I remember as a kid I saw Little Richard on TV. He was so amazing I did an impression of him at school the classroom just because. I was always the quiet kid but he gave me confidence to sing and dance for people. I will never get my first praise and I never forget that it was because of him that inspired me. Thank you Little Richard for all the music you created that influenced generations of music without them knowing. RIP 🙏🏾 - @mrjbrownmusic on Instagram

“The first Charlie Parker number I heard was called Blue Bird. I was blown away by the propulsion, the charisma, and the joyful spirit of it. Also the stellar saxophone playing, which technically is on the highest level. There was a completeness to it, which I’ve spent my whole life trying to emulate – which is nothing to do with imitation, because my style is very different. It has the balanced quality of all the great art that I really love. It’s as much intellectual as it is soulful, it speaks to sorrow and it speaks to joy, with a undertone of compassionate humour. There’s something so human about what Charlie Parker does.” Rudresh Mahanthappa. ********************************* #charlieparker #birdlives #yardbird #jazz #bebop #altosax #birdland - @yardbirdlives on Instagram

- @aureavie on Instagram

It turned out that I and my friend Barrett were welcome to come backstage as well. We were escorted into an empty room about an hour before the show, and in a minute or so, Bruce pops in the door, enthusiastically grabs each of us in a handshake, makes sure he knows our names, and we start yakking away. Dana is the alpha male here because he controls what the station plays, but Bruce makes sure to include Barrett and me in the conversation, which lasted 20 minutes or more. He couldnt have been nicer or more welcoming. We were all kind of blown away to be honest. Even Dana who had met dozens of major players in the music biz! Oh by the way, the show was spectacular! His shows were not yet the marathon 4 hour spectacles they morphed into later, but he played about 25 songs. Critics have said this tour was the impetus for him reaching major stardom. SJCFTPA was a 2,400 seat venue. It was the last time I would see him in such a small place. - @chbradfo on Instagram

Today in Black History: Otis Redding, one of the greatest American soul singers/songwriters, was born on this day in 1941 in Dawson, Georgia. Redding was raised in Macon, where he started singing at a young age and was influenced by musicians such as Sam Cooke and Little Richard. His breakthrough into soul music came when Redding drove to Memphis, Tennessee with Johnny Jenkins and the Pinetoppers for a recording session at Stax Records in 1962. The Stax co-owner Jim Stewart allowed Otis to cut a few songs at the end of the recording session. The result was “These Arms of Mine”, which released that same year and launched his career. This was the first of many hit singles (including “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” “Respect,” and “Try a Little Tenderness) and his open-throated, emotional style and powerful singing became the measure of the decades great soul artists. In December of 1967, Redding and four members of his band were killed when their chartered plane crashed into a Wisconsin lake. He was only 26 years old. Shortly before his death, he recorded his number one hit single “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” which shot to the top of the charts. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy awards in 1999. 📷: KALW Local Public Radio #todayinblackhistory #blackhistoryisamericanhistory #sallieellisdavishouse #otisredding - @sallieedavis on Instagram

Happy birthday Bud Powell! Born in Harlem in 1924, the celebrated pianist and composer began his musical education at home with his father, who also played piano. Powell was taken under Thelonious Monks wing (the older pianist would write the song In Walked Bud for his friend) and came to prominence playing with Sarah Vaughan, Fats Navarro, Dexter Gordon, and many others. In 1947, he recorded his first session as leader alongside Max Roach and Curly Russell; not long after, he joined Miles Davis, Max Roach, and Tommy Potter for a session led by Charlie Parker. Powell cemented his role as one of bebops pioneers, continuing to record and perform until his life was tragically cut short. Speaking on Powells talents Miles Davis said, Bud was a genius piano player–the best there was of all the bebop piano players. - @jazzdotorg on Instagram

Born as Samuel Cook. Sam added the “e” at the end of his name to indicate a transition in his life and career. As the child of a minister in the Church of God in Christ, he began his career as a gospel artist. His success came in a group called the Soul Stirrers where he would often take the lead vocal. Cooke’s ambitions were for his sound and influence to reach further than the church and in 1956 he released the song “Lovable” (a remake of the gospel song “Wonderful”). This was the beginning of a successful career as a pop artist which set the stage for many artists including Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye and many others. Perhaps one of his most famous songs is , A Change Is Gonna Come, it is considered a classic protest song from the era of the Civil Rights Movement In 1999, Cooke was honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2008 Cooke was named the fourth Greatest Singer of All Time by Rolling Stone. - @blackmusichistory on Instagram
