A lifelong advocate for racial equality and voting rights, he was part of the dwindling generation of Black civil rights leaders who participated in some of the most historic moments of the civil rights movement. Lewis joined the Freedom Rides that began in 1961, traveling to the segregated south by bus to fight segregation on interstate buses. His skull was fractured by state troopers on Bloody Sunday during the Selma to Montgomery march for civil rights in 1965. That incident, along with other beatings during peaceful protests, left him with physical scars for the rest of his life. He was the last surviving speaker from the 1963 March on Washington when he attended Barack Obama’s inauguration in January 2009. Obama presented Lewis with a commemorative photograph signed “Because of you, John. Barack Obama” and in 2011 he awarded Lewis the presidential medal of freedom. Even while ill earlier this year and unable to come to work on Capitol Hill, Lewis continued to speak out and expressed hope that the Black Lives Matter protests following the death of George Floyd would lead to real change. He said in early June that while he had “been down this road before” in seeing large-scale protests erupting against systemic racism, this time gave him hope. “As a nation, and as a people, we’re going to get there. The first of the 2020 presidential debates between President Trump and his opponent Joe Biden took place today, leaving the entire planet now contemplating their faith in the future of human civilisation. The death rattle of democracy featured a chaotic series of extremely personal exchanges and name-calling between the two nominees, as the collapse of late stage capitalism reared its ugly head for all to see. Throughout the 90 minute debate, Trump repeatedly spoke over his Democratic rival, leaving Biden with no choice but to tell The President to ‘shut up, man’ several times. The exhausted moderator, Chris Wallace of Fox News struggled to maintain control as he led the candidates to topics like the Supreme Court, the economy, the coronavirus pandemic and more. However despite such criticisms, the show remained popular until the end of it’s 26-year-run in in 2018. This album, with all the elements to become legendary, was difficult to acquire and because of that, it became a cult album for tango fans.
