It’s always amazing how well these bad boys can hide. We had watched this group of bulls bed down on this hill side a few hours earlier with a bull that Rod was pumped to go after. After a good hike up the adjacent draw we began the search to try and locate where the group had bedded. After a few hours we were able to finally see some movement and this bull made himself known and helped us to locate the group. Now it was the waiting game to see if the bull we were after would clear the trees before it got dark and within range. Luck was on our side and a while later the bull eventually made his way out of his bed and the rest is history. Time to do it again boys! #elk #17 #NV - @generalunit on Instagram

Trip Plan Tuesday. 🐾 Bear sightings & some encounters have been prevalent this summer. 🐾 Our friends @wildsafebc recommend; . Surprising a bear or encountering a food-conditioned bear should be avoided. Here are some #tripplantuesday tips to reduce the chances of this happening: 🐻 Watch for bear signs like scat, tracks, freshly overturned logs, fresh claw marks on trees 🐻Talk or sing to avoid surprising a bear. Be cautious around running water, thick brush or high wind that may mask your presence. Bear bells are not recommended as the high-pitched tinkle does not travel as far and is not recognized as a human. 🐻Be aware of your surroundings and do not use headphones when hiking, biking or running in bear country. 🐻Manage your attractants and never put someone else at risk by leaving organics behind. Pack out what you pack in. Tossing organics (apple cores and banana peels) can attract wildlife to a roadside which may result in a vehicle collision. 🐻Avoid hiking alone. Travelling with another person results in more noise and may also help dissuade a bear from approaching. 🐻 Keep pets leashed or under control when in bear country. In a review of black bear attacks, dogs were involved in over 50% of black bear inflicted injuries on humans*. Dogs may be perceived as a potential threat or prey. 🐻 Use extra caution in bear habitat and where sightlines are poor. This includes berry bushes with ripe fruit, salmon-bearing streams and other areas bears are known to frequent. 🐻 If you find a carcass leave the area immediately and notify the Conservation Officer Service and/or landowner. 🐻 Take training such as a Wildlife Awareness and Safety Course offered by WildSafeBC that shows the “Staying Safe in Bear Country” video. The death of a bear near a Port Coquitlam school Sept. 21 is drawing heat from neighbours who say conservation officers were overzealous in handling a complaint. What started as a call by the school principal at Birchland elementary school about a bear in a school field turned frightening at neighbouring Cedar Drive elementary, say parents, who said they were shocked to see a conservation officer with a gun and saddened to hear the bear had been killed. However, it turns out the bear wasn’t intentionally killed but was tranquilized to be assessed for possible relocation but died when it hit the ground. In what Insp. Murray Smith of the BC Conservation Officer Service said was a rare but unfortunate outcome, the bear never revived after it fell 12 feet from the tree. “The officer didn’t realize it actually died — 12 feet isn’t very high — and then they loaded it in the trap and the officer was waiting for it to revive, and the bear didn’t revive and we recognized the bear died in the fall.” “The bear was no threat, that’s kind of frustrating,” said Stacey Gokool, who was walking with her son to her car at about 3 p.m., when school let out that afternoon. She said she saw police speeding through the school zone and a conservation officer carrying a gun. She and her son were yelled at by the CO to leave the area. There were other children nearby, she said, as school was just letting out. “It was super over-kill,” said Gokool, who suggested officers should have been less threatening around students, some of whom ended up in tears, and used de-escalation techniques to deal with the public and the bear. But for Smith, who has had to tranquillize bears in his 34 years as a CO, a bear hanging out in broad daylight at a school is a cause for concerns and he defended the officer’s actions. However, he said it’s unfortunate the bear died because it could have been a candidate for relocation. A real-life Mama Bear! We were heading back towards the gate during our morning drive when out popped these three Sloth Bears, a mother and two babies. We immediately turned our engine off to not scare them off, and noticed that the mother looked disturbed. They walked right towards us - it seemed like she had been spooked by something in the bushes. The road was quite narrow and had rocks on either side, so we were quietly assessing how they would get passed us. They ended up walking right by the jeep, so much so that at one point, because of the rocks, they were almost level with our seats! We kept still and quiet to not stress her out anymore; we were sure this mama bear would do anything to keep her babies safe. Once they crossed the vehicle, the mother turned to keep an eye on us, and to assess the threat around her. She soon turned back to her babies and scampered down the path, towards a water hole. We didn’t follow her to give her peace of mind, and instead tried to find what had spooked her, but had no luck. When you work with bears you get so accustomed to seeing them eat berries and grass and other vegetation that sometimes it’s easy to forget they are predators. Then one reminds you. Over ten days ago a huge male grizzly (bear 791) took down a huge bull elk in the Yellowstone River and then a few days ago another older big male grizzly (881) pushed 791 off the kill and claimed it. This picture is of 881 a day or two after claiming what was left for himself. Often when a bear gets a kill like this they’ll pick at it until there’s nothing left, and they’re not very generous with their table scraps (not even with ravens, which this bear spent a lot of time chasing). - @grizzlybearfdn on Instagram

