On this day in 1957, nine students in Little Rock, Arkansas attended their first full day of classes at Central High School. Escorted by the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division under the orders of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefferson Thomas, Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Minnijean Brown, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mothershed, and Melba Pattillo Beals entered the Central High School as its first African American students. The students faced angry mobs and the threat of violence on their very first day at Central High School. 🇳🇬 On this day, sixty years ago, the UK Parliament’s Nigerian Independence Bill entered into force, thus marking the 1st of October 1960 as #NigeriaIndependenceDay. Though the autonomous region of the Nigerian Federation had existed since 1954, formal colonial rule was still in place until the Federation was formed with three self governing regions and a federal government led by Nnamidi Azikiwe as President, and Abubakar Balewa as Prime Minister.⠀ ⠀ The legacy of colonial rule did not end there, however. The hundreds of ethnic groups and the enmities that had been fostered by British rule led to endless conflicts between the three regions. The Yoruba in the west, Igbo in the east, and Hausa-Fulani in the north seemed irreconcilable. The adoption of the 1963 constitution that formed The First Republic of Nigeria, and the greater divisions of power that followed did little to ease the turmoil in the long term. The declaration of independence by the Biafran region swiftly brought the country into a brutal civil war from 1967-1970. ⠀ ⠀ As is often the case with the postcolony, to apply Neoliberal forms of governance to attempt to enforce the idea of a ‘nation’ on peoples with differing ways of being, who have been forced to compete for what remains after being dispossessed by colonial rule, always leads to turmoil. ⠀ ⠀ Today, 60 years on, there have been successive coups, dictatorships and insurgencies - all a direct result of the colonial process and the arbitrary borders it designed. Still, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Nigeria. Great news out of Tanzania. Elephant numbers have stabilized in a key landscape that was known for rampant poaching just a few years ago. This according to a massive wildlife survey by @TheWCS and Tanzania’s Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI). . An estimated 20,145 elephants were recorded during the 20-day survey, which covered 29,855 square miles of the Katavi-Rukwa and Ruaha-Rungwa landscape and included parks, game reserves, and other protected and conservation areas. . Far fewer elephant carcasses were found compared to 2015 when the last survey took place, indicating that poaching is now being brought under control – though a few were still detected in some areas. This will be a virtual meeting on zoom ( Id. 844 5904 5268) --- We want to open this space of non-judgment so that men can come together with experiences and perspectives they have, that May have caused harm to their loved ones, specifically in terms of self-image and harm against women. This will not be a meeting to beat yourself up or be judged, but it is a meeting that is asking us to examine our behavior and walk away with tips and inspiration on how to deal with mental health as it relates to masculinity. Fleet-footed Mia Guillergan is living proof that big things come in small packages. The Mosman schoolgirl made history over the weekend when she broke the 5000m world record for 11-year-olds and she’s already dreaming of the Olympics. The pint-sized trailblazer raced around the Narrabeen track at her weekly Manly Warringah Little Athletics meeting in 17:41.03 minutes, smashing the record set by American Kathy Kiernan in 1977 by 18 seconds. In drier months, they will dig for water using their tusks creating makeshift watering holes that benefit countless species. It took two whole years after President Abraham Lincoln declared the abolition of slavery on January 1, 1863, for the end of one of the darkest chapters in American history to take hold. The Emancipation Proclamation marked the end of the legalized institution of slavery in America, but in the small town of Galveston Island, Texas, black slaves had been carrying on their lives of bondage and subjugation, oblivious to the fact that they were actually free. On June 19th, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger and his band of Union soldiers (who had been traveling throughout the South for two years spreading the word) arrived at Galveston Island to tell the last remaining slaves in the United States that they were finally free. #juneteenth #becauseofthem #ourancestors - @verbfitness on Instagram

Sheikhpur Gudha also known as Purva Gaaon, is a small village situated on the Banks of Yamuna river in the Jalaun district of Uttar Pradeshs Bundelkhand region. Today, this village is known as the village of #PhoolanDevi. . For many marginalised women like me, Phoolan Devi is an inspiration. In a scenario where justice is delayed & denied what Phoolan did was right! She snatched a small part of justice for herself, writes #DALITWOMENFIGHTs @riyasingh.91. . She continues, Phoolan Devi was gang-raped by 22 Thakur men in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. All those 22 rapists were shot dead by Phoolan and her gang on 14th February 1981. . Phoolan Devi surrendered to the Madhya Pradesh police in 1983 & faced the criminal trial. She also successfully contested the Lok Sabha elections on a Samajwadi Party ticket in 1996. . Phoolan was assassinated on 25th of July, 2001 outside her residence in New Delhi. Sher Singh Rana, the murderer of Phoolan Devi was awarded a life-sentence along with the fine of Rs. 1,00,000 INR in 2014, after a ten-year-long criminal trial in court. . Phoolan Devi is a towering icon of resistance for all the marginalised women who have been a survivor and a victim of caste-rapes in this country. . A few years ago, DWFs team got the opportunity to meet Ramkali Devi (2nd pic), Phoolan Devis younger sister, who unfortunately is not with us anymore. She, along with her mother, Moola Devi, was living at the extreme brink of poverty, with a monthly earning as less as 400 rupees. A report by Times Of India states her saying, Its only during elections that politicians come to meet us. They exhibit me on stage. I get Rs 200 for it. But in the last couple of years, I have refused most of them. Thats because I started getting veiled threats from other candidates. I thought its better not to associate myself with any political party for a few hundred rupees. . Moola Devi still resides in the village in a miserable state with no help or support. . Today, on Phoolan Devis death anniversary, while we remember the resilience and storm she was, lets also not forget the ones she is survived by, and the apathy we treat women from marginalised communities with. - @dalitwomenfight on Instagram
