#dallenostrecollezioni Un giovinetto in abiti e acconciatura quattrocenteschi, di certo un rampollo di una famiglia in vista: questo ritratto aulico, già supposto opera di Domenico Gagini dal Di Marzo che lo identificava con il busto di Nicolò Antonio Speciale, figlio del pretore Pietro, che lo scultore si era impegnato a scolpire nel 1463, presenta invece una forma chiusa ed un fare naturalistico che gli ha valso da parte di più recenti contributi critici lattribuzione ad un artista influenzato da modi veneti e lauraneschi. #dallenostrecollezioni Nella sala IV, in dialogo con il celeberrimo Busto di Gentildonna del Laurana, è questa Madonna del Latte di Domenico Gagini, altro protagonista della scultura in Sicilia del secondo Quattrocento; si coglie immediatamente nel confronto lo stile sciolto e pittorico del Gagini, che tanta fortuna ebbe in Sicilia presso la committenza soprattutto religiosa. Particolare attenzione è stata posta nella resa del ricco panneggio e del decoro del manto e delle vesti, dai bordi lavorati; i volti sono caratterizzati dalla ricerca di naturalezza espressiva, accentuata dalla policromia. Il rapporto affettuoso tra madre e figlio è suggerito dal chinarsi della testa e dal leggero sbilanciamento della Madonna verso il bambino. SI tratta insomma di una interpretazione del divino umana ed immediata, in linea con la visione antropocentrica della cultura rinascimentale. Goethe had left his original Roman replica in Rome. Congratulations to Agnieszka Nalazek on her recent QEST Scholarship. Agnieszka first developed her tool skills working with her partner to restore salvaged and cheaply bought boats for re-sale, and she has since undertaken repairs, woodworking and decorating on everything from narrowboats to speedboats to cruisers. The Polish-born maker is now applying these talents to making bowed instruments and is currently undertaking the FdA Historic Craft Practices – Musical Instruments course @westdeancollege. Agnieszka believes there is no better place to learn to make early instruments accurately as, unlike other colleges, West Dean teaches students how to make elements in the Baroque style from scratch. Funding from QEST will support Agnieszka in her final year at West Dean, which is entirely practice-based and will allow her to refine and consolidate her skills. For a #MuseumMomentOfZen please enjoy this work from the SBMA collection! ✨Larkin Goldsmith Mead, Jr. was born in Vermont, but spent 50 years working in Florence. He met his wife in Venice, and used her as the model for this allegorical portrait of the watery city. This subject was apparently quite popular with collectors, as it exists in at least ten marble versions. Venezia is shown wearing a tiara decorated with beads and a scalloped shell with a small gondola on top of it.
