This was 12 years ago in Thailand on my second silent vipassana retreat, where one sits and walks in silence for 8 hours a day. Since then, meditation has been my basecamp from which I have traversed the pains of anxiety, addictions and mental health, allowing me to eventually assimilate their lessons into an ordinary, embodied wellbeing. The shots are of me, and two early dhamma teachers. The monk is an old English expat, Tan Dhammavidu, who for 20 years has been instructing in Ajhan Buddhadassa’s method of mindfulness-of-breathing. This approach begins with a manipulation of the breath to come into a direct physical and mental relationship with this vital force. A practice originating before breathwork and mindfulness were commonplace or synonymous in the West. My duties on retreat were cleaning the bathrooms where over time I witnessed a proud forest toad standing guard as it’s spawn turned from tadpoles to tiny amphibians, before it then peacefully died. A turning of the wheel that touched my mind deeply, which was by that point clear, open and attentive. This isn’t the state I arrived in though. The first thing I was mindfulness of was my general lack of mindfulness, amid the noisy, racing of my thoughts, complaints and opinions! Then gradually my deepest, simple yet most profound and abiding insight began to arise, as my mind finally gave up trying to comprehend and control my experience of life, and the body’s natural wisdom and understanding sprang forth into my awareness, guided by power of the breath. Every time I sat on the meditation cushion thereafter has been an ongoing practice of learning to surrender to all that is right there already; primary, alive, and real. Mindfulness is not something that we do, but rather is accessed when we hold our bodies, hearts and minds in alignment. If we can trust in the body’s wisdom we can open to the ceaseless flow of sensation, emotions and thoughts, yet still be engaged, relaxed and attentive as it all unfolds. This can release the body and mind from conflict and tension allowing for their harmonious union, supported by the loving awareness within the heart. - @matwakeham on Instagram
