. It’s finally here! I’ve never been more excited to release a whiskey. . This is our QuintEssential American Single Malt Whiskey. It will hit the shelves this Friday. . There’s a lot that makes this product special- the wine cask influence from our own winery; the different oaks and finishing casks used during aging; the Solera Vat finishing process; etc. But my favorite thing about it is how much fun it creates for our team. . Each batch of the QuintEssential represents a new “fill” of our Solera Vat. And each time we fill our Solera Vat, the entire production team (and sometimes even non-production employees) gets to taste through a bunch of different barrels in order to determine which barrels should be added to the Vat. It’s a ton of fun. . I’m proud of our entire team for the work they put into this product. From the whiskey itself to the labeling and branding, it’s all perfect. Old Forester 1920 Vs Wild Turkey Rare Breed I’ve been wanting to review Old Forested 1920 for awhile but was having trouble coming up with a suitable comparison. It’s one of my favorite always-available bottles, and then I realized another of my favorite always-available bottles is also the same proof. So which is the better buy? Wild Turkey) 1116.8 proof. $49 -The nose to me is overwhelmingly vanilla and spearmint, with some alcohol heat and mild spice. -The palate opens with brown sugar and vanilla, then some barrel char, and LOTS of vanilla all the way though until the mint starts to come in. -The medium-long finish is more spearmint mixed in with oak, mild spice, and more vanilla sweetness. Overall I really enjoy this pour, but it is a vanilla-mint bomb without a ton of complexity. Old Forester) 115 proof. $59 -The nose is light and sweet with stone-fruit, spice and oak notes. -The palate start somewhat hot, but caramel and vanilla sweetness quickly take over, then the baking spices of nutmeg, cinnamon and clove come in, and finally some stone-fruit appears. -The Medium finish is also initially sweet, but moves into more rye-spices, and a pleasant heat. Overall I really enjoy the flavors of this bottle, but it is a little hot, and a couple drops of water really helps the fruity sweetness open-up. VERDICT) I really need to stop putting such evenly matched bottles up against each other LOL! In this case I would again advise that both these bottles be on your shelves. However, for my palate the added complexity and fruit of the Old Forester makes it the slight favorite here, and Fancy Glencairn makes a triumphant return to the ring! Xicaru Silver showcases 100% Maguey espadin. Its natural smoky flavor is derived by cooking the maguey in a conical stone oven on mesquite and ocote, woods native to Oaxaca. The cooked maguey is then tahona mashed, fermented naturally in open-air pine vats, and double-distilled over a wood fire. Xicaru Silver 102° differs from Xicaru Silver in the way it is distilled. A narrower cut is taken from the heart, where the alcohol, smoke and maguey are more concentrated. Xicaru Silver and Xicaru Silver 102° both utilize traditional mezcal production methods passed down from generation to generation. Xicaru Pechuga Mole Mezcal is made by hand. The maguey is cooked in an underground stone oven, tahona-mashed, fermented in open-air pine vats, and distilled over a wood fire. Nose: A bit of ethanol on the fist sniff but not overwhelming. Brown sugar and Welchs white grape juice. GLENGOYNE 1998/2018 19 YEAR OLD SINGLE CASK #1921, 56.6% and 594 bottles . Feel very lucky to have pulled this bottle at RRP, a rarely seen Glengoyne single cask - my first one. 100% European Oak sherry cask goodness. 🤤 Thanks to @royalmilewhiskies for the safe delivery. . Now with any hot bottle released these days, what’s one of the first things that happens? Some end up on auction! And sure enough, and I saw several listed on the two major auction sites the previous weekend, selling for £290-£300 before commissions/VAT. . If you were the seller, you paid £190 for the bottle, let’s say £10 for delivery, and £5 to list it. That’s an easy £85-£95 profit for basically doing nothing. . So it was interesting to see RMW send an email last Thursday about their new “Drammer’s Reward,” a pro-bottle opening/anti-flipping program. . In an effort to thwart flipping and encourage customers to open their bottles, RMW is doing something interesting. They price certain hot bottles at £5-£10 above RRP. £5 for those under £100, £10 for those over. For online orders, if the customer agrees to have his name and order number written on the bottle, he/she will receive a £10 or £20 voucher to use on the next order. This is optional. For store purchases, if the customer comes back later with the bottle open, he/she gets that same £10 or £20 “reward.” . For store purchases, the voucher entices you to open your bottle. You pay more upfront but you get it back and then some when you crack the bottle. And once one’s open, obviously it can’t be resold or sent to auction. Now I didn’t see any “fine print” about the rules and stipulations... can I come back 5 years later after I finally crack a bottle to receive a voucher? 