One of Manhattan’s true architectural masterpieces, the McGraw-Hill building is one of Midtown’s most unique skyscrapers. Designed by Raymond Hood, one of New York City’s greatest architects and designer of Rockefeller Center, the building was completed in 1931, merging two styles: late 1920s Art-Deco with the more modern International Style. When completed, McGraw Hill at 330 West 42nd Street was so different from other skyscrapers that some even described it as an ugly “green elephant.” Indeed, the facade is entirely cladded in green tiles that veer to a more bluish hue as they ascend to the sky. The building rises to the 35th floor in a sequence of massive setbacks that not only confer grace to its vertical development but also have a purpose: wider floor plans at the bottom to host printing machinery and large working spaces, narrower on top for executives offices. Windows develop horizontally instead of vertically, a sign of the modernism wave landing in NYC. On top of it all, the massive McGraw-Hill sign, an art deco masterpiece in it of itself, embedded in a machine-like crown so iconic that many years later, it was referenced in a close-by residential tower. The lobby, usually close to the public, its a triumph of black and green marbles ornate with golden finishes. Originally built to host the headquarters of McGraw-Hill publishing company, the building was also the birthplace of Timely Comics in 1939, now known as Marvel Comics, before moving to another iconic New York City skyscraper, the Empire State Building, in 1942. The top floors were recently converted into rental units. A two-bedroom on the 35th floor goes for more than $6k a month. Living in architectural history comes at a cost. La exposición titulada Poured Architecture: Sergio Prego on Miguel Fisac estará desde el 11 de febrero al 11 de abril de 2020. Chicago (January 30, 2020)—The exhibition Poured Architecture establishes a dialogue between the late Spanish architect Miguel Fisac and the contemporary work of the Basque-born, Brooklyn-based artist Sergio Prego. Through a new body of work supported by a Graham Foundation Fellowship, Prego explores the possibility and synchronicity of materials and processes across architecture and visual art in a new series of sculptures and drawings inspired by Fisac’s innovative architecture and construction techniques. Here, Prego plays with scale and texture and creates his pneumatic and concrete structures within the context of Fisac’s methodology—chiefly arquitectura vertida, the patented cast concrete system that Fisac created, known in English as poured architecture. Drawings by Prego, displayed alongside facsimiles of material culled from Fisac’s archive, further illustrate the confluence of the two practices that both employ themes of material fluidity and malleability and investigate using materials such as plastic, concrete, and aluminum. This exhibition invites a multifaceted conversation about architectural imagination, experimentation, and material expression. Poured Architecture: Sergio Prego on Miguel Fisac is curated by Carlos Copertone, Patxi Eguíluz, and Iker Gil. It seems timely to revisit the @salkinstitute in a period where the world is in a race to develop medicine to save humanity from a fatal disease. The Architecture is highly regarded but it’s place in history is thanks to a noble patron’s medical discoveries. The man is Jonas Salk and the place is La Jolla, California. In the 1950’s people were terrified by Polio. At the time it was the worst epidemic to hit Americans leaving some 25,000 people either dead or with disabling paralysis. Apart from the atomic bomb, Americas greatest fear was polio. Ask your parents or grandparents how the terror of polio parallels what we fear today with Coronavirus. 