Blanc 2015 from Prieuré Roch (co-owner of the DRC) is an...orange wine made from Chardonnay. After opening, it requires some oxygenation to reveal a nice complexity after a rather dull bit pleasant cider feel at the very start. If you enjoy this type of wine, it’s a good example but do not expect to drink a Gravner or so. Persephone’s back 〰️ ➿➰ This year’s wines are labeled and ready to find their way to lovers of natural wine. In a tiny shed on a hill above the veggie patch and Pinot vineyard, using a manual basket press and some barrels and clay vessels, I fermented Chardonnay, Gamay, Sangiovese, and Cabernet Franc, as well as a Merlot-Semillon blend called “Cuvée Simone” and two sparklings — Chardonnay with Semillon pressed over Gamay skins; and a Sparkling Shiraz (an Australian Christmas classic made by an American Jew, why not). I’m humbled and honored to make wine and thankful for the help of @lucymargauxwines @chateaucommecicommeca who drive tractors, haul grapes, pressure wash barrels, operate the bottler, and so much more. This year’s wines would not have been made without @lailamaghathe and @stfnnlsn — two people very special to me, and my star basket press duo/part-time babysitters, whose energy is in every bottle. Thanks as well to @jaschaboyce @jorendawson @katsuwins @gio_paradiso @oriol.artigas @erica.bemo for muscle and energy, and to the vineyard owners and Sam and his picking crew. Furmint: there is so much to tell about this delicate grape variety! It is the perfect companion for Asian food, as well as for fine flavors or Austrian home cooking style (like the Wiener Schnitzel). We have been working and living with the Furmint since the 80s and have learned a lot about it since then. We vinify the Furmint in all variations: dry, sweet, orange, unfiltered, unsulphured. Now we are waiting for the new „Furmint aus dem Quarz 2019“, hopefully we can bottle it in early May! Temos vigneronne!!! A Aline instalou-se na aldeia Uva de onde são originários os seus pais, para se dedicar a reconstruir um património de vinhas velhas localizadas em solos aluviais ou de xisto, a 550m de altitude e fazer vinhos que reflitam a identidade do local de origem, com uma viticultura e vinificação naturais e artesanais.  Branco - Líquen 2019, Uvas próprias, 60% Malvasia, 40% de castas tradicionais antigas (Bastardo Branco e Formosa essencialmente). 5 parcelas localizadas em Uva e aldeias vizinhas em solos de xisto. As uvas foram pisadas a pé e prensadas. Depois de uma ligeira passagem ao limpo, o mosto fermentou e estagiou em cuba de inox durante 8 meses. Tinto de maceração - Ciste 2019 Parte de uvas próprias, parte de uvas de viticultores locais. 70% Uvas tintas (Negreda e bastardo preta essencialmente) e 30% brancas (Malvasia essencialmente, mas também bastardo branco, moscatel roxo). 2 parcelas a 10km de Uva, solos aluviais. Maceração carbónica de 4 dias de bago inteiro, seguida duma fermentação e ligeira extração. Estágio de 8 meses em cuba inox 80% e 20% em barricas usadas. Tinto de extração - Palomba 2019 Uvas próprias tintas, 80% negreda, 20% outras castas tradicionais (uva de rei, moscatel preta, moscatel roxo etc.). 5 parcelas localizadas em Uva e aldeias vizinhas em solos de xisto. As uvas foram desengaçadas à mão em 30%, e incubadas. Yesterday we did a tasting of German Kabinett and Spatlese @mothervinewinebar where we also included the Rieslingfreak No.8. The wines were tasted by 12 Somms/wine people, no one could pick the Aussie Riesling in the line up. Celebrity wines have been quite controversial in recent years. From Jay-Z, Isaiah Thomas, Snoop Dogg, Cameron Diaz’, Dewayne Wade, 50 Cent, Madonna, Jeff Gordon, Fergie, and recently Mary J. Blige’, the list goes on and on . Articles on these creations/partnerships have run the gamut from praise, to tepid, to quite critical of quality and more importantly purpose, as wine has traditionally been seen as an intense labor of love between man/woman and the land. . The approach I will be taking centers on the integrity of the grape; in essence, does the wine fairly represent