A really wonderful thing happened the other day. I got a call from a woman in Wisconsin saying she saw my pictures online of her old friend and wanted to see if I could get her contact information so she could mail her a letter. Her friend I photographed was Sister Jeanne Morreall. She has been fostering children who have physical and developmental disabilities for about 30 years. The woman on the phone had been looking through old papers at her desk since shes been quarantined and found something about Sister Jeanne. She hadnt seen her in over 60 years - they were neighbors growing up in Rochester. It just so happens when she googled she found my photos from 2017 on my old website. I called Sister Jeanne and got a chance to catch up with her since I hadnt spoken to her in a while. I was happy to find out that her and her foster children were doing well during these unusual times. Silence is not acceptable. We can’t be ignorant and not talk about what is real. Racism is pure evil. The institutions created in America were started by whites, built by the blood, sweat and tears of blacks. Slavery was and remains pure evil. The system was created unfair and remains unfair. Education, banking, capitalism, housing, jobs, prosecution... people of color have always been at a disadvantage and the system is not going to change itself. We as individuals have to change the bloodlines of racism that still run so deep through our nation. We are called to love and respect everyone NO MATTER WHAT. And giving a fair shake to everyone no matter the color of their skin is what we all deserve. We can’t wait for the government to make changes. We hold the power to break the barriers of race that are entrenched in hate for others by acknowledging the oppressed and then standing up for them. We all have a voice and it should be heard. We all have a heart and it should be loved. We all have a platform and it should be used. All people are created by God and deserve our love, honor and respect. We will not stop speaking for those who’s voices fall silent and we will not stop standing for those who are powerless. Strong, connected and in tune with her body and bringing her baby earth side. Little Smurf as we first named him due to his little blue face☺️ was breathing well, he was happy and healthy. His little blue face faded and became the fresh newborn pinky colour within a few hours. . Due to a fast pushing stage he had a facial contusion. Birth is quite an experience for a baby’s body to go through even under the best of circumstances. The mother’s pelvic bones and muscles of the birth canal exert pressure on a newborn during labour and this sometimes causes breakage in the baby’s capillaries and venule’s, which form contusions or bruises. . Nivia’s puppies are 7 weeks old and full of life! These cuties will be ready to bring their love and adorable personalities to their forever homes in just one week! Four of the pups, Dandi, Andi, Mandi, and Randi are committed to adopters. So there are two females, Sandi and Brandi, that available for adoptable now. We are accepting applications, and they will be ready for homes in one week. Please note we always adhere to strict requirements for adopting puppies, and those are listed here. Our adoption criteria for pups: 1 - Husky experience required. Huskies are smart, stubborn, independent and destructive. And they are unique. 2 - The adoptive family must have an adult at home most of the time - ideally a stay-at-home or work from-home person. While we believe in kennel training, at this age a pup cannot be left more than a couple of hours at a time, and as she grows she will have even more need for stimulation - exercise, training and play. 3 - No cats. Some pups can learn to live with other species, but some cannot. At this age we are unable to safely assess prey drive. 4 - Ideally the adoptive family will have another balanced and active large breed dog - for play and learning. 5 - Commitment to training. Even experienced husky families need the support of group or individual training classes with a very young pup. 6 - Minimum adoption age 25. In 2014, @natgeo photographer Ami Vitale witnessed Samburu warriors from Sera in northern Kenya encounter rhinos for the first time on a visit to @lewa_wildlife. These animals had once been a common sight in the semi-arid region, but the last ones were killed by poachers about 25 years ago. Today, thanks to relocation efforts by the community and conservationists, they are once again roaming the vast rangelands of the Samburu people. Organisations behind the effort included the governmental @kenyawildlifeservice and nonprofits, @nrt_kenya and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. The animals’ new home, Sera Community Conservancy, is locally owned and operated by the Samburu. To deter poachers, the rhinos are watched over around the clock by the park’s community rangers, who receive support from the project’s other partners. “This was the first time in East Africa [that] a local community took responsibility for the protection and management of the highly threatened black rhino, signaling a mind shift in Kenya’s conservation efforts,” the Northern Rangelands Trust wrote on its website at the time. Vitale added: “Many Kenyans have never seen a live rhino. Some of the warriors thought they would have spots and others thought their horn would be flexible, like an elephant’s trunk.” It is hard to imagine the sense of wonder these men must have felt that day five years ago, as they gently lay their hands on this most beautiful of creatures. 