As great as it is to see the European stone fruit and melon season get into full swing, nothing quite beats seeing our abundant UK crops coming through the warehouse. And this week was a special one. ROSH HASHANA 5781 The days leading up to holidays have become very loaded for me. I am in constant pull- push battle with my emotions. My feelings of joy, excitement and anticipation over the upcoming holiday are so tremendous that I feel myself being pulled speedily towards the approaching days. At the same time I’m filled with dread and sadness. I’m fully aware that yet another holiday is approaching with out the arrival of Mashiach. I’m overflowing with sadness that I will once again have to cook for not enough people. My table will be a physical reminder of how incomplete my own world is with out one of my children sitting there. My emotions are so conflicting and so big that I have found ways to function with all them. The days are for happiness and anticipation. I spend those hours cooking, talking my children in this world, listening to shiurim and making my house ready. The nights, are for him. For sadness and tear filled tefillos. Of course, life is never that black and white and moments of each creep there way into my designated times. It is those moments when the weight of what I live with feels like it may crush my comparatively small shoulders. It is in those times I ask Hashem “where is Mashiach? Why are we still suffering after all these years? Look at klal Yisroel, we NEED you. Please please save us”. Through the mercy of Hashem it is in those times I feel Him most. When the weight becomes to much to bear He is there to carry it with me. It’s not through answers, because I don’t have those answers. It’s through all the other goodness Hashem has bestowed upon me that I feel Him helping me through my troubles. I feel His presence and the moment passes. The feeling I’m left with though, a feeling of love and support never leaves. Sitting at my kitchen table, separating my herb leaves all I could think about were the upcoming tefillos we say in rosh hashanna whose words are so tremendous i have a hard time getting out of my mouth. To know that our future is being written as we daven, whose year will be filled with what, who will make it through the year and who won’t, is terrifying. Sandy soil, iron well water, high winds, extremely hot and dry weather, gophers, rabbits, squirrels, birds, mice, pack rats, dogs digging, part time first time #farming at this scale, infant in care, teaching college, unstable market due to stated virus, 5 goats, 40 chickens, puppy dogs, faulty tractor, wasps, very low budget, riots and masks ... as well as deep commitment to do it like nature does, chemicals free, on farm fertility, protecting and enhancing the native ecosystem, joy hope and love in our hearts for working with mother earth, help from friends and community members, excitment to see nature expressing its unforseen evolution as a response to our stewardship, cool evenings, star filled night skies, quiet mornings, magestic owls and hawks, happy chickens and goats, excited neighbors, full bellies, cold outdoor showers with views, grandiose sunrises and sunsets, happy bees, home cooked meals, acknowledgments from true supporters, learning about life and living, freedom, independence, experiencing the divine, family, love ♥️ . We did it, not all of it perfect or according to plans (life throws curveballs so we can learn how to thrive and become resilient). We did not flinch once, we kept going, courageously and confidently, asking for help when we needed and being detached from dissapointments. All with love, and still being able to inspire, empower and support others build themselves. Covid showed us just how important it was to move forward with a concept based around not just sustainable fish, but a sustainable business concept that includes eliminating waste and growing as much of our own product as possible. It’s a young garden but she is a real beaut and pumping out more herbs and veggies than we could have hoped for. Buena mulata pepper - what a stunner!! This is an heirloom variety that traces back to Horace Pippin, the folk artist, who shared seeds of it with William Woys Weavers grandfather (who’s grandson then grew it out and shared with many more!) in the 1940s. Not loving the early frost, but damn fall colours make me happy. Harvested these beauty carrots for yesterday’s CSA pick up. The cold nights have made the curly roja kale turn such a stunning deep plum and lavender. Despite the frosty field on Tuesday morning, we ended up putting together quite a nice bin that still celebrated some of the very last summer goodies. @escapeddomestics offered our flower share folks these gorgeous autumn bouquets. I’m seriously in love with these sunflowers. I will sincerely miss all the beautiful fruit we have been getting from @fruitionguelph over the season. Autumn