EDIT: Thanks to (eh hem) more awesome women on my insta feed, I was educated as to the actual reason this “challenge” even exists. I thought it was just a great way to pay homage to female empowerment, and to post photos where we feel strong and confident. BUT, obviously that’s opaque and just another example of Instagram convoluting an actual cause. The black-and-white photo challenge originated in Turkey as a way to show solidarity to women who have been killed there, and to raise awareness to the high rates of femicide. I’m finding that Instagram makes it so easy to take action with good intentions, but that these “actions” can be made without any real education, like these photo challenges. The cool thing is that everything can be a learning experience, and we can take these situations as motivation to be better. In my comment below, I’ve shared some links that provide great resources for giving tangible support to women! ———- Growing up in Jackson was very cool for so many reasons, but I think my favorite reason is the sheer number of strong, badass, smart, no-fuckery women that live there that I got to have as role models. There was no shortage of women to support me in skiing, in school, and in being a chick who stands up straight and just simply will not take the shit of any man who tells her she’s less than what she is. I wouldn’t be where I am now without all the feminine empowerment I got back home, and continuing to learn from my divine community of female friendships from all around the world is a very very cherished thing. Sometimes I feel pretty sad/angry about the stuff going on in my life. Mostly about those that are no longer in it. 👱🏼♂️🐶🐶 I find pedaling my bike to be a pretty good outlet for those feelings. 2017 was such a good travel year. I ran my first half marathon outside of a national forest and spent the rest of that trip in Ahwahnee (now known as Yosemite Valley), the ancestral land of the Ahwahneechee people. Later that summer, we camped in the Santa Fe National Forest and stopped at White Sands, home to the Mescalero Apache, on our drive back home. Though travel doesn’t quite look the same right now, I am patiently waiting for the day I can visit these two sites again. The circles in which she moved were dealt a painful blow on Saturday, September 5, when Heung died in a freak accident in the Wind River Range, Wyoming. A sling and webbing anchor broke following rockfall on her descent from Pingora, in the Cirque of the Towers. . “Janette Heung was the real deal; she climbed because she loved being in the mountains,” her climbing partner and friend Beth Goralski told Rock and Ice in an email. “Not only did she excel in climbing, she was a highly accomplished woman with degrees from the most prestigious universities in the country. One of the things I loved about her was her ability to cut through the small talk and get in depth quickly. On long car drives we’d spent hours talking about metaphysics, sociology, culture, existentialism, philosophy and of course, boys. She was funny, warm, and an instant friend.” . On ice, Heung led WI 5 and 6 routes in many of North America’s best cold-weather climbing destinations. Welcome everyone! We are so excited to have you here. Myself (@caitlinelizabethk) and @maddie_phaneuf have been talking for a while about a way to celebrate and uplift our community of women in the Adirondacks. This app brought us together, and now Maddie is one of my favorite women to adventure with here in these mountains. Tonight Maddie, @jollymordan, @thelumberjill8, and I went on a mountain bike ride at Scott’s Cobble in Lake Placid. After the ride we noticed all the cars in the lot belonged to women, something none of us had seen before. We spoke about our community, made new friends, and were all so thankful for the landscape of the Adirondacks and how it shapes us as strong women. It was Char’s idea first, we all brainstormed together, and then decided to start this page that is a celebration of the feminine spirit in these mountains, and inclusive to those who feel that spirit within them. Comments to the Clearwater National Forest supporting re-opening 200,000 acres of the Great Burn to snowmobiling are needed now. This area is the last best snowmobile area in the lower 48 States. This is real! The Forest Service is finally listening to us!