🏆Quitting is for winners! I had to quit so many times to get to a place of knowing my purpose, loving what I do and having a more fulfilling career. I’ve had a career as a secondary school maths teacher, an auditor, a fitness instructor and an entrepreneur all in less than a decade. From a Maths degree, PGCE teaching qualification, ACA chartered accountant to PT and fitness instructor. My CV looks mad! But I never quit because it got too hard. I quit because deep down I knew my personal value was more than working myself sick, more than a title, status or pay check. I knew my purpose was bigger than just me- I just needed to let it happen. On paper I was successful but deep down it either wasn’t sustainable for my health (teaching- even though this was one of my FAVOURITE jobs I definitely worked myself sick) or didn’t serve any of my values (auditing). I’m not saying quitting was ever easy. I briefly had to say goodbye to stability, good money and nice holidays and say hello to starting from the bottom again, a knock to my pride, big risks of failing and my mum shaking her head at me because she no longer had ‘my daughter is an accountant’ bragging rights lolz. But it was definitely worth it! It’s still a work in progress but that will never stop. Life’s a journey with multiple destinations which we move through, rather than end at. Work is a huge part of that journey and second to sleep it’s where we spend most of our time- I choose to make it a fulfilling time and I am willing to quit as many times as I need to in order to get there. #flashbackfriday - @itskimngo on Instagram

A supporter of Martin Fayulu, leader of an opposition party, runs from police tear gas in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), on 19 December 2018. Long-delayed general elections to find a successor to President Joseph Kabila in the DRC, were finally held on 30 December 2018. The run-up was marked by protests, street rallies, and clashes between opposition supporters and police. Elections had been repeatedly postponed since President Kabila’s mandate expired in 2016. The election was won by Felix Tshisekedi, leader of the UDPS, DRC’s largest opposition party. The result was disputed by rival parties, but welcomed internationally as the first peaceful transfer of power since Congo’s independence in 1960. The image by John Wessels (@johngingerwessels), Agence France-Presse was awarded second prize in the ‘General news, stories’ category of the 2019 World Press Photo Contest, and is part of the special exhibition ‘People, Power: Documenting protest since 1957.’ In collaboration with @UNESCO, @unesconow and @minbz, the exhibition presents images that have become global symbols of people power and celebrates the work of professional photographers who are showing us the stories that matter. Joining Youthlinc was the best decision I have ever made. Before my first trip I knew I wanted to do some sort of humanitarian trip, but struggled to find one that wouldn’t be a “vacation”. Then I discovered Youthlinc and start my growth in humanitarianism. Local service has probably been the most impactful part. It was really scary to get started, but once I got into it, everything was fine. Now I have a Main Service Site that I’ll continue to volunteer at even when my Youthlinc days are over. But I wouldn’t of ever started there if it wasn’t for Youthlinc! Youthlinc is the best! If you want to go make a difference read into Youthlinc and start doing some local service! WOMENS (BIKE) HISTORY: 3 DAYS, 5 WOMEN, 250 MILES #TBT by Carolyn Szczepanski Decades before AIDS Rides, Critical Mass, Tweed Rides and more, five women embarked on a group ride from New York City to Washington, D.C. during Easter weekend in 1928. Yes, 1928! These five New Yorkers — Marylou Jackson, Velma Jackson, Ethyl Miller, Leolya Nelson and Constance White — biked 250 miles over three days. On the first day of their ride, they biked 110 miles to Philadelphia. The second day, they biked 40 miles to Wilmington, Delaware. The third and final day, they biked more than 100 miles, arriving in Washington, D.C. around 9pm. Once in D.C., they did some sightseeing around the National Mall and @howard1867. They also took time to have the above photograph taken. I love how they sit so confidently on their bicycles, resplendent in their leather jackets, caps, bloomers and stylish socks. When asked what motivated them to embark on the group ride, they responded that they were motivated by “the love of the great-out-of-doors” that each of them cherished. Interestingly, they also challenged other young women, 21 years old and older, to replicate their trip in less time. What are we to make of this challenge, the professed love for “outdoor” culture and the trip, in general? And what was happening in 1928 that provides a context for the ride? Today would have been my moms birthday. Every year it comes like a sucker punch 🥊 to my gut. As I was looking over photos of her last night I realized what a testament her entire life was to the power of human will. From being told she would never walk, to the countless “you have one week/month/ days to life” or the suggested pre- surgery good byes by the doctors. The photos I have of my mom are filled with celebration, they are filled with accomplishment and triumphs, they are the ultimate 🖕🏼 to words such as “can’t” or “shouldn’t”. I used to look at these photos and think of the pain and suffering that accompanied her entire life. But now my minds lens has seemingly refocused to see the celebration in every step she took, to welcoming anyone who needed care into our home, to making it all the way to Colorado to hug me after graduation, to opening her eyes after yet another surgery, to planning unnecessarily large parties to raise money for charities and schools. She was stubborn, she was driven, and she was one hell of a spirit. I am blessed to have shared in her incredible life... and even more grateful to continue to celebrate that life every day of my own.
