The Notion of Family, LaToya Ruby Frazier. 👁️ Frazier incisively explores the legacy of racism and economic decline in Americas small towns, as embodied by her hometown Braddock, Pennsylvania. Her work considers the impact on the community and her family, creating a statement both personal and truly political—an intervention in the history of a region dominated by stories of Andrew Carnegie and Pittsburghs industrial past and that largely ignores those of black families and the working classes. Unlearning for Freedom. We are all conditioned by the society that we are raised in. Here in the US, systemic oppression and marginalization of Black and brown bodies for capital is at it’s core. White Supremacist thinking has “justified” CENTURIES of violence. These ideas are structural and are steeped into the culture. There is a spectrum of harm and a spectrum of bias. Challenge yourself. . I was born in Manila, a former US colony with deep seated colorism and classism which is still persists today.
