DAY 8: Charlie “Chalo” Quintana Charlie came from El Paso to Los Angeles as a teenager, infusing a little bit of that Tex-Mex spice of drumming with his early punk band the Plugs, then Cruzados and the Havalinas. One of my favorite aspects of “Chalos”playing was his unique style and feel. He had the ability to switch gears, and the instinct to adapt his playing style to fit into a multitude of artists over his 30 year career, playing with Bob Dylan to Social Distortion. Smokey Hormel, our long time band member and all things fretted historian, of course knew Ian from I believe a Rick Rubin project they worked on together. He invited Ian down to this Austin City Limits performance. I had seen Ian’s “Bump Band” perform in Austin several times and had been as inspired by them as much as anything he had done w all of the greats he’d already been associated w in the past. starstruck is an understatement. In person he could not have made me feel more at ease as he was the literal fun-lovin, easy-goin’ cartoon character and epitome of the classic rock, British Blues-er ethos. We talked for hours and then we were both wisked away. He died within the year. That one time in 2013 when the stars aligned and my girlfriend used her smarts and charm to finagle some sketchy backstage passes from a famous person in order to try to meet Nick Cave in his green room after the show at the Ryman and we fabricated this story that we were with 91.1 Memphis radio doing a “Behind the Headlines” feature and our boss gave us these passes. We got through two security guards and a questioning tour manager to get this picture while Nick was putting on the slickest ‘kimono bomber’ embroidered with tigers. I’ll never forget the cold-yet-warm gazing stare Warren Ellis gave me when I sat down on the chair across from him. Hyvää syntymäpäivää 70-vuotiaalle Pave Maijaselle. Tutustuimme vasta viisi vuotta sitten Vain elämää -kuvauksissa. Meillä synkkasi heti hyvin: mieleen jäi monia hauskoja hetkiä, kun kerroimme kuvausten lomassa toisillemme tarinoita — vaikka rehellisyyden nimissä Pavella oli tietysti taskussaan muutama anekdootti enemmän kuin minulla. Koin hengenheimolaisuutta, koska Pave on juuri sellainen tekijä, millainen olen itsekin halunnut olla: enemmän muusikko kuin artisti. Multi-instrumentalisti, joka viihtyy hyvinkin erilaisissa musiikillisissa vesissä. Ei mikään markkinatutkimusten pohjalta rakennettu artistibrändi, vaan vanhan koulukunnan musamies. Tällaisena tekijänä Pave on minulle ehdottamasti esikuva. Suurmestari. Kuulin Paven sairaudesta viime vuoden loppupuolella. Vielä tammikuussa hän oli siinä kunnossa, että jaksoi tulla oluttuopin ääreen tapaamaan minua ja Maija Vilkkumaata. Tuo Leijuvassa Lahnassa vietetty istunto jää pysyvästi mieleen. Minuun teki suuren vaikutuksen se, miten positiivinen Paven katsantokanta kaikesta huolimatta oli. Ei katkeruutta, vaan kiitollisuutta. Soitot oli tuossa vaiheessa jo soitettu, mutta silti Pave oli täynnä intoa kertoessaan tulevasta valokuvanäyttelystään ja tekeillä olevasta elämäkerrastaan. Lämmitti mieltä nähdä, ettei hän nähnyt elämänsä olevan ohi, vaan edessä oli yhä asioita, joita hän odotti riemulla. Tuntui myös todella hyvältä nähdä Pave pari viikkoa myöhemmin Emma-gaalassa pokkaamassa erikois-Emmaa. Kukaan ei olisi ansainnut enempää tuota huomionosoitusta. Olen niin iloinen siitä, että hän sai sen vielä siinä vaiheessa, kun pystyi tulemaan itse paikalle. Pave on synttärihaastatteluissaan kertonut myyneensä soittimensa pois. Minulla on kunnia kantaa jatkossa yhtä noista soihduista: Paven ikoninen Telecaster on nyt minulla. Rakastan tuota kitaraa, se on luultavasti paras soittimeni. Siitä huolimatta antaisin sen hetkeäkään epäröimättä takaisin, jos Pave nyt pirauttaisi, ja sanoisi pystyvänsä taas soittamaan. DAY 7: VINNY APPICE (pronounced: App-ah-see) DIO, Black Sabbath, Last In Line Perhaps pronouncing their last names differently, is a way that younger brother, Vinny, is avoiding being in the shadows of older brother, Carmine Appice (pronounced: Ah-piece) of Vanilla Fudge/Rod Stewart fame, as well the author of the award winning Realistic Rock drum method book my wife and I, coincidently studied out of during our teenage drum lesson years. And if that wasn’t a mouthful, Carmine is also a drum paraphernalia innovator (his signature model drum sticks feature a really cool, innovative tip cut into the butt end of the stick and he also created his “shade” effect cymbal). It’s pretty fair to say big brother, Carmine is living legend. From Vinny at 16 playing on sessions and doing overdub hand claps in the studio with John Lennon, to becoming one of hard rock’s first call drummers, Vinny’s playing is no bullshit, solid AF! As dark, evil and heavy as his dragon slaying groves are, there is an immense swing to his back beat and pocket! Yes, he has the HUGE drum kits for the “big rock show” and he rips around them to excite and delight the audience, but if you really listen to the meat and potatoes of what he’s playing or choosing NOT to play (aka the space/breath/air in the grooves) it’s like none other. Even though I haven’t had the pleasure of making his acquaintance, from what I gather, Vinny is funny. Really funny, and can light up a room with the many stories only this industry veteran can share.
