Sloth bears are important seed dispersers for several tree and plant species. They scatter the seeds of the fruits they eat far and wide, helping floral species to regenerate. However, they can also disperse seeds without consuming them. We started noticing in our camera-trap images that tens of seeds would be stuck on the shaggy coats of these bears and their cubs! A photographer has captured high-quality images of a rare black leopard at a wilderness camp in Africa. Wildlife photographer Will Burrard-Lucas wrote in a blog post published Wednesday that he has been fascinated by stories of black panthers and their elusive nature since childhood. He began conceptualizing his dream of capturing an image of the large, hidden cats after noticing photos of them emerging out of the Kabini Forest in Karnataka, India, a couple of years ago, he said. After the experience, Burrard-Lucas learned through friends about a black leopard living at the Laikipia Wilderness Camp in Kenya, and he immediately set out to find it. Once the owners of the camp confirmed theyd seen several black leopards over the years, Burrard-Lucas decided to visit, and learned as much as he could about the leopards habits and territory, he wrote. After deploying a series of camera traps, a high-quality DSLR camera and two or three flashes over several nights, the last trap he checked contained images of a pair of eyes surrounded by inky darkness, he said. This Russian Tiger Day explore the fabulous conservation work that we support in Russia to protect the Amur tiger. This project - Amur Tiger Conservation in Lazovsky Zapovednik (ZSL Russia) - aims to develop a holistic programme that integrates anti-poaching management with tiger monitoring. ⠀ ZSL works with Lazovsky Zapovednik (LZ), in collaboration with Phoenix Fund and WCS, and more recently in Zov Tigra (ZT) to:⠀ Assess the effectiveness of the conservation strategies by supporting long term population monitoring of Amur tigers in the protected areas ⠀ Reinforce the Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) approach to enforce anti-poaching, including the use of SMART software, rapid response teams, and Forest Eyes Initiative, which uses camera trap technology to monitor illegal human trespassing in protected areas.⠀ Build conservation and wildlife health capacity within Far Eastern Russia by monitoring disease threats, training veterinary students and contributing veterinary expertise for tiger and leopard rehabilitation at PRNCO tiger centre or with other government authorities to minimize the threat of disease and aid in rehabilitations to wild tigers under care and future reintroduced leopards.⠀ Continue public outreach and communication efforts, both through events at local schools nurturing an appreciation for tigers and support for their conservation; and developing publications on long-term tiger population monitoring since 2007.⠀ Find out more and support this important work on our website by following the links in our bio.⠀ #RussianTigerDay #Russia #amurtiger #tiger #wildtiger #wildlifeprotection #antipoaching #monitoring #conservation #ZSL @officialzsl - @conservewildcats on Instagram

Organizations such as Conservation Northwest have taken the matter into their own hands The Loomis forest for example has an extremely high population of Lynx. Conservation Northwest has put protections on the Loomis forests saving 25,000 acres of Lynx habitat. They also cannot be hunted in these areas. While we were out at the land this weekend, I went ahead and pulled cards from the trail cams. We ended up with some really great shots where it almost looked like these animals were posing for the camera, including some animals we haven’t seen out there before. Our hearts are saddened by the loss of Ronald Dean Larsen Nielsen, a pioneer in conservation and sustainable cattle ranching in Latin America. San Miguelito, in Santa Cruz Bolivia, was sold to my family in 1973 because of its extreme “jaguar problem”. The owners claimed to have lost hundreds of cattle per year due to the Jaguar attacks. Despite those numbers, my father decided that cattle and jaguars could coexist if certain measures were taken. In the late ’80s after talking to a biologist about his jaguar problem, he explained to my father that if the Jaguar has more of his natural prey species available to hunt the number of jaguar-cattle attacks would diminish. Since 1988 we have had a no-hunting policy in San Miguelito. The most difficult people to convince of the no-hunting policy were the cowboys that had been used to eat bush meat on a regular basis as part of the daily meat source on the ranch. In order to compensate for the lack of meat, we started slaughtering our own cattle for them to ensure that the cowboys were not hunting while they were out on horseback. We have some sad news to report. 