“Altețea sa”, altița, cea mai vizibilă parte a iei sau cămășii tradiționale, ascunde înțelesuri multe și indicii despre credințele, personalitatea, valorile și aspirațiile femeii care o poartă. I just realised I haven’t posted about my professional life/job on here in a hot minute & although the not-so-subtle “Dr Alina Khalid” in my bio leaves no room for confusion, it never hurts to reiterate the fact. Plus I’ve gained 3-4K new followers in the last couple of weeks so I feel like reintroductions are necessary. I did my MBBS from Nishtar Medical University & Hospital, a Government institute & am currently appointed here as a House Officer in the Pathology Department. Now, before you reflexively go “Pathology main bhi koi kam hota hai?” I’d advise you humble yourself & realise that you’re looking at the person who’s doing atleast 70-80% of all the Peripheral Films & Fluid examinations advised in the entire hospital, which, all your consultants depend on for reaching on a definite diagnosis. You can’t simultaneously demand a service & then disregard those providing it for you. I have no idea when Nishatrians & their superiority complex will be cured but, photographed here(not so candidly) in the Pathology department, looking at & reporting a rather beautiful Peripheral smear of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in a 19 year old patient, away from all the drama & the politics that goes on in each ward, I’m happier than ever. So before you feel the need to wonder again whether Pathology main koi kam hota hai ya naheen, remember, jis nay na karna ho woh to Medicine main bhi kam naheen karta. Uski to har ward main extensions lag jati hain aur explanations nikal ati hain. Yet here I am, proud as all hell because my senior told me today she never interacts with the House Officers in Pathology because they’re “kamchor” yet you do everything that’s expected of you & more. The most crucial part about healing is learning to love yourself again. Most times, this is the most ignored part as well. You see when you heal, when you get over the trauma of being a victim or when you get over the realisation of being a prosecutor there will come nights, no let me amend that, most nights will either have you too exhausted from the day to think about anything but sleep or you’ll spend them glued to the mobile screen telling yourself you really like rewatching friends or gossip girl when in fact it is just a robotic routine to get through the dark hours of the darkest days. There will come days, perfectly normal days, and you’d suddenly grip the stair railing for support as the gut wrenching feeling of something not sewed up dripping open inside your rib cage nags the base of your neck. Your mind will eat bits of itself while your face will plaster the brightest smile in as you sit amongst 20 people in the middle of a restaurant. Am I good enough? Am I worthy enough? Why me? What had I done? How did I get here? Why can’t I be happy? Drip.. drip... drip... constant questions like water dripping from a broken tap!# In life, some find lasting happiness in one form or another, but there have been many who never healed, never got better. At least not immediately... But here is the silver lining, the process is slow but the process is nurturing. Because once you fall in love with yourself again, and you will- I promise, once you taste the freedom of being in love with yourself, of putting your being top priority, of having the power of saying, “ This is toxic for me so I must let go”, “This is hurting me so I need to part ways”, “This is what makes me grow as a person so I must pursue it”, it will be hard to not fall in love. With yourself. And the right kind of love will make you more empathetic. More kind. More understanding. Because then you will see your struggle in everybody around.
