In cases of unstable male relationships, they are either so deeply connected to their mothers that its unhealthy, or they have been so far removed that they havent developed the respect that comes from being raised by an awesome lady—which my mom is. If I crossed her, she would set me straight. You have to look at the individual circumstance, but you really cant get away with being a dick in current society. There is no cultural hub that facilitates it. If I was put in a room with someone acting aggressively or inappropriately, I would point to his sister, aunt, or mom and say, these are the people you should be standing up for. There should be no surprises when it comes to the financial toll cancer patients experience. According to a survey conducted in 2017 by CancerCare, 70 percent of patients have experienced financial hardship from cancer-related expenses. The financial burden of cancer is exacerbated because patients do not receive information on the costs of care or resources to help them manage these costs. In the survey, patients identified gaps in information regarding organizations that provide financial assistance or navigation, and information on costs of treatment before beginning that treatment. We hear many cancer patients talk about surprise medical bills. We hear many people talk about going medically bankrupt because of high costs of care. In a country where cancer is expected to affect 1.8 million lives with around half of those succumbing to the disease, the last thing that can possibly occur is people shying away from getting follow up care. I have alopecia. Alopecia actually just means hair loss. There are lots of different types (androgenetic alopecia, frontal fibrosing alopecia, telogen effluvium, etc). Too many to list here! I started out with alopecia areata which was patches of hair loss. This is a type where the immune system, for whatever reason, starts to see the hair follicle as a threat & starts to attack it. The immune system cells kind of swarms around the hair follicle preventing the hair from growing. I progressed on from just the patches and lost everything, my hair, my eyebrows, eyelashes, body hair. At this point it was then called alopecia (areata) universalis. Total loss of all hair everywhere. As Im currently sporting half an eyebrow and 90% of my eyelashes Im probably somewhere between alopecia universalis and alopecia (areata) totalis (which is total loss of hair from one area). . My hair loss started as two 10p size patches in May 1995 (age 11). One on each side of my head. They gradually grew over a period of about 6 months. I lost maybe 40/50% of my hair and then they started to fill in. I seem to remember having good regrowth by the January and being able to wear a pony tail again! The following May (1996) it started to fall out pretty rapidly and I lost about 80% over a two week period, the rest followed not long after. I didnt have it for a while and then it started to grow back. By the year 2000 (age 16) I had probably 95% of it back. This continued to fill in over the next few years. But then at the end of 2003 the patches started again. I lost maybe 30/40% over a few months but AGAIN (!) they started to fill in. And AGAIN, a few months later it all came out pretty rapidly over the course of a couple of weeks (age 20). Since then Ive had it try to grow back a few times but nothing more than a small patch of hair. I did have one eyebrow (just the one!) grow back for about five years which is the period of time that this photo was taken! . I never thought I would have to make a post like this again, and it breaks my heart doing so. I’ll do my best to keep this message short and sweet. Many of you may know, I suffer from a disease called Alopecia Areata. Alopecia is a no cause no cure disease that causes your immune system to attack your hair follicles, causing little to severe hair loss depending on the person. Unfortunately for me, mine has become severe again. I was diagnosed about a year ago, came out of nowhere and I lost about 90% of my hair. I began doing treatment and have been doing it since. I was having an amazing amount of regrowth, it had stopped falling out, and it seemed like it was just a one time thing that my body needed to get out of the way for whatever reason. I was wrong. Throughout the past month or so, I have had an unbearable amount of hair loss. At first, I thought it was just in my head and I was just imaging these bald spots getting bigger. Until I started visibly seeing the hair fall out again. I can’t begin to explain how traumatic it is to physically watch your hair fall out. People say “it’s just hair,” “hair doesn’t define you,” and while that might be true, no one has any room in telling me how it feels when they have not experienced it themselves. It is so much more than just hair loss. And I will be the first to admit that I am not handling it well this time at all... It is tearing me apart every single day, I don’t recognize myself anymore, I just feel desperate and unhappy and alone. I think this time is a lot harder than the first because I was so convinced it wasn’t going to happen again. I had doctors, friends, family, etc. continuously telling me it was just a one time thing. And then it wasn’t. With that being said, I have decided to once again shave the remaining hair that I had on my head. It is too disturbing to continue life covered in my own hair all the time. I am devastated to have to do this again. I am embarrassed and ashamed and just sad... Thank you to everyone who has been with me on this crazy journey and supported me through it all. Wie oft habe ich meine Haare verflucht. Beim Radfahren, wenn mein Zopf nicht unter den Helm passte. Wenn sie mir ins Gesicht fielen, obwohl ich den Anblick von langen, offenen Haaren im Spiegel mochte. Sie störten mich duschen, wenn sie nicht nass werden durften. Oder wenn sie im Winter Ewigkeiten zum Trocknen brauchten. Ich hasste Tage, an denen sie einfach nicht so lagen, wie ich es mir vorstellte. Oder an Tagen, an denen ich die seltene Geduld für eine Frisur hatte, die aber nie länger als 30 Minuten hielt, weil meine Haare einfach zu dick und zu schwer waren. . Einen Buzzcut konnte ich mir nie vorstellen- ich fand es einfach nicht schön. Weil es so ungewöhnlich war, für eine Frau. Weil wir alle täglich so viele Frauen mit langen Haaren sehen, dass unser Gehirn alles andere komisch findet. . Ich bin froh, dass meine Haare jetzt ab sind. Was für eine Erleichterung! Keinen Tag habe ich meine langen Haare vermisst. 