Extraordinary Ordinary Pit village life by Jack Hulme Jack Hulme’s photographs of the pit village of Fryston, on the outskirts of Castleford, are a fascinating, unique and revealing record of a mining community in the mid twentieth century. He was born in the village but, after an injury, was unable to work as a miner. When his wife bought him a Leica camera he became the village photographer, and it is for his black and white images that he is now remembered. The enduring charm of his photgraphs is in the capture of the ordinary – domestic chores, playing in the street, the daily grind. From the attitude of his subjects towards him, you can see he was part of the life he was documenting. #MTV said they were narrowcasting in 1983, meaning targeting a certain audience but thats not really what they were doing. They were narrow in selecting the artists and comfortably discriminating. It still happens today in 2020, only a different kind. BET was once accused of calling hip-hop group Little Brother too intelligent for their audience. A lot of labels and bigger media outlets often dont care about the depth of the music, just the numbers so theyll follow trends and formulas. This is understandable to a degree, theyre businesses, but its the innovative businesses that see long term success. #DavidBowie knew how to stay innovative. With Ray Romano and Patty Heaton on the set of a taping of “Everybody Loves Raymond,” as Phil Rosenthal gives animated instruction, preparing to shoot a scene. The amazing thing was always watching the evolution from the page to the stage. The cast, especially Ray, had a tremendous ability to think on their feet, and along with the writers, always seemed to have the ability to make a brilliant scene even funnier. A scene would be shot the way it was written, but Ray would sometimes do alternate takes with slight changes to the script. Sometimes he told the writers, sometimes he didn’t. They we’re always funny, and it would simply become an embarrassment of riches to choose for editing. I can’t explain in words just how in awe I was of those abilities. I was in the presence of greatness, skill, hard work, and incredible humility. Fantastic indeed. The photo was taken by Tom Caltabiano. Not only is he a wonderful photographer, but Ray’s closest friend on set.
