Funky. 🥃 You can see this bottle is well-loved. Or empty. Whatever you want to call it. It’s really taken me this whole bottle to get my thoughts together because they’ve been all over the place. At times I love it. At times it’s eh. On paper, it should be a knockout for my preferences. It’s just...funky. 🥃 First off, this purchase was inspired by a very popular SMWS cask pick awhile back. I’d never had Glen Scotia, and that bottle inspired me to check them out. Victoriana’s vitals hit all the good spots for me - it’s mainly ex-bourbon, finished in heavy char oak, un-chillfiltered, uncolored, and bottled at 51.5%. Bam. 🥃 The first thing I noticed about this was just how spicy/strong it was. Absolute full flavor, but the strength is there to the point where I would *almost* exclusively recommend drinking with water. Most tingly 51% I’ve ever had. But the spice is right behind it: huge nutmeg. Once the vanilla and oak come and go, with other ex-bourbon stereotypes, that Glen Scotia “coastal-ness” comes in. There’s that salinity and smoke that is incredibly unique to Glen Scotia. There’s so much going on here, and it’s all turned up to 11, yet sometimes it doesn’t quite meld well enough for me. And sometimes it does. It’s a moody whisky. 🥃 One of the more unique whiskies I’ve had and I’d opine a good value as well. GLENGOYNE 1998/2018 19 YEAR OLD SINGLE CASK #1921, 56.6% and 594 bottles . Feel very lucky to have pulled this bottle at RRP, a rarely seen Glengoyne single cask - my first one. 100% European Oak sherry cask goodness. 🤤 Thanks to @royalmilewhiskies for the safe delivery. . Now with any hot bottle released these days, what’s one of the first things that happens? Some end up on auction! And sure enough, and I saw several listed on the two major auction sites the previous weekend, selling for £290-£300 before commissions/VAT. . If you were the seller, you paid £190 for the bottle, let’s say £10 for delivery, and £5 to list it. That’s an easy £85-£95 profit for basically doing nothing. . So it was interesting to see RMW send an email last Thursday about their new “Drammer’s Reward,” a pro-bottle opening/anti-flipping program. . In an effort to thwart flipping and encourage customers to open their bottles, RMW is doing something interesting. They price certain hot bottles at £5-£10 above RRP. £5 for those under £100, £10 for those over. For online orders, if the customer agrees to have his name and order number written on the bottle, he/she will receive a £10 or £20 voucher to use on the next order. This is optional. For store purchases, if the customer comes back later with the bottle open, he/she gets that same £10 or £20 “reward.” . For store purchases, the voucher entices you to open your bottle. You pay more upfront but you get it back and then some when you crack the bottle. And once one’s open, obviously it can’t be resold or sent to auction. Now I didn’t see any “fine print” about the rules and stipulations... can I come back 5 years later after I finally crack a bottle to receive a voucher? 🤪 . For online orders, the name and order number on the bottle is a deterrent to flipping. I guess you *still* could flip a bottle even if it had your name on it, but then I assume you’d be banned on RMW. If the other shops also cared (I’m not sure they do), they could potentially have a shared blacklist of people not to sell to. . 聖弗力 T.G.L ☇ ⏹Glenlivet 1997/2013 16yo 46% (Signatory Vintage) Old school oloroso style. Single cask, un-chillfiltered and matured in a first-fill sherry butt from Signatory. Obvious chocolate flavor with gentle soot like nice cigars, wet wood, black raisins, figs, prunes and liquorice. Finished with bitter oranges and pepper. After took a few sips of this bottle, made me get an association with an old Armagnac. Here’s a little story about an expensive bottle of scotch… and why you can’t let good things pass you by. I’m ready to say it: my favorite Private Edition! 🥃 Artein checks all the boxes for me. It’s an interesting wine finish (something for which Glenmorangie is well-known), yet it still has a beautiful malt backbone. That’s not easy to pull off, as wine finishes, especially one as robust as this, tend to dominate whiskies. Part of the great balance here is owed to the age of the component whiskies (15- and 21-years-old). While you certainly get dark fruits, tannins, and spice, you also get a wonderfully rich caramel and malt underneath. 🥃 It’s long been a battle between Artein, Ealanta, and Companta (can you believe those three were sequential?!) for my favorite. To my palate, Artein is roughly a better version of Companta. Different whiskies, I know, but both utilize this big wine finish. Artein comes out as more complex. As for Ealanta...well. That might be my favorite again next time you ask me 😏. Let’s call it a week in review?? I don’t know. I’m bored. It was a weird week. Had a tough one mentally as I’m sure is common in a lot of homes so don’t forget folks, you’re not alone. We’ll get through this together. The special thing about this week was the couple days of beautiful weather and seeing more friends in a week than I’ve seen in weeks. I was lucky enough to be able to feed friends and be fed by friends. Pretty cool. Had the honor this week to do a couple lunches for the team @louiseearlbutcher and a family meal for the squad @terra_grandrapids. These places have been grinding to help provide fresh product & delicious and creative meals for our city from the jump. To be able to show even just a bit of appreciation for what they’ve been doing was a treat. I also smashed really dope fried chicken from @terra_grandrapids and was spoiled by the amazing @apbakedgoods and @ryanmcclure713 for both satisfying a sweet tooth for me this week. Oh yeah.... thank you @pebblecreekproduce for the insanely beautiful mushrooms and @aperitivogr for the ridiculous Taleggio (not pictured)... I hope I did them justice with the lasagna. Damn. Karuizawa Vintage 1985 - 2009, Cask No. 7017 - 60.8% Musty and earthy. Sweet elegant sherry in an old library, vellum bindings and dark fruit. Some mellow smoke. The best of the best kind of sherry cask. I have read some reviews saying that this has a lot of sulphur (fireworks), but in a good way. The sample I tried didnt, so this may be another case of sulphur disappearing almost entirely after a bottle has been open for a long time... Distilled in March of 2011, this 2nd fill ex-bourbon Barrel bottled at 62.4% ABV doesn’t pack the immediate punch I was expecting. Not that that’s a bad thing. Wait for it. The punch comes later. . . Das letzte Bild ist von @stormchaser_sued_nrw und wurde am 26.6.2020 aufgenommen. Zusehen sind hier mehrere verzweigte Blitzentladungen auf einem Bild. Die Blitze bauten ihren Blitzkanal vom Boden Richtung Wolke auf. (upward lightning) . . Morgen können sich vor allem in Bayern, Baden-Württemberg und Sachsen entlang einer Konvergenz heftige Gewitter bilden. Diese können von Starkregen, Hagel und Sturmböen begleitet werden. Vorher gelangt im Warmsektor des Tiefs noch einmal energiereiche Luft in die später von den Gewittern betroffenen Regionen. Während es im Norden eher kalt ist (um die 20 Grad Celsius), gibt es im Süden verbreitet über 25 Grad, in Südostbayern sind sogar Werte um die 30 Grad Celsius möglich. Vor allem im Südosten Bayerns sind auch Superzellen (rotierende Gewitter mit getrenntem Auf- und Abwind) möglich. Dann ist auch das Tornadorisiko erhöht. . .