7 years of trials and 20,000 working physicians later in April 1955, the Polio vaccine was introduced. It almost became a national holiday. Jonas Salk was hailed as a miracle worker. The city of San Diego gifted him a site and in 1960, he founded the Salk Institute and hired Louis Kahn to head the design. Today, walking about the campus is serene. It’s surprisingly in great shape. Concrete holds up! In the central courtyard, a sunken channel of water bisects the two symmetrical towers, leading your gaze towards the infinity of the ocean. Facing West was a grace given to researchers who would spend their years conducting research inside the facilities. Modular to its outward appearance the lines are quite strong, angular, and sharp against the landscape. The building is able to “guess tomorrow” Salk said, because of thoughtful flexibility designed by Kahn: Lack of interior walls to optimize adaptation to research needs and alternating floors for infrastructure and research to prevent disruptions. It is bright and it is airy despite the appearance of heaviness the materials allude. It is inside these types of labs where the future of medicine lives. An old flame! It’s been nearly a decade since we completed RDKM - Raif Dinçkök Cultural Center. Location: Yalova, Turkey Client: Akkök Holding Built area: 5.700 sqm. Perforated weather-resistant steel with a rusty surface was chosen for exterior surfaces, in a kind of homage to industry and to the resilient forces of nature. Air and light penetrate this steel skin. A multi-purpose room with a capacity of 600 persons, a workshop for up to 150 people, wedding and exhibition rooms and an office and cafeteria are part of the scheme within specific volumes that are disconnected from the building façade. These functional volumes are connected to each other by a ramp that forms a sheltered inner street. Recreational and service areas are situated between the functional volumes. . RAYhouse, a Friendly Fortress under construction STRATEGY: The design provides sustainable architectural solutions for the harsh climate of Riyadh. Although the building is completely closed to the outside, the design creates a cautious dialogue with the exterior garden, defined by the ARTICULATION of the building volumes. . CHALLENGE: How can we create comfortable indoor environments in the desert? The house can be completely shut off and tentatively resumed. Facades that give directly to the street are generally blind with minimum openings with an integrated system of shutters that allows for ventilation while the house stays totally impervious to the outside. Conversely, a fully glazed north facing garden front allows for maximum exploitation of daylight and the garden view. . SUSTAINABILITY CONCEPT: The aim of the design is to provide sustainable architectural solutions in the harsh climate of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Health and indoor air quality are optimized wherever possible by integrating the use of low-VOC paints, no formaldehyde adhesives, and locally sourced materials. The hybrid design approach combines both passive and active measures implemented to reach an optimized situation for a comfortable indoor environment. . MATERIALS: Fair-faced concrete eliminates the need for paint and maintenance. It so also apparent in its structural form on the inside of the house. Mineral wool insulation, a wool-like material made by blowing steam or air through molten rock, will be installed where needed for enhanced heat and sound insulation. The walls are 50cm thick and help us reduce the Air Conditioning consumption by 50% ! The suspended pool further provides coolness to the spaces below, and is treated without the use of chlorine. . Πριν από την ελληνική επανάσταση, στις αρχές του 19ου αιώνα, οι Αμπελόκηποι ήταν χωριό λίγα χιλιόμετρα βορειοανατολικά της Αθήνας. Η πληθυσμιακή έκρηξη στους Αμπελοκήπους συνέβη μετά τη Μικρασιατική Καταστροφή, το 1922, όταν εγκαταστάθηκαν πολλοί πρόσφυγες σε αυτήν την περιοχή. Για την εγκατάσταση των προσφύγων, η κυβέρνηση είχε επιλέξει αρχικά την περιοχή του σταδίου του Παναθηναϊκού. Η σύγχρονη συνοικία διατηρεί τον λαϊκό χαρακτήρα της και είναι ιδιαίτερα πυκνοκατοικημένη. Χαρακτηριστικός είναι επίσης και ο πολυπολιτισμικός χαρακτήρας της, καθώς στη περιοχή κατοικεί μεγάλος αριθμός μεταναστών από τη Νότια - Νοτιοανατολική Ασία καθώς και από άλλα μέρη. The Equestrian Centre has a rich history linked to the region of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro and to its people’s passion for horses and equestrian sports. It is also the history of one of Europe’s best show jumping fields and its relation with Pedras Salgadas Park at the peak of spa tourism. It is also a history of decline. The Equestrian Centre’s deterioration was gradual but worsened from the 1990s onwards until it seemed irreversible. Recuperation works began in 2013. Times changed and with them users’ needs. As the modernisation of show business democratised access to events spectators were no longer members of a tiny privileged class. New, international rules for competitions led to an in-depth reformulation. The need to make the Equestrian Centre profitable forced a rethinking of the income-generating model, based on the very short season of jumping competitions. 