🤪 . For online orders, the name and order number on the bottle is a deterrent to flipping. I guess you *still* could flip a bottle even if it had your name on it, but then I assume you’d be banned on RMW. If the other shops also cared (I’m not sure they do), they could potentially have a shared blacklist of people not to sell to. . Last dram before a day off for Labor Day tomorrow. Early we were over at my brother-in-law’s where he offered his mystery decanter for us to guess what was inside. The choices were bourbon, rye, or scotch. . What I nosed and tasted was a low proof and watery scotch whisky. It was really bad. Having an idea of what bottles he had open, I guessed... well, check my stories for that. 🤪🤭 . Well, I got the low proof, watery, and bad correct but the whisky wrong - it was the Chivas Mizunara. What can I say, even considering its affordable price, I’m just not a fan of it. I’d rather have an Old Pulteney 12 for the same price. . And that’s it, I’m done with mystery decanters. No one ever put a Balvenie 40 in one of those. 🤣😂 . Now this is much better than that Chivas, a classic Balvenie I opened the other night - a 2014 cask of the 15 Year Old Single Barrel. The foundation for so many Balvenie expressions can be found here. A delicious combination of vanilla, honey, and light wood spices. Non chill-filtered at a nice strength. Yes, please. . I’m a big fan of the 15 single barrel sherry as well, but wouldn’t mind at all if this one made a reappearance. . Never a bad day for a Private Edition repost. 🥃 I haven’t posted much recently frankly because I haven’t gotten any new bottles and haven’t been reviewing much of late. Hopefully that changes soon! I’ve got a few of the brand new Glenmo Malaga cask bottles coming my way upon release. In the meantime, here’s my proudest scotch achievement: collecting all 10 of the Glenmorangie Private Edition. Todays sip of choice? @olddominick Huling Station Bourbon Whiskey. It is a homage to the Memphis whiskeys of 1866, with its high-rye mash bill, reminiscent of those offered by founder Domenico Canale in his heyday. Our cigar for this round is the Arturo Fuente Gran Reserva. This cigar is on the mild bordering on medium side. It does have great flavor. This cigar is a staple in the Arturo Fuente line up, and definitely one of our favourites. Made in the Dominican Republic and using a Cameroon wrapper, the cigar is a solid choice for a pairing with the Balvenie. . Personally I would add a couple of drops of water in the glass to the scotch so it opens up nicely and rounds out the edges. This will allow a better experience, since being a milder cigar the scotch might be borderline overpowering the cigar for a less experienced whisky drinker. Happy Friday! I’m finishing out the week with a fresh cork pop on this @districtmagnus Batch 3 Murray Hill Club Special Release. Boasting only 1211 bottles this blend of 10-20 year old MGP Bourbon was finished in Malt and Cider casks. I found Master Blender Nancy Fraley’s tasting notes so interesting that I had to include them in this post: “It has aromas of creamy brown butter with cinnamon toast, vanilla shortbread, gingersnap cookie, and Italian biscotti drizzled with thick apple blossom honey. As the whiskey notes evolve in the glass, the floral and fruity top notes of apple blossom give way to deeper, darker shades of marzipan, pear tart, oatmeal raisin cookie, and caramel pudding with sea salt. The initial palate entry has hints of yeast acidity and dryness from the cider, but quickly gives way to sweeter, more aromatic flavors of quince marmalade, cast iron skillet-baked Southern peach cobbler with a buttery yeast biscuit crust, followed by ephemeral notes of Atlantic Ocean brine. The whiskey finishes in a trio of waves of acidity, sweetness, apple skin tannins, barrel spice, and saline.” Well there you go... The Bourbon Brotherhood bottles of George Remus are at Westport Whiskey & Wine in Louisville, KY. You will really love the barrel that we selected, which is barrel #443 distilled in 2014 and stored in warehouse J/M. It has a lower rye content mash bill of 75% corn, 21% rye and 4% malted barley. It is bottled at cask strength of 115 proof. The result is a very rich bourbon, not peppery, with notes of brown sugar, cinnamon and some honey. The finish is quite the experience with the sweet flavors tapering off gradually to a faint lemon essence, followed by a delayed, pleasant wave of moderate heat. Youll find it the perfect Autumn sipping bourbon. The sample we tasted was pulled from our barrel on 11/11/19 (Veterans Day) and tasted on 2/17/20 (President’s Day), so we are named it our Presidential Veteran selection. This barrel was selected by five members of the Bourbon Brotherhood, including First Sergeant Jason Hunt. ‼️Exciting News ‼️ Tomorrow we are releasing our next installment of experimental whiskeys: a Rum Barrel Finished Whiskey using a barrel from our good friends @maggiesfarmrum. The whiskey is a 50/50 blend of our Rye and Bourbon and has rested in their used rum barrel for an additional 4 months to soak up all of the rum sweetness. We wanted to create a unique whiskey blend that married nicely with the flavors from the rum barrel - after several trials, we found that rye and bourbon at 50% each worked best. We bottled it at 100 proof as that is where the whiskey and rum flavors were perfectly balanced. It is one of our favorite bottling and will be sure to go fast! Bottles ($15 for each 200mL bottle) will be available tomorrow both online (shipping and pickup, link in bio) and in store. Funky. 