planting! Managed to plant up 25 herbaceous perennials this afternoon before the school run, phew! Usually I’m faffing with displays & moving pots around & changing my mind. But I was happy first time today! I’ll sleep well tonight. Not bad considering I had forgotten to order & emailed the wholesaler late last night. This morning they were all picked out & ready for me to collect, now that’s service for you. If you are local on the Sussex/Surrey border then try #Prenplants. They have the most amazing selection of healthy Perennials grown in peat free compost. Luckily they are 5 min drive & on my way to my biggest garden. They also sell the compost #melcourtsylvagrow which is the only RHS endorsed multi purpose compost & gives lovely results. Plus in my opinion the best organic compost your money can buy! Salad brassica, flea beetle and Enviromesh. Salad brassicas like mizuna, mustard, rocket and landcress add a punchy kick to mixed salads and we always try to include some of these flavourful leaves in our mix. These salad brassicas are known as long-day plants; with under twelve hours of uninterrupted darkness they will initiate reproductive growth and will attempt to flower. This is undesirable as we’re aiming to harvest the leafy vegetative growth of these crops. As hours of daylight increasingly surpass hours of darkness, we dedicate less time and space to growing these leaves. Another major challenge to growing these salad brassicas in late spring and summer is the prevalence of brassica loving flea beetle during this time of year. There are several species of flea beetle that feed on the leaves of brassica crops and we are not sure which flea beetle we have. All have similar life cycles. In autumn adult flea beetle hibernate in hedgerows, under trees, and in other sheltered positions. When temperatures rise in the spring the beetles come of out hibernation and soon begin to feed. The beetles mate and lay eggs towards the end of May. The larvae hatch, may feed on plant roots and form pupae after about 4 weeks. The pupal stage lasts for about 4 weeks and then adults emerge in late July when they again feed on the leaves of brassica crops. When temperatures drop in autumn this new generation of beetle heads for shelter and hibernate. Damage to plant roots from the larvae of flea beetle is typically superficial at worst. Damage to brassica leaves from adult flea beetle, resulting in a peppering of holes, can look unsightly, particularly on salad leaves, and can hinder plant growth if excessive. Our salad brassicas seem to be much more susceptible than our other brassica crops like our Red Russian Kale which seems to be hardly affected by the species of flea beetle prevalent in our market garden. Some of you may know I picked up a new hobby during lockdown and that’s GARDENING 🌱🌹🍃 I’m fascinated by how a tiny little radish seed can develop into such a beautiful little vegetable - it looks like a ruby you can eat 😍 I can’t wait to put this in a salad! . The best thing about food is the freshness - ever since I started growing herbs with my family it has elevated our home cooked dishes to another level! On slide 3 you can see from left to right: tarragon, thyme, basil (my favourite) and coriander! . Another thing I wanted to showcase was the rose tree my mum and I planted recently. It started blooming in the sunshine. Note: roses love sun and regular watering but not too much water! ☺️ . A little tender loving care to your garden can go along way - I recommend visiting a local garden centre and buying some seeds and compost and start your gardening journey now that the weather is good! . Todays picks, and I have one more cucumber! (Isnt it perfect looking??) 🤗🥒🙏 Im going to eat it right now! 🤣 You know, I only have one 7x3 foot garden bed, and its produced such an abundance for me since I built it last year. All of my peppers, cucumbers, kale, spinach, eggplants, okra, beans, chives, and chard have come from that bed this season. The tomatoes are all volunteers that have popped up around my backyard, and the zucchini, luffa, and squash are all planted directly into the ground. Its a sizable amount of work but not unmanageable. I manage all of this by myself, and what I cant consume, I share with my family when I have a chance to see them. I dont buy much produce in the swing of summer and winter because I grow some of my most favorite things. You dont have to have a ton of money, or a big team, or tons of space to grow your own food. Just grow your favorite things, and manage as much as you can in the space you have. Hi - we are working as quick as we can to come up with solutions for our customers to be able to shop for fresh fruits and vegetables this Saturday. Here is what we know right now... Our Scottsdale market will continue at the normal time and location this weekend at First Street and Brown on Saturday from 8:00am-1:00pm. We have asked the market