I can still remember it like it happened yesterday... 3 Bucks chasing a doe coming from our left to right, Dad saying “get ready.... wait for them to stop.... the one in the back, get on him”......... “ Bust him!” .. Boom... Then the excitement set in as we watched him fall, high fives, hugs, laughter... At 11 years old, I had just killed my 6th deer, but my biggest buck. To me, then, that’s what it was all about. To him, then, it was about way more. This is Lorne Figley, a Veteran of the Second World War. He served in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany as part of a unit that helped spot and destroy enemy artillery and bunkers. Upon releasing from the military in 1946, he started a career as a contractor. The ACMG currently has 16 female IFMGA Mountain Guides. Who are they? - Lisa Paulson - After completing high school in Calgary, I moved to Lake Louise to follow my passion for skiing. During that time, I held many jobs at the resort, but ski patrol with the medical aspects of helping people, and avalanche forecasting and control work became my focus. I discovered another passion - climbing - and met my first mentors working towards their ACMG certification. The rigours of these activities, however, led to the first (of five) knee surgeries, and I then decided to seek a career that was a bit less physically demanding. Inspired by the National Park Wardens and their knowledge of snow safety at the ski hill and diversity of work, I knew I had found the right career path. After studying Resource Conservation at Lethbridge College and the University of Montana, I embarked on a fantastic career with Parks Canada as a Park Warden and later as a Visitor Safety Specialist. The job was diverse. I worked in almost every section spanning fire and vegetation, environmental assessment, wildlife, law enforcement, long back-country horse patrols, rescue and snow safety work. The only time I bumped into issues with being female was when I was applying for a position but because they already had a female at that location. But that was short lived and I moved there soon after. My zeal for climbing and ski mountaineering with great friends and colleagues grew, despite experiencing a tragic personal ice-climbing accident where I lost my partner. The Park Warden job was a seasonal summer position. I sought the ski guide certification as a means to winter employment and had fleeting ambitions of becoming a mountain guide. I went on to hold other positions with Parks Canada in Jasper, Glacier & Mt. Revelstoke, Waterton Lakes National Parks. In 2005, I moved back to Lake Louise to work as a Visitor Safety Specialist. In my late thirties/early forties, with the tremendous support of my husband, family, friends and colleagues, I squeezed in another minor knee surgery and had two beautiful children all while finishing my last two summer ACMG exams. - At the end of the summer of 2017, 3 hunters found a 1,200-year-old Viking sword in remarkably good condition lying in between the rocks. It seems the sword was just lying there for a thousand years. It was dated to 85 to 950 A.D. and researchers say it was most likely carried by a Viking warrior.

A very special #SFSARspotlight - Carla H. Carla has been with South Fraser SAR for 21 years. She plays many roles on this team including Ground and Inland Waters Team Leader, Swiftwater Rescue Technician, Organized Avalanche Team Member, Boat Team Member and Captain, Hover Entry and Exit, Emergency First Aid First Responder, among others. - Why did you join SAR: To expand my volunteer pursuits and develop my skillset in a plethora of areas, that were transferrable to my outdoor pursuits, my career and my community. - How has SAR impacted your life: My dedication to SAR has given me opportunities to help families in need with a host of professional skills, it has connected me to a network of simply outstanding peers, opportunities to mentor exceptional young people, and given me balance. I have been so lucky in this life, SAR gives me great opportunities to give back to those who need support. - What do you do outside of SAR: I love mountaineering with my dog, kayaking, riding motorcycles, ATVing, fishing, travelling, home renos, entertaining friends and family, and adventuring with my outgoing boyfriend and his curious and fun loving little boy. - What’s the best advice you were ever given?: “Life isn’t fair, especially as a girl/woman, you just have to grab on tight to opportunities as they open up. When one door closes, five others open”, My Dad. “And sometimes you just have to hurry up, pull up your big girl panties and get on with it. Move forward”, My Mom. - What is something you’re very good at?: Connecting with people and working hard. - What’s something you’ve done lately that was worth remembering?: Spent some long days in challenging conditions with a great team, doing our absolute best, to find someone’s loved one. - Any final words: SAR isn’t for everyone, but for those who are fit, have skills that they want to continue to develop, a good relationship with life and death, and want to give back to their community there are few better volunteer organizations. It should definitely be considered as a way to grow as a person and I encourage more people to learn more about it. - @southfrasersar on Instagram
- This is one of the last pictures of Abbigail Cowbrough. She was part of the NATO exercise helicopter team that dispatched from the HMCS Fredicton that crashed yesterday. Unsure of how many lives are missing and/or lost, but she was the first found and confirmed. RIP and thank you for your service.
