Embracing joy this year has been challenging...First it was accepting a surprise pregnancy. Then it was the constraints a global pandemic on seeing our family and the ways going to the doctor changed. Then it was witnessing the world shift itâs focus to social injustice and not wanting to celebrate anything good, because it felt insignificant to how badly others are suffering and how privileged I am in it all. Then it was keeping our company alive while feeling the weight of responsibility on my shoulders. And now the west coast is burning. A historical election is underway. There are sickening acts of trafficking and border policing and all of these headlines, so how could bringing another human into this world possibly be a good thing...and then I feel a kick from the baby Iâve been growing in my womb for #40weeks. And I remember that it doesnât need to be important to everyone, but it is important to me. Stifling my joy hurts the way I am able to impact the world for good, on a day to day basis- which is the only way we can make a change. In our circles, with our families, and the tiny humans we raise. I am so joyful that this was the year God chose for me to become a mother. Chest breath vs belly breath? Whats really the difference? I figured a little visual demonstration would be best to show you how much more air your lungs actually take in when you breathe into your stomach and use your diaphragm to assist you compared to puffing your chest out when you take a deep breath. More air, means more oxygen. More oxygen makes EVERYTHING in your body better. Digestion, thoughts, stress, heart function, etc. Every single cell needs oxygen to survive...just like you. Every single reaction in your body needs oxygen for it to function as it should. More oxygen in the tank also means more endurance, less fatigue, faster recovery, etc. So breathing like this is also very important when training and/pr competing. ðª As well, the movement created by your lungs expanding that much more also makes all the organs in your body move up and down...they need that movement to work correctly. I always say that more movement is better...doesnt only apply to your muscles and bones! Note that Im 20+ weeks pregnant on this video so just imagine how much more air would go into lungs that actually could inflate all the way when you took a breath!! And as and added bonus ð°, Im even showing you a quick diaphragm reset to make sure there isnt any tension in it so you can benefit to the max with every breath you take! I drew circles on the balloon to show the difference in size with a chest breath vs a belly breath. Because seeing is believing right?! ð Want to get more air in those lungs? Before one of my miscarriages last year I had intense and frightening anxiety. I am not a person who usually suffers from anxiety, so the feelings I had were unexpected and completely overwhelming.⣠⣠That day, I drove over to my grandparents house seeking help and comfort. I laid in their bed and sobbed on my Nonnyâs lap while she rubbed my back. I lamented to her and my grandfather that I felt I would die in childbirth. As they prayed over me and the baby in my womb, the feeling wouldnât leave. ⣠⣠A week or so later, I was back at their house actively miscarrying. Waiting for my mom to pick me up and take me to the hospital due to extreme pain, I couldnât help but feel guilty for praying âthank you God for saving me.â Weird right?? But I was thanking Him for saving me from anxiety for 9 months, I was thanking him for answering prayer and providing relief, even if that relief wasnât what Iâd imagined it to be. I learned that day that Godâs solutions donât always look like ours, but His solutions are just, perfectly timed and for our good. ⣠⣠After having had 3 miscarriages now, Iâve learned valuable lessons from each one. I wouldnât go back and change anything. Without my first miscarriage, we wouldnât have had JT and I wouldnât have learned Godâs timing is perfect, always. Without my 2nd miscarriage, I wouldnât have truly understood that Godâs plan is better than mine and without my 3rd, Iâd still feel entitled to childbearing and not understand it for the blessing it truly is. ⣠⣠Miscarriages have taught me to intentionally extract Godâs perspective from any difficult season in my life. TRANSITION Defined as the final stage of established labour, where the body is making the transition from the opening of the cervix to the baby moving down the birth path to be born. Not defined by numbers or times or centimeters, but more by your body language, behaviours and sounds! Common phrases heard during transition: ⢠âI canât do this anymore!â ⢠âGive me an epidural!â ⢠âI want to go home!â ⢠âIâm dying!â The intensity and overwhelm is REAL! During transition, and in the final stages of labour, your body produces a huge surge of adrenaline to literally carry you over the finish line (much like marathon runners in the final 100m of their race!). It is an evolutionary function to get you through, but can result in total restlessness, intensity and feelings of loss of control. We get excited by transition as midwives as it means your baby is nearly here! But itâs pretty bloominâ intense for those going through it - although it doesnât last long. Top tips for transition (get your birth partner to remember these!): ⢠Rest ⢠Position changes ⢠Hydration ⢠Words of encouragement - you CAN do this! ⢠Change your breathing to downwards (aka âdownâ breathing) ⢠Try touch, massage (may be too intense for some women) ⢠KEEP GOING! - youâre SO nearly there! Querida barriga, Todo final tem um começo. Parece uma afirmaçaÌo banal, mas nada banal se tratando de voceÌ. Logo que descobri que estava graÌvida, eu jaÌ notava que voceÌ estava diferente! Eu ateÌ vestia minhas calças jeans que eu amo e o botaÌo fechava numa boa, mas eu jaÌ conseguia te ver diferente. Com voceÌ, chegaram as diferenças no quadril, no estado de humor, na vontade de dormir e na fome incontrolaÌvel! VoceÌ nem tinha ainda quase começado a crescer, era talvez algum inchaço, uma bobagem de diferença, mas trazia uma mudança gigantesca para a minha vida. AteÌ que de fato voceÌ daÌ o ar da graça e eÌ inevitaÌvelâŠ, saÌo tantas duÌvidas e medos. SeraÌ mesmo que eÌ possiÌvel ter algueÌm aiÌ dentro de voceÌ? Quem eÌ esse ser taÌo minuÌsculo mas que jaÌ considero pacas? ð€£Que inveja de voceÌ minha querida barriga, que abriga esse mini peixinho desde os primoÌrdios⊠uma simples barriga? Ou⊠praticamente o fundo do mar? Eu tentei te disfarçar as vezes, mas logo notei que era em vaÌo. VoceÌ parecia maior. Ficavam te comparando a outras barrigas. Minha estatura naÌo ajuda neÌ? Cada vez maior pra mim, mas laÌ dentro imagino jaÌ naÌo estar taÌo grande assim. Seu ocupante estaÌ muito grande, um toco, mas grande. Must admit, when I first heard there was such a thing as maternity panties I was a bit dubious - could they be much different than regular panties? I stand converted - very, very converted ð @mamanoonursingwear sent me a couple of their high waisted knickers to try out, and basically I canât get them through the wash fast enough after wearing. Theyâre deliciously soft and comfortable, and so much more supportive and secure than my non-maternity knickers. They donât dig in, roll down or bunch up under your growing bump, which was driving me mad! Plus they look pretty darn cute too! Theyâre available up to a XXL - which fits me perfectly, and Iâm usually a size 20. After laboring for 52 hours, I reached the point where I knew a decision had to be made and it was a decision that no one else could make for me. There was no way she would have come naturally. The nurses in the OR commented that I was so relaxed - my breathing and heart rate were so steady. Itâs true â I felt immense peace in my decision. She was born 9lbs 3oz with a head full of hair and a healthy cry. OB went well. Staff is super nice and it wasnt stressful because of covid . Beau is doing well. Strong heart â€ïž beat My OB joked saying a boys heart beat like the tale tells . No indication that he will come early my OB said he would be surprised if he comes before 40 weeks . I am doing well too no concerns and my blood pressure is good . Apparently I do pregnancy well so thats good haha ð All goes well we are in the hospital 24 hours . Yes mike is allowed to be with me for those who are curious. Once hes with me he has to stay in the hospital.