10 Tage hat es gedauert, bin ich mich im Spiegel erkannt habe und schön fand. Ich bin jetzt viel selbstbewusster. Unlike other cancers that form masses in the body, leukemia is in the bones and the blood, so it travels throughout. The only way to treat leukemia is with intensive chemo therapy treatment for a long period of time. My family has a whole new respect for what it means to be a fighter, and what it’s like to feel helpless in the face of your loved ones diagnosis and day to day fight. We are so proud of her. Through every procedure, injection, pill, not to mention the numerous hospital stays (oh and appendicitis), she still manages to laugh and ask us how we’re doing. She’s a marvel. As we wrap up Childhood Cancer Awareness month, I wanted to share her story. There is just one month dedicated to raising awareness, but this is Geneviève’s life, every day during her treatment course of 3 years and something she will live with forever. The effects of COVID-19 are still very much alive for people like my sister who is incredibly immunocompromised (if she contracted this virus it would likely kill her), and for my mother who’s income depends largely on hospitality. If you can afford to contribute to my sisters GoFundMe or if you feel comfortable sharing her story it would be the ultimate act of compassion to my family. Only a matter of weeks ago I was told I have “triple negative” breast cancer. This accounts for only 15% of breast cancer today and is much more aggressive than more commonly found breast cancers. It’s also more prevalent in younger women. I am 36 years old. Theres no other way I can explain it other than surreal. It was numbing, acceptance and disbelief all simultaneously. A strange yet familiar feeling as my mother 10 years prior had died of cancer. Strangely a part of me felt like I had been here before. But I hadn’t. Not knowing what to think, feel or do, we processed moment by moment before rallying our loved ones and working together to educate ourselves. Alongside some incredible specialists and on our own, we explored as many treatment options that we could in a short duration of time from all over the globe. From alternative clinics, to home remedies with incredible success stories and great early research. Finding a specific treatment plan suited to my type of cancer that resonated with my core beliefs of ‘natural healing’ was a much bigger hurdle than I anticipated. Some treatments weren’t going to be aggressive enough to match the pace of this cancer. It was a growing concern. I came to the conclusion I wasn’t comfortable navigating purely alternative treatments despite believing in them as a whole. Nor was I comfortable going soley with the mainstream approach for a multitude of reasons I’ve felt for many years. I decided an ‘integrative approach’ was where I felt my sweet spot was. I will share more info on this over the coming weeks for anyone who may be interested in finding out more. 2 weeks ago I started neoadjuvant chemotherapy, something I told myself I would never have done prior to being in this situation. I’m grateful that I wasn’t pushed into anything. After educating myself I was able to find my peace with it before it started and the process so far has been better then in anticipated.* touch wood. Being Bald is The Most Rock n’ Roll Thing I’ll Ever Do The knife was dull. It was probably designed for spearfishing, to make quick cuts while 10ft under water, with a smooth, sharp edge, and a serrated section toward the handle. It was sandy, slightly rusted, and probably the worst tool I could have chosen for its next use. I channeled some of Mulan’s bravery and grabbed my curly, sandy, blonde-ing locks of my planning-to-grow-it-out-to-my-waist hair, and sawed it off with the fishing knife. As short as I could go. How did that feel? One of my friends asked. My response came out slowly: So much better than carrying the weight of the fear of losing it. Two weeks after the first round of chemo, my fishing knife-pixie cut hair was falling. I invited some friends over to help me shave my head. The night before, I sat in my room, looking around at all the gifts people had sent me. Well-wishing cards, pink T-shirts, weed gummies, flowers. I crawled out my window onto the roof to watch the sunset alone, and my armor shattered. All of my strength I’d built up—my shield of bravery and courage I carried—vanished there on the roof that night. I spent the rest of the evening hours alone, crying in my room. Unable to write, read, distract myself with music or TV. Trapped in a dark psychedelic psychosis that kept me awake but submerged in bad dreams until early the next morning. When I woke up, I started writing about this dark, twisting vortex of a rabbit hole I’d gone down the night before, and it took shape in lyrics. My band (@queentide.band) turned it into a song called The Situation. It had a thrashy, punchy, hard rock n’ roll feel to it, influenced by the Pixies and the Rolling Stones. It was the exact emotion I felt the night before as I stared in the mirror and cried as I tried to imagine myself bald (tip: don’t do this). But then I remembered something my aunt told me when I shared my fears of becoming un-beautiful: Creativity is a much better mirror than the one on the wall.
