Have you been relying on the ‘hit and miss’ or ‘I hope it works’ method of creating textile art? Embracing a more systematic approach fuelled Sue Stone’s hand stitch practice. She went from lost and unconfident to inspired and successful. She became a textile artist with a clear and distinctive voice. After a major failure – a rejection from Embroiderers’ Guild – Sue went back to the drawing board. The ambitious projects she’d been attempting had left her feeling overwhelmed, confused and disappointed. But she still loved to stitch. She started making quick and easy samples in front of the TV. Little did she know, this was the start of a system for experimentation that would transform her textile art. Discoveries in sampling made their way onto Christmas cards that Sue gave to relatives and close friends, one of whom was her ex-drawing tutor Alf Ludlam. Alf saw potential and gave Sue a set of photographs of the medieval Thornton Abbey as a source of inspiration. The patterns and textures in the images fascinated Sue. She began exploring ways to emulate them with stitch, again using sampling as her starting point. This project galvanised Sue’s process and led to a full series of works. There were early signs of what would become her signature style. With each new piece her voice strengthened. This collection was exhibited at the local library in the first of many solo shows. Her success was no accident. Sue had developed a system for experimentation with stitch. By asking ‘What if?’ she had a starting point. And sampling offered a way of trying out ideas before transferring them to larger pieces. Best of all it was manageable; through her samples Sue was constantly taking steps towards finding her own take on traditional techniques. That sense of progression motivated her to continue her creative journey, which has led to a style that is personal and highly distinctive.