🥃 You can see this bottle is well-loved. Or empty. Whatever you want to call it. It’s really taken me this whole bottle to get my thoughts together because they’ve been all over the place. At times I love it. At times it’s eh. On paper, it should be a knockout for my preferences. It’s just...funky. 🥃 First off, this purchase was inspired by a very popular SMWS cask pick awhile back. I’d never had Glen Scotia, and that bottle inspired me to check them out. Victoriana’s vitals hit all the good spots for me - it’s mainly ex-bourbon, finished in heavy char oak, un-chillfiltered, uncolored, and bottled at 51.5%. Bam. 🥃 The first thing I noticed about this was just how spicy/strong it was. Absolute full flavor, but the strength is there to the point where I would *almost* exclusively recommend drinking with water. Most tingly 51% I’ve ever had. But the spice is right behind it: huge nutmeg. Once the vanilla and oak come and go, with other ex-bourbon stereotypes, that Glen Scotia “coastal-ness” comes in. There’s that salinity and smoke that is incredibly unique to Glen Scotia. There’s so much going on here, and it’s all turned up to 11, yet sometimes it doesn’t quite meld well enough for me. And sometimes it does. It’s a moody whisky. 🥃 One of the more unique whiskies I’ve had and I’d opine a good value as well. Elijah Craig Small Batch Vs. Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel I am seeing a diverse range of opinions on the new Toasted Barrel bottle. What I want to know is if you like Elijah Craig (which I do!), is the Toasted Barrel worth the $15-20 premium over Small Batch?? SB) $34, 94proof. This has always been a great reasonably priced bourbon. -The nose starts with classic bourbon oak, caramel, vanilla, tobacco, and leather. -The palate starts with notes of allspice, cinnamon, and oak, and moves to some apple fruitiness, vanilla, and honey sweetness. -The medium finish has more spice and heat along with a lingering honey sweetness. TB) $49, 94proof. -The nose here is surprisingly different. Much more sour-oak, and lots of buttered-toast, along with vanilla, and leather. -The palate is definitely more flavorful and complex than Small Batch. Initially I get cinnamon-sugar-buttered-toast, which moves into some apple, cherry, marshmallow, vanilla, caramel, and baking spices. -The finish is medium in length, with slightly-tart apple, some dark cherry, spicy oak, and tannic leather. VERDICT) Overall I would say Toasted Barrel wins decisively! Making this back-to-back wins for Fancy Glencairn! The bigger question is this: Is this worth the extra money? For me I would say definitely. My palate really prefers the extra complexity and oak that the Toasted Barrel finish brings. However, if you have an oak-sensitive palate you may disagree, and I would recommend trying before you buy. Johnnie Walker Blue Label, The Casks Edition, Bottle no. CE2 40933, 55.8% abv. These cask strength blue labels were initially released in 2012 and were a welcome addition after all the complaining by aficionados. The additional marketing has Johnnie Walkers Master Blender Jim Beveridge stating, Only one in ten thousand of our casks have sufficient character for Blue Label and in creating this special edition we really wanted to showcase the incredible flavours that come from the casks themselves. Other fans have wondered about that statement, and discovered from responses that Diageo focuses on this Casks Edition and the Special Annual Releases. Although I wouldnt know what the trends were 50 years ago, recent trends within the aged malts and grains industry has been to leave it at cask strength, no chill filtering, and no color added to the juice. Nose: hints of blacktop and tar, sweet sugar, a sort of sweet cardboard, becomes a feint perfume with time. Palate: light to medium body, balanced, initial palate is noticeably sweet, hints of a sweet fruitless cocktail, mid palate extends the initial palate and shows more honey, salty honey bread, salted olive oil with focaccia, a cocktail sour, sour melons, back palate has more roasted graham crackers, that honey coating that most glistening crackers get in Japan, did I detect a hint of smoke? hints of a sort of peat but the honey makes it hard to distinguish if its the powerful Islay type or boiled vegetables Highland type. Finish: medium, honey, salt, eventually some bread and malt. Could feel a good amount of grain whisky in here sans the vanilla. A nice pour from JW, quite sweet and salty aspects show up... not sure if Caol Ila was the workhorse... is Glen Elgin in the Diageo stable? This reminds me of those sweet Glen Elgin, Glenburgie, Balvenie styles. I’m ready to say it: my favorite Private Edition! 🥃 Artein checks all the boxes for me. It’s an interesting wine finish (something for which Glenmorangie is well-known), yet it still has a beautiful malt backbone. That’s not easy to pull off, as wine finishes, especially one as robust as this, tend to dominate whiskies. Part of the great balance here is owed to the age of the component whiskies (15- and 21-years-old). While you certainly get dark fruits, tannins, and spice, you also get a wonderfully rich caramel and malt underneath. 🥃 It’s long been a battle between Artein, Ealanta, and Companta (can you believe those three were sequential?!) for my favorite. To my palate, Artein is roughly a better version of Companta. Different whiskies, I know, but both utilize this big wine finish. Artein comes out as more complex. As for Ealanta...well. That might be my favorite again next time you ask me 😏.
