You know what I mean? . . . The UK govt spent our too-little-too-late coronavirus lockdown spreading damaging propaganda about our NHS workers being ‘heroes’ to excuse them from protecting them properly or paying them properly. They spread the narrative that heroes act selflessly for a greater good and don’t expect compensation, the usual Tory lies, trying to obscure the fact that they are people doing an already difficult job in an impossible circumstance thanks to the weakness of government. They have us clapping on doorsteps one week then selling off the health service the next, denying pay rises to public and private sector health workers while trying to blame them for the excessive deaths. Pay the nurses properly for god’s sake, we’re an international embarrassment. . . . . I thought about this hoop for ages before I made it, hoping naively I wouldn’t feel compelled to any more. This isn’t just about the corruption of the UK this represents the disgusting actions of police in America. Defund them. Black Lives Matter. This is a fuck you to JKR, an author I admired from the age of 8, trans women are women and trans men are men and I will never ever again idolise a public figure because you never know the dark depths of bigotry in people’s hearts. I will make more hoops like this and will donate a % of all future sales to charitable associations. So, have you seen the Inside Missguided documentary series on Channel 4 yet? It’s pure femwashing, only catering to white feminism. In case you missed it I recommend reading @sophiebenson article for Dazed instead of wasting your time “On Inside Missguided, ‘girlboss’ culture masks the reality of fast fashion” which says it all. Swipe for some quotes. . Femwashing: when companies use marketing to capitalise in women’s rights and equality. Similar to greenwashing where an organisation presents an image to heighten environmental awareness, or pinkwashing where companies present themselves to be LGBT+ friendly or progressive, femwashing uses messaging of women’s rights for capitalistic gains. It sells “freedom” and “equality” as capitalistic forms of liberation, and at its core, it is profiting off the patriarchy. Source - urban dictionary. . White feminism: used to describe feminist theories that focus on the struggles of white women without addressing distinct forms of oppression faced by ethnic minority women and women lacking other privileges. . Fast fashion is a feminist issue and in this doc which boasts an empowering workplace with women “running the show” (despite holding few leadership positions which are all taken by men), they completely forget to talk about their garment workers - except when haggling for prices. . The girls or”badass bitches” / “boss babes” like “drinking pints, swearing and getting their tits out”. That’s great but this is a huge missed opportunity for women to show true solidarity with those making our clothes. Who can’t boast those same privileges. . We all remember the @missguided £1 bikini right? . What’s your take on this? For me it’s short-sighted, problematic and a missed opportunity to say the least. Not that I’m surprised. .
