23 years ago, Jesse Teichelman was flown from Perth to Melbourne just days after he was born, to receive lifesaving heart surgery at The Royal Children’s Hospital. Born with a congenital heart disease known as truncus arteriosus, Jesse’s little heart had only one artery instead of two, meaning that blood wasn’t being pumped to the right places. After a 19 hour surgery in his first days of life, Jesse received a replacement artery and valves in his heart, which has now helped him live a mostly-normal life. 9 years ago this day a baby was born to me and what a blessing this ride has been. ❤️ By now I have learnt, as they say, what it’s like to have my heart walking around in another body! 🤪 Thanks to this ball of energy, my goofy, crazy, impulsive side is alive n kicking but today guess am allowed a ‘sentimenty’ mommy moment 🙂 - 9 years I posted this photograph of ours on my blog and wrote this post - “There is so much happening in the world and so much to write about, but right now I am happy to be in this space curled around the little finger of my baby. I have never been great around babies. They’re ultimately adorable but I have no clue what to do with them! So when the idea of having one myself came around, it was exciting and terrifying in equal proportions. I shan’t go into the nine months of prep that got us here but I cant help writing about what it feels like to have a baby – mainly because he has completely taken my life over. I am in love, as they say, at a “cellular” level and like any new mom – cant stop gushing about his pink toes. 🙂 In less than a month he has taught me more than I have known all these years. Often times new parents are surprised at how little it takes to feed their newborn. When they see the small amount of colostrum their body is producing in the first days after birth they will sometimes worry if that is in fact enough. Most of the time, it is! Your newborn only needs about 1-1.5tsp (5-7ml) of your colostrum in the first two days of life. By day 3 they are eating more, about 3/4oz-1oz (22ml-30ml) per feeding. More times than not your body is making enough for your newborn in those first few days. If you’re pregnant and planning to breastfeed, get informed about how your body works, what helps this process, what can hinder the process and how much your baby needs.
