRI-ELMAR-M 1:4/28-35-50 ASPH. (E55 or E49) was informally known as “MATE,” an acronym of Medium Angle Tri-Elmar. According to Leica Wiki standard (non-cutaway) versions were produced in black or chrome finish from 1998 to 2007 and beginning in 2001 (at about serial number 3920101) it was optically redesigned (tweaked) while retaining the 8-element, 6-group construction. It has an 8-bladed diaphragm, focuses down to 1 meter, and weighs in at a portable 12 ounces (340 g). Evidently total production (not counting the handful of functional cutaways) from 1996-2005 came to 8,575, so it qualifies as a low production lens, but used examples are readily available. Based on user reviews it’s an excellent performer and still a fine choice for Leica M shooters looking for a compact, flexible walkaround lens. Yes, pristine examples of this unique lens are not exactly cheap, but you can snag one for less than half the price of the ultra-rare cutaway version featured here. The Lightning II will be delivered to the Koninklijke Luchtmacht (KLu, Royal Netherlands Air Force) but is facing, together with sistership F-013, some construction issues that have to be solved first. In the meantime, all four F-35As from 323sq, based at Leeuwarden air base (the Netherlands) have flow together on 1 October 2020. The FACO Division also produces full wings for aircraft assembled in U.S., using composite and metal structures manufactured in Foggia and Nola plants (Aerostructures Division) and Venegono (Aircraft Division). The PAK FA (Russian: ПАК ФА, Russian: Перспективный авиационный комплекс фронтовой авиации, Perspektivny Aviatsionny Kompleks Frontovoy Aviatsii, literally Prospective Airborne Complex of Frontline Aviation) is a fifth-generation fighter programme of the Russian Air Force. The T-50 is the name of the prototype aircraft (though it is unlikely it will be the name for the production aircraft) designed by Sukhoi for the PAK FA programme. The aircraft is a stealthy, single-seat, twin-engine jet fighter, and will be the first operational aircraft in Russian service to use stealth technology. It is a multirole fighter designed for air superiority and attack roles. EARLY WARNING With the world’s largest carrier fleet, the Japanese navy ruled the Pacific in the first half of 1942, as naval tactics were changing from ships pounding away with guns to aerial battles fought by carrier-based aircraft. At Midway, the opposing fleets never came within sight of each other. — Having been tipped off to Japanese plans by U.S. cryptographers, the Navy sent Consolidated PBY Catalina flying boats from Midway to search hundreds of miles of ocean. It was a Catalina crew who spotted the Japanese fleet. On the morning of June 4, about 200 miles northwest of Midway, a PBY reported the first contact with the Japanese carrier force.
