Design Emergency special! Alice Rawsthorn and I are the guest editors of the October issue of Wallpaper*, which you can now download for free from the magazine’s website. Guest creative director extraordinaire Frith Kerr designed the cover (you might recognize the unmistakable DE logo) and the DE section. Überphotographer Brigitte Lacombe took everybody’s portraits (via Zoom!) . Alice and I began this project in May, wishing to celebrate the power and range of design by interviewing on IG Live some of the protagonists of the Covid-19 pandemic response—and later on, those that are well positioned to inspire and lead the reconstruction. We wish to thank our colleagues at Wallpaper* for giving us the opportunity to spread the word wider and further. People arriving in Australia could be allowed to quarantine at home under a proposal being considered by health experts. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has confirmed the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee is looking at the safety of home isolation. “When it comes in, that will obviously be determined principally by the health advice that can provide a green light to those sorts of options,” he told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday. In the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic, people arriving in Australia quarantined at home until hotel systems were established. #ArarioGalleryExhibition #KIAF2020 #FeaturedArtists ⠀ Today’s KIAF OVR 2020 artist from Arario is BOO Jihyun. ⠀ BOO Jihyun creates three-dimensional and installation works using motives from the sea and the environment based on memories of her childhood spent on Jeju Island. The artist’s inspirations from the sea as well as her autobiographical memories and experiences are amplified through the visualization of her works. By reinterpreting immaterial elements of the sea, including light and darkness, sound, and horizon, through abandoned boats and discarded fishing lamps, the artist questions the condensed timeline of the past, present, and future. BOO, who continually researches topics relating to environmental issues and sustainable art, has been invited to participate in various international land-nature installation art biennales and events such as the Vladivostok Biennale. ⠀ “Net-Being” (2020), which is currently on view in KIAF OVR 2020 has been produced using discarded fishing lamps, which is representative of BOO’s practice. ⠀ Dimly glowing in the darkness, the fishing lights are a reflection of the artist’s fond memories of the fishing boats floating on the shimmering Jeju sea in the depths of night. Normagrup, la empresa española de diseño y fabricación de luminarias, lanzó al mercado su nueva línea de equipos Trazzo SaLuz® UV-C, la cual consiste en dispositivos que emiten radiación ultravioleta para eliminar virus, bacterias y patógenos. Con estos dispositivos se puede desinfectar y esterilizar diferentes espacios sin recurrir a sustancias químicas ni depender de la labor humana. La luz UV-C utiliza longitudes de onda específicas del espectro ultravioleta, típicamente entre 200 y 280 nanómetros, la cual causa reacciones fotoquímicas en el ADN y ARN de patógenos resultando en la desactivación del mismo y su incapacidad de reproducirse. Este tipo de tecnología ha sido adoptada por ejemplo, por la Autoridad de Transporte Metropolitano de la ciudad de Nueva York (MTA) para erradicar el SARS-COV-2 del material rodante (vagones de metro, autobuses, vagones de tren, vehículos de tránsito), así como de lugares fijos (salas de descanso, centros de tecnología, centros de operaciones, oficinas, etc.). Debido a que la luz UV-C puede causar daños a la piel y a la vista a las personas y animales, Normagrup ha incorporado en sus equipos varios mecanismos de seguridad y advertencias, incluyendo una fuente luminosa y sonora que se ponen en funcionamiento un minuto antes de inicie la desinfección y un sensor el cual al detectar la presencia de alguien, automáticamente apaga su operación. Los equipos Trazzo SaLuz® UV-C cumple con la normativa de la especificación UNE (UNE 0068), como dispositivo aplicado a la desinfección. Este es un excelente mecanismo de asepsia para diversos espacios tales como clínicas, consultorios, colegios, oficinas, gimnasios, centros comerciales y hoteles.