the characteristics of the varietal it claims to? . So, in consideration of that approach today’s tasting menu will focus on Invivo X by Sarah Jessica Parker @invivoxsjp. Best known for her leading character “Carrie Bradshaw” of the HBO series and movies “Sex and the City”; now she, and actor husband Matthew Broderick (Ferris Bueller) have added winemaker to their resumes (there is also a Rose). . First, the varietal; a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Wine from an iconic region in New Zealand with unique terroir that consists of a sunny dry climate and well draining stony soil. Known for showing notes of bell pepper, cut grass as well as tropical fruit and a refreshing mineral finish. . Does Invivo X measure up??? In short, yes! I will admit in the beginning I was more than skeptical, I mean another celebrity wine really? However, I must say that this was a pleasant surprise and I am glad to have tried this drop! It opens true to Sauvignon Blanc form, with aromas of cut grass, bell pepper, passion fruit, citrus zest and an interesting light sweetness reminiscent of a green apple candy apple. The palate shows a slightly higher but balanced acidity, with tasty citrus zest and lemongrass overtones. It is refreshing with pleasant minerality and long finish. I believe that overall Invivo X is a good representation of a Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough region! . Along with this cool wine Im relaxing to the classic sounds of Autumn in New York by Charlie Parker. As for our part in this production... we present to you: . The Black Lime Fizz . Not a fizz in the egg white (Ramos Fizz, Gin Fizz) sense... or, even the old soda shoppe extra fizz-y (Lime Rickey) sense... but, in a kinda nitro sorta sense. See, we add a solid dry gin, the @burlybeverages Black Lime-Bay Leaf Shrub Syrup, @cardamaro aperitif wine, Moroccan Mint Tea & fresh meyer lemon juice to a 5 gallon soda keg and then infuse it with nitrogen (sorta like Guinness). This helps preserve the freshness, but also adds a creamy kinda mouth feel. . You get two cocktails in each 16oz bottle. This one can be enjoyed one of two ways. 1) Fill a pint glass all the way with ice, you can pour half of the bottle (one cup) into the glass till its full. Thisll feel more like a creamy daisy or margarita style. 2) Fill a pint glass 2/3 of the way with ice, then add half of the bottle (one cup) into the glass. Then, top wth your favorite sparkling water, dry champagne, dry prosecco or light beer. We like it with @lacroixwater Limoncello flavored seltzer. Thisll be lighter and feel more like a spritz or a shandy. . This, two serving bottle, also comes along with two cardamom & mint infused dried lime wheels and four @haystraws. Place the garnish on top on of the cocktail and stick the straws in as close to the garnish as possible so that you can smell it while you are drinking the cocktail. . Pro-Tip - if you happen to have fresh mint around, put a sprig behind the lime wheel. And, if you happen to have green cardamom seeds around, roughly grind or smash one seed and sprinkle onto the lime wheel. . Phew! That was A LOT. Vosne Romanée Beaumonts Henri Jayer 1988 Je confie ne pas bien connaitre les vins d’Henri Jayer, l’une des figures incontournables de la Côte de Nuits. Ceci s’explique bien sûr par la raréfaction des bouteilles - le dernier millésime fut 2001 - mais aussi par des prix en vente aux enchères qui atteignent des sommets que peu peuvent s’offrir. Remettons en perspective le « pâte Jayer ». Reconnu comme un viticulteur exemplaire, il avait pour habitude d’égrapper tous ses vins, et de les élever minutieusement en fût neuf, afin d’avoir les bois les plus respectueux de la matière et non pour aromatiser. Nous sommes loin des codes que nous avons aujourd’hui en Bourgogne. Cerclé par les Brulées et Suchots, Beaumonts fait partie des premiers crus qui tutoie les grands, grâce à une expression pleine de panache, et à une délicatesse enveloppante. 