operators to move the vendors away from our area to create a more open space to shop. We are restricting shoppers to 20 at a time for your safety. Our Uptown Saturday location has moved to the Bethany Bible Church at 7th Avenue and Bethany Home Road, 6060 North 7th Avenue. This is a pop up location temporary during this time. The hours are also from 8:00am to 1:00pm on Saturday. We are asking shoppers to give one another space at this location too. We are also coming up with prepacked CSA boxes for those who just want to pick up at the market. The details of this will be released tomorrow as we finalize it. There are three boxes that will each have a different variety of items. We are working on a way for you to reserve your box or boxes online, so we know how many to make. They will be taken to both market locations. If you reserve a box, you have between 8:00am and noon to pick it up, so no rush to get it, we will hold it for you. Any boxes not claimed by noon will be sold. We can not trade items or customize boxes. If you need to share with friends or family, be our guest. We are also working on a way for $200 minimum orders to be made directly into our system as our restaurants do, for those who still want to have a custom order without visiting the markets. This will be rolled out early next week. The details of this are still being figured out. Sorry for the overload of information, we are dealing with circumstances that seem to change by the hour. Don’t forget to like and comment. 🍆 Eggplant and Potato Curry/ Baingan Aloo 🍆 10 - 12 small eggplants 2 medium potatoes, cubed 1 large onion 1 tsp salt or to taste 1 tsp red chili powder ½ tsp red chili flakes 1 tsp cumin ½ tsp turmeric 3 - 4 tbsp any oil or ghee 2 green chillies Cilantro for garnish Fry onion in oil till start to color on edges Add spices and little water so the spices don’t burn. Add the eggplants and potatoes and fry on high heat for 8 minutes Add green chillies and cilantro, cover and cook on low for 5 minutes. Serve with chapati, or Naan. . . This #steakroulade was the perfect way to end week one of virtual choir! The combination of tender #skirtsteaks, melty #mozzarellacheese, and #sundriedtomato was a choir in perfect harmony! You see what I did there!? I’ll be here all day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Looking to impress your next guests? Or try something new? Give these a try! I was inspired from my friend, @seattlebutcherswife ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here’s what we did: •We marinaded 2 pounds (or two rolls) of Skirt Steak in @spanglish_asadero Signature Rub, the juice of one lime, one small yellow onion, 8-10 leaves of fresh basil, and 3 bottles (12 ounces each) of @bundabergdrinks non-alcoholic ginger beer. We marinated for over 24 hours. •After at least 24 hours we removed the steaks and pounded them flat until they were about a 1/2 inch wider then my hand. •We then added thin slices of mozzarella cheese, basil, and sun dried tomato. •Next is the fun part....we rolled it up with our hands. It’s very much like camping! Remember rolling the sleeping bag? It’s just like that. •Lastly, we put three rows of butchers twine and tied a knot so they would stay together. •We smoked these bad boys on my @traegergrills at 325 with Oak pellets until 125. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Pro tips: •Something carbonated REALLY helped the meat be tender. Usually we don’t like skirt steak because it’s so tough. We didn’t even need forks for this! It was amazing. Also, pounding out the meat tenderizes it as well! •When cooking the rolls....make sure you have a pan underneath them because cheese will ooze and get all over the grill. •Butchers twine can be hard to handle. I found it easiest to lay a piece of cut twine down. Then, lift the roll and place it on the twine and tie it up. Nella mia dispensa non manca mai il peperone dolce, secco. Un peperone particolare però, che cresce con la testa all’insù, a “cocce capammonte”. Si coltiva un po’ in tutto in tutta l’Abruzzo, ma va ad Altino il conoscimento dell’eccellenza (e del Presidio Slow Food) dove da un decennio è stata creata un Associazione per lo studio, e la conservazione e valorizzazione di una varietà antica. Il peperone, qui detto anche paesanello, viene raccolto quando il colore diventa rosso intenso, si infilza, con ago e spago all’altezza del peduncolo, e si forma la tradizionale collana, il “crollo”. E poi, sole e aria per asciugarli e seccarli. Infine, un passaggio in forno (in quello a legna, preferibilmente!) per completare il lavoro meticoloso che richiedono. A questo punto possono essere sbriciolati o ridotti in polvere, oppure lasciati interi, conservati appesi nelle cantine di casa, perché fritti sono davvero qualcosa di unico! Senza peperoni dolci secchi non esisterebbero bontà uniche come la ventricina del vastese, il baccalà arrostito che per molti è il piatto