It is with a heavy heart we share that last week, we received the news that long-time EHS volunteer Sean Beech sadly passed away on April 18, 2020. Sean was a regular–nearly daily–volunteer at EHS. He was with us for over 15 years and helped in every area of the shelter. In fact, his involvement with EHS goes so far back that we don’t even have a record of all his volunteer hours anymore, but it’s safe to say that he donated at least an average of 500 hours each year. Sean was willing to help in any way he could and jumped at every new opportunity. His contribution was truly astounding. Always smiling, Sean brought positivity everywhere he went – along with his giant Tim Hortons coffee mug in hand. He had a profound and touching impact on every person and animal he met, and his dedication and commitment to EHS was unparalleled. This is a heartbreaking loss for EHS and our greater community, and he will be sincerely missed by all of us. Our hearts go out to his family during this extremely difficult time. Thank you, Sean. Our Early Years students have been well engaged in the #VirtualSchoolExperience. The children in Foundation 1 – Badger class had tremendous fun on learning how to make a shaker. So much learning for this age group came from using a variety of materials to make different sounds and the vocabulary connected to this activity such as loud and soft. Over the years there’s been some lovely highs and some heartbreaking low moments at school for Jude. This picture is definitely up there with one of the best! For much of his school life so far, Jude has really struggled being around other kids (also shown at home by just not being able to cope around Tommy) and there would be meltdowns day after day. Their noise, their unpredictability. Being too close to them simply made him too anxious, and wouldn’t end well. In short, he just wanted to be alone. Most of his school day he’d spend at his own workstation, unwilling, and scared of mixing with his classmates. In the few moments that he did, he’d have to then have a break away from them, to help him keep it all together. Over time, things have improved for Jude (at home and at school) and he’s much less anxious than before. More recently he’s been able to spend larger parts of his day like this, happily working alongside his classmates. Rather than being scared of the other children, he’s becoming intrigued by them (if they’re not too loud 😊) Watching what they’re doing, smiling and enjoying seeing what they’re up to. Slowly, theres been more interactions, with Jude sometimes realising that he can join in with them too. With that progress, school has become a much happier place. With Jude’s reduction in anxiety, and being in a more settled state, it’s meant he can participate more and more each day. For most of the world all they’d see in this picture a 12 year old boy smiling at a toddler’s toy. Maybe they’d wonder how it could possibly be making him so happy. For those of us who ‘get’ what this picture really shows, we know just how special moments like these really are ❤️ - @storiesaboutautism on Instagram

This tree was found as an eight foot stump in the 9/11 rubble and was nursed back to health, growing to 30ft tall, sprouting new branches and flowering in the springtime. It now stands just west of the south pool at the 9/11 memorial, a beautiful and poignant testament to resilience and renewal. Ok.. where do I start. The “EEZY PEEZY climber with top” is EPIC! I honestly can’t express how much we all love this. This is a must have for any kid. The climber encourages kids to be active/jump/climb/slide and move as they develop coordination skills. It can hold up to 70g and allows 2 children to climb carefree. It’s lightweight and simple snap construction. I honestly didn’t have any troubles putting it together on my own. I definitely recommend building it where you’ll be using it. I started to build it inside and realised that wasn’t a clever idea 😂 I love that it’s durable, weather & UV resistant and uses high quality plastic tubing.
