Doing art schools today may seem unncessary, ⠀ because thanks to internet and social networks you can share easily same passions and your works. ⠀ Many have become cartoonists, illustrators, musicians without having had an artistic path behind them. ⠀ ⠀ But let me say that those who choose to attend art schools and universities are all earned. Both for the knowledge of history ⠀ and contemporary art, and for various techniques pictorial and graphic in both traditional and digital ways. ⠀ ⠀ Without art school I dont think I wouldve ever learnd to make woodblock prints ( wonderful technique! ) or draw on different media that is not paper or canvas. ⠀ I would never have learned the secrets of oil and tempera techniques ( or even creative techniques like sewing on cloth ),⠀ I wouldnt have today the good knowledge of the types of papers, or even create a paper from scrach. ⠀ Doing design and architecture seems so obvious but then studying it you realize how much theoretical and stylistic knowledge must be taken into consideration. ⠀ And last, since Ive done my first graphic layout project, I feel in love with the sector, studying what is 2D/3D animation and bringing a project linked to music and animation on my last year of university. ⠀ ⠀ It seems obvious to say but schools open your mind and allow you to be able in many more fields than you think, and of course a written degree allows you to have access to companies for a more stable future job, while maybe you continue what is your passion. ⠀ Im doing what I like more but all Ive learned in schools, I feel that they have enriched me and gives me more confidence towards a future full of dreams and expectations.⠀ ⠀ - @huionphilippines on Instagram

A year ago I was pretty sure I was going to die, possibly by my own hand, if the cancer didn’t take me first. I’d just finished radiation on my second tumor, and though I was much better off than I had been after the first tumor - which had trapped me in a hospital bed for two months after they’d removed most of my liver in an attempt to cut the tumor out and things went horribly sideways - I was far from ok. At that point I’d been sick for so long I’d forgotten what an appetite was and was so underweight a passing breeze could send me into hypothermic shock. Despite this, I’d tried to hop a plane to spend my birthday with my brother overseas, and ended up quarantined in the Taipei airport. By the time I got out I’d mentally imploded, and spent the entirety of my trip talking about death, and how unwilling I was to continue felling that shitty in the name of “living.” It turns out, I’d be a horrible companion in an Apocalypse. You’d be running around trying to survive while I walked into the street with my arms wide open in surrender like, ‘let’s get this done, bitchez.’ But I digress. Fortunately, that was a low point, and things have slowly started to turn around since. And though I’m far from healthy and still get man-downed on the regular, these days I’m getting better about getting back up. I honestly think it is the sheer intense will of my friends that keeps me moving forward. Some mornings, when things are rough and I think there is no way I can make it through another day, I just lie awake thinking about all the people I love until my heart is full enough to give me the strength to get out of bed. I don’t know why these people never give up on me, all I know is they are always there to catch me when I fall, and I don’t how I got so lucky. Anyway... I’ve just officially made it through one year tumor free. And I can’t claim any credit for making that happen, but I’ll take the victory anyway. And after a lifetime of hating birthdays, suddenly getting older doesn’t seem so bad anymore.