I snuck in on this bull on the forth morning of my bow hunt last September. He raked a tree for about five minutes before approaching within 20 yards and sparring with another bull right in front of me. The beautiful Tahoe Black Bear. Lake Tahoe is home to black bears that are known to break into cars and homes when they smell food or anything good like a candle or air freshener. They tear apart trash from unlocked dumpsters so we all must be diligent to not leave food in our cars, lock our doors, and keep our trash properly locked up. Most trash cans and dumpsters in the Tahoe Basin have locks for this reason. Please be responsible when you are in bear country and help us keep Tahoe bears wild. We know how these two feel...it is a hot one out there today! Black bears will seek shade in the canopy of a tree or sprawl their bodies out on a cool surface during hot summer days. Bears expel a lot of energy changing their routes or stepping away from a food source to avoid us, and just like us, sometimes they need to stop everything immediately and rest! We hear from people living all over the North Shore, one trend we see is people living close to our regional parks and busier trails frequently have visitors during the day. Those visitors are often resting in a quiet spot at the back of the property. Given the popularity of our North Shore trails with mountain bikers, trail runners, hikers and dogs, it often allows little time during daylight hours for bears to forage or rest in their home without interruption. We believe the bears are seeking solace in a quiet area where they are not being pushed around by our recreational activities and pets. We love spending time on the trails and support enjoying all the North Shore has to offer, but we must all acknowledge our presence has an impact on wildlife. Please help us to promote tolerance for black bears travelling through our communities and having patience when they take a moment to pause. If a bear is sleeping on your property we advise letting them be, and moving them on with a firm voice from a safe place (deck or open window) once they stir. Bears are calm, intelligent animals, we do not need to be aggressive with them. Bear bangers are not necessary and we never recommend using them in residential areas, they are also a fire hazard! An air horn or clapping are alternatives for making noise, but we see most success when using a firm tone, making eye contact and asserting our human dominance. I get the chance to do a lot of cool stuff throughout the year and I don’t post/share much. It’s just not my personality to draw attention to myself and honestly I like to “fly under the radar”. I personally feel like social media is taking its toll on hunting. Yes it’s good in some regards but it’s definitely not why I hunt. The last two months I haven’t done anything hunting related which if you ask anyone close to me that is unheard of. I got back into another passion I have of snowmobiling and it’s been a good reset for me. I think it’s good to have some variety in your life unlike what I had before. Hunting definitely is a strong passion of mine and I’m lucky to get to do it as much as I do. I drew a Limited Entry lion tag and took this lion back in December thanks to my brother @daxtonkc and friends @brentjeffries55 and @justinhulet4 I’ve really enjoyed all the time I’ve got spend this last year hunting with the hounds. A cinnamon phase black bear follows its mother through the Averill’s Viking Creek Wetland Preserve earlier this summer. Numerous reports indicate the cinnamon bear is now on his/her own and getting into some trouble with human attractants. Here are some ways to properly secure your trash and help reducing frequent bear visits to residential areas. · Put trashcans curbside on the morning of pickup, not the night before. · Add hardware to your existing, sturdy trashcan to make it more bear-resistant. · Protect gardens, compost and livestock with electric fencing. · Encourage your homeowners association to institute ordinances on keeping foods that attract wildlife secure. · Feed pets indoors or bring in dishes after feeding. · Clean grills and store them in a locked, secure place · Remove wildlife feeders or make them bear-resistant. · Pick ripe fruit from trees and remove fallen fruit from the ground. ·Inquire whether local waste service providers offer bear-resistant trash cans or dumpsters. ·If your waste service provider does not offer bear-resistant trash cans, you could purchase your own wildlife-resistant container or dumpster. Great first night out of bear season with @rexkwolf and @bigsky_ty. Spotted this guy right away after a snow blizzard stopped and the sun poked through the clouds. A very underestimated hike... several drainages, a few doubts, and about four hours later, we finally found an opening in the trees to set up for a shot. One whiffed opportunity on my part, with a follow up shot that found its mark and I notched my 2020 tag with my best bear to date. Hello, bear!! This wildlife camera photo of an Andean Bear was taken at Chingaza National Natural Park in Colombia. This protected area is up high in the Andes Mountains, but is only about two hours away from Bogotá, the biggest city in Colombia. SNRE PhD student @imauriciovela studies the spatial ecology and occupancy patterns of Andean bears inside and outside of protected areas in the Chingaza Massif. Mauro also studies the perceptions of rural communities towards Andean bears— an essential social component of conservation . . . The Chingaza protected area encompasses unique highland habitats, such as Andean cloud forest and Paramo. It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a...bear? . . Yes, this picture is fake, but did you know that black bears once roamed throughout Point Reyes? Turns out the “Bear Valley” was named that way for a reason. Even though black bears have not inhabited Marin County since the early 20th century, it’s still fun to imagine what life would be like with them here. It’s estimated that there were as many as 2 million American Black Bears before European colonization. Habitat destruction and hunting caused the population to decline to nearly 200,000. Today, black bears are commonly