After 18 months of plotting and six months of exterior work on the #CedarHouseTN, we have commenced painting this bad boy! Answering some FAQs: “Why are you painting and not staining?” We’re painting the eaves tri-corn to seal in the mold trapped beneath the old varnish that can’t be removed, and all the stone foundation and the doors because they are an awful shade of 90’s. The trim and deck, which we finished building last month, will match, too. “Why aren’t you going to leave the wood raw?” Because we live in the South where it is always humid or raining, and the walls have already started to mildew a bit even since we finished our hard-core pressure washing with 4000PSI in July. Not to mention, bug damage, ugh. “So you’re staining it then?” Not exactly. Since shou sugi ban was not an option because we didn’t want to burn down our house, Scott—after a lot of intensive research—came across a natural treatment from @earthandflax used by the Scandinavians to preserve wood. “Why are you opposed to staining/varnishing?” 1) Basic maintenance. This method will not peel, it will not flake and it will not require a re-coat every three years like varnish, which fails every single time. 2) It is based on a naturally occurring pest- and disease-resistant material, which is sap from a pine tree. 3) The color will be the natural state that the wood would weather to if left to nature; this allows us to control the weathering so that it’s uniform. “What sprayer does Scott recommend?” Scott has worked as a commercial painter for more than two decades and this Titan 440i (with regular maintenance and cleaning) has been his go-to for 19 years. When Earl stopped by our farm stand a couple weeks ago, he told us about his dad buying the farm in 1938, with this beautiful barn built in 1937 that had wood siding, no knot holes. You don’t get wood like that anymore, and barns like these are becoming more rare. Whether it’s disrepair, or sale of land to new construction, it’s humbling to be stewards of this little piece of farming history. Thanks to all of you, the Tavern230 Après Patio is officially under construction! Tim from Nicholas Excavation and Construction broke ground and got the stone base roughed in yesterday. Next up, he’ll tamp and grade before we bring in the concrete trucks and Mike and the crew from @megarlockconstruction will take over to give our patio a beautiful stamped finish! . After laying out the initial footprint yesterday, we decided that it just wasn’t going to cut it. So we decided to kick things up a notch and make it more than 60% larger than we initially planned! This design will give us nearly 1500 sq ft of outdoor dining space. . We still have the rest of this month to continue raising funds to really make this patio something special. Throwback to the small project that started it all. January 2018 I decided to quit my excellent six-figure job and start a business. I had a company truck, company phone, unlimited overtime available, and my post-secondary degree was paid for. I gave it all up to start a new chapter, pursue a chance to make a name for myself and what I thought would be easy money. Does it get easier? Does it get harder? Do you ever feel successful? How do you rate success? Whats the next step? How do you learn without making mistakes? Transitioning from a talented and successful carpenter with structured rules and responsibilities to a small business owner has sure kicked my ass some days. They dont tell you that just because youre good at what you do now, youll be good at everything. Owning a business isnt the same as being a great employee. You need to be self-motivating more than ever before. Budgets arent just guidelines anymore, theyre the difference between profiting from a job to struggling to put food on the table and pay bills. You have to be very specific about the battles you chose to fight and always focus on your goals. Business is hard. Some say life can only hit you what you can handle, and that goes both ways with the good and the bad. The worst times in life is a test, just the same as the good times. What do you do when its tax season and the CRA is coming after you, you have no money in the bank, clients arent paying you, theres no work coming up, and employees are starting to worry? You wish it would all be over with the flip of a switch but life doesnt work like that. What about when youve got money in the bank, bills are paid, employees are happy, work is flowing, clients are paying and everything feels fine? Is this the end? What motives you to keep going? Is it the feeling of success or the fear of failure? What are your thoughts on business? Is it what you expected? What lessons have you learned? What advice would you give new business owners? I was asked to help create a modular lemonade kiosk, it needed to be transportable, meet food safety regulations with sinks for hand washing, and be able to fully lock up at night. This is what we came up with. It took us 4 hours to set up on site at the Merrimack Outlets. They make some pretty good lemonade too. [Unbeauftragte Werbung] Hallo ihr Lieben, vor allem an all die vielen Neuen hier 🤗 Willkommen bei uns Kornis heißt es nun seit einer Woche nicht mehr, denn unser Erdbauer hat endlich die letzten Reste vom ehemaligen Kornfeld abgetragen und verteilt. Tschüß 👋🏻 Erdberg, Unkraut, Raps und Getreide 🌾 Hallo grüner Rasen und Blumen lautet jetzt die Devise! 🌱 🌺🌸🌼 Es sieht zwar alles noch nach trostloser Mondlandschaft 🌖 aus, aber bald werden hier kleine grüne Hälmchen sprießen und unser Garten endlich wie einen Garten aussehen lassen. ☺️ Und im nächsten Frühling begrüßen uns dann die ersten Tulpen, Krokuse und Schachbrettblumen. 🌷🌷 #unsergartensollschönerwerden . Letzte Woche ist uns auch bewusst geworden, dass wir unser gesamtes Grundstück bis zur hinteren Grenze zum letzten Mal im Oktober 2018 gesehen haben. 😳 Danach begann der Straßenbau mit Erschließung und es lag immer ein Erdhaufen ⛰auf unserem Grundstück. Während der Bauzeit ist natürlich noch mehr Aushub mit der Errichtung der Garage, Terrasse und der Zisterne dazu gekommen. ⛰⛰⛰ Es gab ja wilde Spekulationen bei Familie, Freunden und Nachbarn, ob denn die Erde ausreicht, zuwenig oder doch zuviel ist. Das Ergebnis mit ein paar Raffinessen 😉lautet: alles bis auf den letzten Krümel perfekt verteilt. Wie die aussehen, zeige ich euch noch. Jetzt muss ich die kurze Schlafzeit 😴der Babymaus aber mal nutzen, um endlich mal ein paar Fragen von euch zu beantworten. 🙈 Ich treulose Tomate 🍅 versuche zukünftig wieder schneller damit zu sein. ☺️ Und mit meinem Beitrag für den #gartenblickdienstag bin ich mal wieder einen Tag zu spät. 😂🤦🏽♀️ . We have taken care of the water management in a creative (and bomb-proof) manner and, next in line of importance, comes ensuring that all the components work together proportionately and the design is balanced.