della Vigilia di Natale, pizze furjie, rape e fagioli, oppure i semplici spaghetti aglio e olio, che grazie al peperone si colorano di rosso. Insomma, chi non lo ha mai provato, non sa cosa si è perso. Per fortuna c’è rimedio! It’s been awhile since we gave a farm update! Summer crops like tomatoes and peppers are still around, but waning. Our onions and garlic have been cured, winter squash is on its way, and rainbow carrots abound. Our veggie team has been busy making compost, planting cover crop, and building two new caterpillar tunnels for next season...all while growing and harvesting crops for our CSA members. Needless to say, we’re in awe. Livestock has been super busy, too. Our final round of chickens has been processed, our lambs have been weaned from their mothers, and livestock manager Nicole is prepping for cattle breeding. We have lots of great grilling and stewing meat for sale at the farm store, and are additionally proud to have donated hundreds of pounds of beef this season to emergency feeding partners. Its been awhile since weve featured a Core Goods Member, and were excited to introduce Carrie Hohmann Campbell! . Carrie is from Oil City and studied English with a creative writing concentration at @alleghenycollege. She also received her MFA in poetry from the @nyuartsandscience Creative Writing Program and works as an Assistant Professor of English at @edinborou. Carrie has published two poetry chapbooks (the most recent being “Drawn to Extinction” released by Finishing Line Press) and likes to write poetry and nonfiction about places she has traveled, nature, and attempts at homesteading. . Her “food journey” began at a young age when her dad grew veggies in his half acre plot. He inspired Carrie to appreciate how to raise good food and her mom inspired her by cooking with it. Along with her husband Jake Campbell, she became interested in producing pasture-raised meat and started with just 10 laying hens and 15 meat birds, which has grown to rabbits, pigs, meat chickens, laying hens, and occasionally ducks and turkeys. Carrie is trying to read up on permaculture to see how they can integrate its concepts into their garden and surrounding areas. . Carrie’s family tries to eat as many local, seasonal, and minimally processed foods as possible for their health and the health of the planet—which is one reason they shop at Core Goods. Their favorite items include sesame sticks, chocolate chips, peanuts, raisins, dried cranberries, 50/50 flour, soups, kombucha, olive oil, spices, and produce. . “Besides the food, we love reusing our jars and minimizing our use of plastic. Using mesh bags for produce is a big advantage and even with curbside pickup, the produce bags are compostable,” Carrie said. “I was worried how we’d continue to get high quality food during the Coronavirus shutdown, but Core Goods provided a quick, creative, and safe response that kept me out of any mainstream grocery store for two months. Como ustedes saben, amigos agricultores, no es fácil encontrar una calabaza que de frutos, y mucho menos frutos tan grandes y ricos como este!. . Después de haber intentado la siembra de distintas calabazas y fracasar 😐, decidimos probar con esta. . Ella llegó a nosotros un día en el que se alinearon los astros, y nosotros recolectábamos semillas de una granja en California 👩🏻‍🌾. . Cuando la sembramos, nunca imaginamos que su genética era tan buena, y nos sorprendió cuando después de solo dos meses de haber nacido, dio luz a dos florecitas hembra y macho y a la tercera, se asomó el primer fruto. . Ese fruto creció poco, pero decidimos esperar al segundo y al tercero. Luego al cuarto y al quinto. Una sola planta, nos dio alrededor de 8-10 frutos medianos, y uno grande. . ¿Por que da uno grande? Parece ser que ella, la Zuchinni Gigante, nos regala un fruto grande que al dejarlo madurar en la planta, por dentro forma un aproximado de 200 semillitas, que representan a sus hijos para que su genética 🧬 perdure y se siga sembrando y esparciendo por todos los huertos urbanos. . ¡ Ya llevamos 5 generaciones con esta semilla ! Remolachas, Beta vulgaris. Es pariente cercanísimo de la acelga, es totalmente comestible ya que las hojas a veces son mas tiernas y ricas que las de acelga. La remolacha roja es muy dulce y de sabor algo terroso, característico de la remolacha. La amarilla es menos dulce y sin sabor terroso, con un color impresionantemente amarillo. La blanca es muy dulce tambien. La anillada, llamada chioggia, tiene anillos blancos o cremosos y rojos, pero a veces de atenuan y no se ven tan anillados. Son ricas en hierro, ácido fólico, vitaminas C, B. Son muy nutritivas, contienen mucha fibra, y antioxidantes. Combaten el colesterol malo. Hay que comerlas son riquísimas. TAK, ZDECYDOWANIE 😁 Do tej pory trzymałam zioła w kartonie, ale postanowiłyśmy z mamą zrobić kroliczkom więcej przestrzeni na balkonie i zabrałysmy jedna skrzynię do domu.