found in coniferous and deciduous forests ranging from Alaska, Canada, the US, and northern Mexico. Even though there are no populations of black bears in the park today, there have been rumored bear sightings in Point Reyes and Marin County since the 1970s. In 2003, a fur sample from a male black bear was left behind on a dumpster and tested for DNA. In 2010, tracks and scat were spotted in multiple spots in Point Reyes. And in 2018, two hikers stumbled across what they believe was bear scat on the side of Pierce Point Road. Locals theorize that every once in a while, bears swim down the Russian River, into Tomales Bay, and out onto the land to feed on Myrtle berries. Hey, I can’t blame them. Last month we GPS-collared two subadult cougars (C21 & C22) that weve been monitoring with their mother (C5) since last January. When we initially collared the mother our houndsman said she had 3 kittens but subsequent camera footage that we got only ever showed two at a time. Now 9 months later we can officially show that yes, indeed she has had 3 kittens all along because this family clearly takes turns at a kill and one very obviously is not collared! He seems like a healthy male, and now that these cats have left their mother to make their own kills we may only occasionally see him with his mother. . . . This morning in North Vancouver a black bear found itself trapped inside a vehicle. The bear (not pictured) was able to access the vehicle easily and gained a high calorie food reward once inside. Thankfully, the homeowners freed the bear, who then escaped to a nearby green space. Bears that cause property damage, eat unnatural foods or enter a confined space often pay with their lives. Bears are intelligent animals and they have great memories, especially when it concerns food rewards and where to find them. This weeks black bear death on I-65 demonstrates need for wildlife corridors and safe crossing designs. ⠀ ⠀ A black bear was killed by a motor vehicle Tuesday morning crossing I-65 south of Louisville. Black bear are rare in central Kentucky. This accident demonstrates the need to establish wildlife corridors with protected natural land to allow bear, bobcat and other animals to move safely about in their search for food, shelter, and mates. ⠀ ⠀ Highways and other congested roads designed and built with culverts, underpasses, and wildlife overpasses keep transportation infrastructure from being death traps for mammals, reptiles and other creatures. Over 6,000 motor vehicle collisions with animals reported in Kentucky in 2018/2019, resulted in 6 people killed and 24 seriously injured. Designing roadways and highways to accommodate wildlife movement will save money and lives. ⠀ ⠀ Bernheim is proud of our efforts to establish protected wildlife corridors. Un macho de nombre Capacho logro salirse de su recinto en la Isla de los Osos luego que una rama cayera sobre la cerca de electricidad desactivándola Capacho logro nadar a través de la fosa de seguridad y estuvo rondando el área, entretenido con la vegetación y marcando territorio. Al percatarse de la situación el personal de nuestro #parquebararida activo los procedimeintos de seguridad. Los cuidadores de animales y supervisores de Manejo y Salud Animal se abocaron a monitorear al oso e intentar atraerlo hacia su recinto mientras el personal de seguridad resguardaba el área y los médicos veterinarios preparaban el equipo necesario. El ejemplar en ningún momento salio del área ni de las instalaciones del zoológico. A las 11:20 am ya había sido capturado con el uso de anestesicos y retornado a los cubiles de su recinto con las respectivas medidas de seguridad. Este es un hecho aislado pues no había sucedido anteriormente. Esta situación responde más a la curiosidad del ejemplar que aprovechó la oportunidad, pues Capacho es alimentado adecuadamente y se encuentra en muy buena condición corporal, como pudo observarse en las numerosas imágenes y videos que fueron tomadas por los vecinos que presenciaron los hechos. Todo se resolvió satisfactoriamente sin daños para las personas ni para el animal que se encuentra sano, salvo y a buen resguardo. I had the pleasure of capturing the relationship between Little Girl and Ethan. Little Girl is a black bear cub with hydrocephalus, a condition where liquid builds up around the brain. Because of her condition, she is unable to perform many of the basic tasks necessary for survival in the wild. Lucky for Little Girl, she was rescued by the Kilham Bear Center in New Hampshire, a facility dedicated to rescuing abandoned black bear cubs and releasing them into the wild which they have been doing with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Dept. for 25 years. Due to her condition, she may be their first bear that is unable to be released into the wild, but that has not stopped Ethan from building a unique friendship with her. Everyday Ethan visits Little Girl and walks with her from her covered resting shed to an open outdoor area. With difficulty controlling her body, she often tumbles down and struggles to see all obstacles. More bears! Were excited to share this daytime footage of a young male black bear checking the surrounding area for scent, following close on the heels of a second bear. Black bears have an incredible sense of smell (about seven times more powerful than a bloodhound’s) and use scent to communicate with other bears. One way they leave scent behind is by using the scent glands on the bottom of their feet, stomping and twisting their feet into the ground as they walk. They may also bite, scratch and rub against designated bear marking trees. How do you identify a bear marking tree? They are generally young, fragrant trees whose tops have been bitten or snapped off. This afternoon, I fell in love with this sweet little angel of the wild. ‘Arlington’ was found wandering alone and having some difficulty walking. Our very caring Vermont game wardens brought her to Dr. Ben at the Kilham Bear Center and he diagnosed her as having been born with hydrocephalus (water on the brain). She would not have survived in the wild, but here she is taken care of and well loved.
