Because our school was dropped right in the middle of the Sonoran Desert, the University of Arizona has always had to get creative with the use and collection of water resources. 💦 Old Main, arguably one of UAs most iconic locales, has some of the most pristine landscaping on campus. This type of landscaping is often referred to as Xeriscaping, which means that the plants are drought tolerant and little water is needed to maintain the landscape. However, the landscape design around Old Main is not just drought resistant, its a Water Harvesting Basin! 🌊 The Department of Soil, Water, and Environmental Science collaborated with this unique landscape and was able to install water harvesting basins that collect the rainwater that would have just been sitting there to evaporate! ☔️ In terms of environmental health, water is one of Arizonas biggest issues. Joseph Mueller built this house on Madison Pike; his brother Phillip lived across the street. Born and bred in Latonia, they grew up to found the Latonia Ice and Fuel Company. Joe and Phils father arrived in Covington from Germany in 1857. Joe and his wife Elizabeth Wiehoff had eight children; Phil and his wife Mary Ann had nine. Their business began with the ice. In the old days, ice was harvested from frozen lakes in the winter and sold during the spring and summer. The Muellers built their own lake to supply their ice business, fed by nearby Banklick Creek. In some places, the lake was 60 feet deep. It was located where the @tankbus garage is today (next to this house). By 1910, Latonia Ice and Fuel was operating out of a warehouse located on Eugenia Ave in Latonia. At this point, they had started manufacturing ice for sale. They used sawdust to insulate the walls. Joe died in 1938. He was still selling coal and ice out of Latonia with his brother, who died in 1954. Before the TANK location was built, Muellers estate included a building that later served as Lakeside Inn, and then Rio Ritas Restaurant, which I heard described as a nightclub. From the late 1980s until 2016, the house was owned by a local legal family. When they listed the house, it sat unsold for two years. (To be fair, the house is amazing; the location, not so much, anymore.) OReilly Automotive bought the house in 2016, with the intention of razing it and its matching garage to build a much less attractive auto parts store. The mystery? The house still stands, and now theres an AutoZone across the street. In 2010, the City declared this 1911 home in Willmore City a public nuisance. It was boarded up yet inhabited by squatters; it had no kitchen, heating, or plumbing. Two years later, it was slated for demolition. Chuck Nourrcier rescued the house and brought it back to life using only local vendors, contractors, and laborers. They completely rehabbed the home, restoring the remaining original elements. They even installed a new foundation while leaving the original one intact. Now a local landmark and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, this home proves that if a building remains standing, it’s never beyond saving. The Torrey House and the other six honorees for the Long Beach Heritage Preservation Awards reflect the many ways people work every day to keep our city’s unique heritage alive. The original main bedroom @oestehome was a narrow, dark space, with the bed facing away from the view. When I walked the property and checked my compass - I discovered that the sun sets between two mountains perfectly framed by the bedroom. Sunset became the inspiration for the room. Warm, golden hour tones make it a sunny, happy space. I had seen round windows before, but fell in love with the window at the @wineandrockshop, and that became the centerpiece of the room. But, why have a window when it could be a reading nook? I love beds - honestly, I would just stay in one all day if I could. Work, eat - I just want to be in pajamas under a duvet. So for vacation properties like Oeste and the @kitchycabin, I obsess over the beds (and actually sleep in each one before guests arrive to make sure they’re all comfortable). Prioritizing my goals before last year was something I really needed to focus on. Before, I wanted to go on long vacays and splurge on myself with my closest friends. I wanted a new car badlyyy, I kept a list of cars on the market constantly. But I knew I had to play it smart with my coins and bank on getting a house first. It’s been a year since I purchased a home and I am beyond elated! A year ago me and my brother decided we needed to make a big move and make some real investments💡We knew we wanted to purchase real estate and when the opportunity came to find the property we had so many options. We really could have purchased any property we wanted in the market it was crazyyy, but we knew we needed to be smart and plan for future investments also. With our knowledge of the market we made a decision based on the vision we have for the property. Not the state it’s in but what it could turn into. We love how this home turned out with all of the angled and rounded walls on the entire home. My surveyor had to come out a few times on this one during the concrete forming stage just to make sure it was perfectly laid out. Homes like this with all of the different angled walls can can be very challenging to do from start to finish. But We love building homes like this, you have to pay attention to every detail and really put a lot of for-thought into every aspect during the concrete and framing stages or the rest of the job will not turn out correctly. Just when you think you kinda, maybe, sorta know what you’re doing as a homeschooler—2020 hits and all bets are off. . The start of this school year has definitely been one the toughest we’ve ever had (and this is my 9th homeschool year). But Covid isolation, the reality and weight of the #blmmovement, hormones (uh theirs, not mine), a curriculum change, and a shift in workload has put us all on edge. . So today, as some kids shed tears, I gave lots of hugs and back rubs. I offered grace. I told them I understand because I do. We are all feeling it, in one way or another. . And we finished the day with a handicraft—beading. As hands worked and threaded beads it was a welcome distraction that relaxed everyone. Disaster volunteers provided emergency assistance for 10 displaced families (38 people) , ensuring essentials such as temporary lodging, food, clothing, personal items and health and emotional support. We have always been proponents of classroom learning, but when our school district announced that it was going to continue distance learning in the fall we decided it was time to homeschool. We learned pretty quickly last spring that staring at a screen for hours on end was not a good way for our children to be educated. I’m so thankful for my wife taking up the mantle and figuring out how to implement this whole program, and I love seeing all four of my kids, ranging in age from 6 to 13, sitting together to listen to a story to start out the day. I love seeing my girls read 😍 Reading is one of the greatest gifts and fiercest weapons we are given in life. My two oldest are readers now, and I’m teaching my third. She read “See me eat” last week and was so excited. We haven’t had any really difficult reading struggles, such as dyslexia... we also haven’t had any “they taught themselves how to read at 4.” My girls have all worked hard for this skill. With this hard earned skill, they can enter into other time periods, other worlds, other cultures, other experiences, new ideas, and deeper minds.
