Ele é considerado ‘Em perigo’ de extinção pela @iucssc, desde 2009 devido ao declínio de sua população, principalmente, devido a perda de habitat. . Ao contrário do pavão indiano, aquele azul e mais conhecido por nós brasileiros, os machos e fêmeas do pavão verde são bastante semelhantes na aparência, especialmente na natureza, mantendo aquela grande cauda colorida. No macho, ela pode alcançar até 2 m de altura e é decorada com manchas, enquanto nas fêmea são cobertas de verde e muito mais curtas. . As penas do pescoço e do peito são verdes iridescentes e lembram escamas, e ainda contam com tons de azul. As fêmeas possuem penas no pescoço com a cor cobre nas pontas. Na face possuem duas listras brancas e azuis e, ao lado da orelha, um crescente amarelo a laranja. . Lindo demais, não? .