32 boxes and a riding ring were built. The new and the existing building endeavour to dialogue between them and the nature around them. The boxes, for instance, are covered in cork panels. Not only is it a native material, but as it grows old cork acquires textures and hues that are similar to the surrounding trees, becoming organically diluted in the landscape. The most iconic example of this invisible architecture is the riding ring. Covered in tree trunks, it appears to have been adopted and embraced by the encompassing vegetation. The trunks, and time, will ensure that it is completely taken over and appropriated by the flora. Construction of the Brasília Museum. From Imagem e Memória Candanga / @arpdf Built between August 1959 and April 1960, the museum features a bold concrete structure that contrasts with the simplicity of its program. Two beams, 5 metres tall and 35 long, define a single, zenitaly lit exhibition room on top of two supporting walls. These, in turn, enclose a single staff toilet and a deposit, on either side of the access staircase. Most likely during a renovation in 1986, the skylight, an essential feature of the architecture, was closed probably in plaster - such inappropriate solution should be eventually remedied. Architectural Inspiration of the Day courtesy of HYA designer Samantha Senn: The National Library of Argentina, or Biblioteca Nacional, was designed Clorindo Testa in 1961. One of the leaders of the Argentine rationalist movement, Testa was a pioneer of brutalism in the country. He was influenced by the effects of color, tension, metaphors, and adaptability; these can all be seen in the design of the Biblioteca Nacional, which sits atop a hill with massing that mimics the forms of the trees surrounding it. Having both lived and studied in the area, Samantha comments, Concrete is widely used in construction in the region, and we saw many creative uses, but this building left a unique impression on me. Something about the contrast of concrete being a heavy material, and housing books overhead, made the entry sequence feel very dramatic. Se em março eu soubesse que até hoje (agosto) o @velhomercadonovo estaria fechado ao público eu talvez tivesse jogado a toalha. Lá, 5 meses atrás, as coisas já não estavam fáceis (elas nunca estão), imagina com uma notícia dessas! Mas o engraçado é como o futuro nunca chega de repente, ele vai chegando e, ao invés da gente se assustar, a gente vai absorvendo, aprendendo e se adaptando - e isso muda tudo. Hoje fui ao Mercado Novo para resolver algumas coisas da @cervejariaviela e de passagem por ali, aproveitei para ir na @graficaeloprint imprimir uns arquivos para o @cafejetiboca , de lá, passei no @flaviofurtunato para ver como andava uma máquina que ele está consertando e claro, bati um papo. Encontrei o @luismatuto também na função resolvendo um trabalho. Vi o @charlesbronsonvinil contando uns casos para o @gvbezin pertinho da @marcenariacentralbh aonde o @andersom.silva.73 e o @henriquemilhoes estavam finalizando a cama da Dora encomendada por mim e pela @mairasette . Saindo de lá vi o @bbbbbbbbbbbbbernardo fazendo um corte moderníssimo na @barbeariaolegario e, naturalmente, fiz piada disso com os amigos que estavam começando o expediente na @cozinhatupis. Cansei, dei tchau para o @luizpontoluiz e fui para casa. No caminho, fiquei pensando como achei intensa essa passagem pelo Mercado e, como mesmo com todo distanciamento e máscaras, esse dia me deu um sentimento bom, uma esquentadinha no coração... Cheguei em casa, relaxei e fiquei pensando como o fato de eu ter me acostumado com a quarentena me fez criar uma visão recortada do que era minha realidade até a pouquíssimo tempo, e deixou tão nítida a beleza daquilo tudo. Nada disso diminui as dificuldades ou a seriedade do momento que estamos vivendo, mas certamente aumenta o ânimo para atravessar e ver aquele lugar que eu tanto amo voltar a pulsar. ♥️ #voltamercadonovo - @rafaelquick on Instagram
