𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐝 👶🏼 ⁣ ⁣ It’s #worldbreastfeedingweek , so I amidst all of the fabulous posts from my colleagues, I thought I would share an important topic that affects some breastfeeding journeys significantly & seems to come with lots of miss conceptions. The answer of course is TRUE! ⁣ 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐚 𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐮𝐦’𝐬 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐤?⁣ Yes! Food proteins e.g. cows milk, soya, egg & wheat, are detectable in breast milk(BM) for hours and up to days after consumption. For most 👶🏼 these are tolerated as the content of these allergens in breast milk is much lower than if consuming the food protein directly.⁣ ⁣ Cows milk is the most common allergen, with between 1 in 100-200 babies (0.5-1%) of exclusively breastfed babies estimated to develop IgE-mediated and/or non-IgE mediated allergic symptoms to milk protein (CMPA), which is a much lower incidence than babies who are formula fed. Other allergenic food proteins including egg, soya & wheat can also be transferred through BM⁣, and are traceable in significant amounts to lead to allergic reactions. ⁣ It is important to remember that exposure to these proteins via BM is considered important to the process of developing tolerance in infants - meaning if an infant can tolerate maternal inclusion of food proteins e.g. milk/egg/soya/wheat they should not be cut out unnecessarily. ⁣ ⁣ For example, in cases where babies react to a food protein during weaning e.g. Cow’s milk in food, whilst they may need to eliminate it from their diet there is no need for mum to remove milk from her diet if baby has tolerated via BM thus far.⁣ The cornerstone of diagnosis for delayed type (nonIgE mediated) allergy, is maternal exclusion of suspected allergen for 2-4 weeks followed by reintroduction - monitoring for resolution & subsequent relapse of symptoms respectively. This should be guided by a qualified HCP with knowledge of food allergy & how to support mums nutritional needs. ⁣ 🌟 Watch this space for an exciting announcement later this week- specifically for mums with Breastfed babies who have suspected or diagnosed CMPA 🌟 #breastfeeding - @childrensdietitian on Instagram

I didn’t know it was possible to hold your breath for nine months, now I’m realizing in so many ways I did through Ozzie’s pregnancy. I would say to myself “I will get excited after a darker line, after bloodwork, after seeing the heartbeat or once we make it to 12 weeks.” I cried in Jason’s arms one night for living the first part of my pregnancy guarded, in deep fear of my heart being shattered again. Thankfully with leaning into the Lord, trusting his plan and recalling His past faithfulness, I was able to celebrate my growing belly, the baby kicks and I started to bond with my daughter and dream about her sweet face. Then the Gestational Diabetes diagnosis sent me right back into a state of fear. I spent the last 10 weeks of my pregnancy listening to care providers list off every possible risk, complication and possibility for babies born to mothers with GD. At times it felt impossible to not get swallowed up in it all. Now here in all the rawness of postpartum, it hits me! All the walls crumble, the tears of relief uncontrollably roll down my cheeks onto her head and I breath again! I breath in the sweet goodness of her fresh baby smell and I soak up every ounce of her being. She’s here, really here, safe and whole! Its #pcosawarenessmonth Its time to educate. Many patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) are given their diagnosis and told they may never be able to have children. This isnt true for everyone. The main issue that women may face with PCOS is lack of ovulation or irregular ovulation. There are various treatments that patients can seek out in order to have a baby of their own. Sometimes it involves taking medication. Other times it may involve more invasive measures such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF). It may also benefit to be under the care of a Reproductive Endocrinologist. In addition, just because you have PCOS, it doesnt mean you cant get pregnant naturally on your own. Every patient experiences PCOS differently. Explore the options that work for you. =============== My experience: we needed help to get pregnant with my first two children. It took years of trying on our own, then with fertility treatments. It was emotionally difficult at times. The medications can be taxing. The procedures can be invasive. The process can be stressful. Theres a lot of bloodwork involved (for which my veins may never forgive me), internal sonograms, failed ovulation tests, and failed pregnancy tests.... but THEN theres the ONE POSITIVE test that changes your entire world that makes the entire process worth it. We needed a fertility expert to help us with our first two pregnancies. Our third - well, thats where PCOS threw us for a loop. I managed to get my PCOS under control for one year through diet and exercise and that resulted in our third pregnancy. This is my reality. Having a preemie ; bottles are kinda the way to go at first. In the NICU we chose bottles so we’d know River was getting a specific amount of milk & to get the eff out of there (which a lot of moms choose). This meant majority of our days were spent pumping. Like every 2-3 hours. Trying to do more breast feeding, but still pumping. To be honest I cannot wait for the day I can throw my pump in the trash if it’s because River is just breast feeding, has moved onto solid foods or I’ve switched to formula. I can say I won’t miss it. Once you finish pumping then cleaning and sterilizing you have to pump again. All my Exclusively Pumping moms know the this life.
