Insecurities are probably the only constant in this ever changing world. Be it that paunch you just noticed, the acne, the social anxiety you have or the constant over thinking you do, we all have our fears. But then, whats a human without imperfections? Its our imperfections that make us who we are. To accept our imperfections is the first step in the process of doing away with our insecurities. Spending time with your own self, healing yourself through art are the keystones in a journey to a self empowered self. Was buying a house on 75 acres during the pandemic, sight-unseen, in a state I had never been to before a risky move? Yes, some might say so. Just because you are the most beautiful person in the world like Stevie, the most wealthy, or the best athlete, doesn’t mean you don’t suffer depression. We profoundly mischaracterize the nature of the disease, in that we don’t actually think depression is a real disease. If someone passes away from cancer, no one would say “But they were so pretty, how could they die from cancer?” Depression doesn’t know what you look like, it doesn’t know your politics, or how much money you have in the bank. You never get over a loved one’s suicide, you learn to live with it. I love talking about Stevie though. Tuesdays are even harder when they’re Mondays. I swear that the mere act of waking up is the hardest thing I do all day long. I feel like I’m pulling myself out of a coma each morning after not being able to sleep all night. This distance learning I’m helping my littles with is so much more complicated and time consuming than I ever could’ve imagined. I just sat down a few minutes ago. I’ve been going since 5:30am and now, it is a little after 1am. My whole body is throbbing and I feel almost flu-like, certain I have a bit of a fever. People say fuck cancer. And fuck it, for real. There’s this road behind my old house that leads to the woods. I remember it clearly, like when I lost my childhood. I drive it almost every day in the deepest part of my mind. You, petal to the floor in the front seat screaming that life is never kind and I was hanging out the side window with the wind in my hair. Remember when we were there? You reached for my hand, but I gave my heart instead, so you made me a promise to keep it safe and in my head you were the kind of boy who I could trust. With something so fragile. You swore as the tires kicked up dust that we would be forever. We would never die. But that damn dirty road is where I learned that boys know how to lie...that boys take joy in making pretty girls cry. You said your arms were heavy, said you were done. That I was too good, swore there was no one...else. But I knew. It wasn’t true. There are roses blooming now. Back amongst the trees. And when I go home I think of you, when I can smell them in the breeze and I wonder what made such a beautiful boy decide that breaking me into pieces was the the best way to hide a fucking change of mind. You were right...life is always incredibly unkind. •••••• . . . This piece is for the @yourheartbeatsloud prompt to take an old piece and rework it. The second slide is the original poem I wrote in 10th grade about a boy who broke my heart. Clearly I still harbor some unresolved issues over it. And I may or may not have always been very dramatic. 🤣 oh and that last slide is me at 16!