😔 We’ve learned that an adult female bobcat and a subadult male mountain lion have both died directly from the effects of anticoagulant rat poisons (or anticoagulant rodenticides, also known as ARs). Link to press release in bio. . Both deaths occurred in the Simi Hills and Santa Susana Mountains north of the Santa Monica Mountains this year. We recently received the necropsy reports. . This marks just the second time in our 24-year study that a bobcat, in this case B-372, has been determined to have died directly from the effects of these poisons, and the first time in 23 years. P-76, a subadult male captured in Northridge late last year and jointly studied by NPS and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), died of anticoagulant toxicosis in the Santa Susana Mountains. . “We basically never see this in bobcats, so this is an important finding” said Joanne Moriarty, a biologist who has worked on bobcat research for more than 15 years. According to Moriarty, an examination performed during her capture in January determined that she was in good health, and that she had given birth in the past. . Researchers have seen coagulopathy (uncontrolled bleeding) leading to death in coyotes, foxes, and mountain lions in the study area, but typically not bobcats. . P-76 is the sixth collared mountain lion to die of coagulopathy and the third in the last two years. He was captured and collared by California Department of Fish & Wildlife officers in November 2019 in an urban neighborhood in Northridge, just outside of Los Angeles. . In the case of P-76, his collar went on “mortality mode” the night of January 29, 2020. His carcass was recovered the following morning by NPS and CDFW biologists in the Santa Susana Mountains, north of Highway 118. The Wildlife Initiative has recently gone forward with a research project where they trapped five Lynx and put the collars on them. The collars will fall off after a few months but the purpose of them is to track the movements of the Lynx. If their movements can be traced, Zoologists can better understand their patterns and aid them. This form of trapping is completely legal and the Lynx are released without harm after getting the collar. The results will be out this fall (Kowitz). Lynxes are being considered for reintroduction in Ireland as part of an extensive re-wilding project. These magnificent wildcats used to be widespread across the island of Ireland once upon a time, but were driven to domestic extinction due to loss of habitat and human hunting. In 1934, fossil remains of a young Eurasian lynx turned up amongst the findings excavated. An old male snow leopard eats a domestic sheep killed during a snowstorm near a village in Indias Spiti Valley. Studies done by scientists at @snowleopardtrust show that even in the presence of abundant wild prey like blue sheep and Ibex, snow leopards still opportunistically hunt livestock. Its this soft spot for an easy meal that, at least partly, has brought these cats into conflict with humans. All creatures in these remote, rugged, brutally cold mountains, humans and snow leopards included, live with a very thin margin for survival. A familys loss of a sheep—or a donkey or yak calf—results in the loss of precious rupees and calories. An innovative insurance program introduced by wildlife biologist Charu Mishra in the 1990s and implemented and administered by locals has reduced the threat to families and their hostility toward the cats. More bears! Were excited to share this daytime footage of a young male black bear checking the surrounding area for scent, following close on the heels of a second bear. Black bears have an incredible sense of smell (about seven times more powerful than a bloodhound’s) and use scent to communicate with other bears. One way they leave scent behind is by using the scent glands on the bottom of their feet, stomping and twisting their feet into the ground as they walk. They may also bite, scratch and rub against designated bear marking trees. How do you identify a bear marking tree? They are generally young, fragrant trees whose tops have been bitten or snapped off. This weeks black bear death on I-65 demonstrates need for wildlife corridors and safe crossing designs. ⠀ ⠀ A black bear was killed by a motor vehicle Tuesday morning crossing I-65 south of Louisville. Black bear are rare in central Kentucky. This accident demonstrates the need to establish wildlife corridors with protected natural land to allow bear, bobcat and other animals to move safely about in their search for food, shelter, and mates. ⠀ ⠀ Highways and other congested roads designed and built with culverts, underpasses, and wildlife overpasses keep transportation infrastructure from being death traps for mammals, reptiles and other creatures. Over 6,000 motor vehicle collisions with animals reported in Kentucky in 2018/2019, resulted in 6 people killed and 24 seriously injured. Designing roadways and highways to accommodate wildlife movement will save money and lives. ⠀ ⠀ Bernheim is proud of our efforts to establish protected wildlife corridors.