1988, millésime bâti sur la fraicheur, est aujourd’hui un vin accompli. Lorsque je croise le chemin de bouteille de ce pedigree, mes sens sont en éveil. J’ai envie d’en saisir tous les contours et savoir si le flacon est à la hauteur de la réputation. A l’ouverture, les vins bourguignons des années 1980 ne sont pas toujours les plus évidents, avec des notes légèrement animales. Mais assez rapidement, percent avec élégance des fragrances de petites baies rouges, de fleurs séchées et de bois précieux. Mais ce qui interpelle vraiment, c’est le touché, charnel, sensuel, où le tanin patiné par le temps offre une caresse délicieuse. Son énergie apporte beaucoup d’élan à l’ensemble, donnant une longueur rare. J’aurais adoré rencontrer ce vigneron, dont la légende s’est fondé tant sur les vins que sur les qualités humaines du personnage. Mais son oeuvre parle pour lui aujourd’hui. Nous avons l’habitude ou coutume de clôturer une soirée avec un pet nat. D’habitude, il viendrait plutôt de la Loire, et parfois du Jura. On nous a proposé un pet nat de Savoie et nous avons sauté sur l’occasion. On trempe les lèvres, la bulle est tellement active que notre langue est plongée dans une mer de bulles, et hop, la pomme fraîche ensuite. Meet one of my latest favorite winemakers I was introduced to while working on the @wonderwomenofwine conference (recently postponed): Adrienne Ballou of @southold_farm_and_cellar and @lightsome_wines label.  Shortly after tasting her bubbles at a fundraiser, I picked these up from the Twin Liquors on South Lamar.  These are sledgehammer wines— bottles that cooly strike down misconceptions surrounding the quality of Texas grapes.  I’ll admit, it uncharacteristically took me hours to finish them on my own not because they weren’t gluggable, but because I didn’t want to run out.  Wild, expressive, and rare, I challenge anyone who hasn’t had their ‘aha’ moment with Texas wine to experience any of these dynamic, low-intervention wins. The west is on fire. The first map shows active fires as of tonight. The second map shows USDA data from 2017 on vegetables harvested for sale. Each dot represents 1,000 acres, with the largest concentrations of dots being on the west coast. Toggle back and forth and take a moment to think about where your food is coming from and the farmers who grew it. Think about how far the smoke plumes travel, and how conditions for farmers can be extraordinarily unhealthy (the paler shaded area of the first map shows smoke zones) and they cant simply stay indoors or take the day off. Our crew here in western WA has been staying safe, but the conditions can still be difficult to work in. Not to mention, the pandemic hasnt gone anywhere! The 2019 releases of @floralterranes are all bottled and ready for release soon. These wines and ciders are really special to me for a number of reasons but most importantly because @juliesoltz had our son Wyeth on August 29th; three months early at the very start of the 2019 harvest. He spent August through the end of December in the NICU at New York Presbyterian while I raced back and forth from the hospital everyday to see him and harvest. Benford and I worked so hard to make it happen. We scrapped, fought, bled and laughed and every waking moment my mind was on our baby. Everyday we put our heads down, worked, pushed and produced some magic. Despite the hardships of a having a newborn, all you need is wife like Julie and the community who supports us; this it wouldn’t have happened if that weren’t so. If there is one thing I can be grateful for on my birthday is having a loving wife, family, a child and everyone who has helped us along the way. Without those, we wouldn’t be here. hand-labelled On your marks: my dear wife & team helped me to “label” all the Transcendent bottles last week. Therefore, following the recent preview for all audiences, I declare it’s finally officially available now. It’s a rosé, but, knowing me, you rightly suspect there’s a twist: direct press Regent, added to an open vat with Neuburger and Riesling fermenting on skins. Neuburger brings richness, Riesling the zing and Regent the right savage touch. All grapes from the Slovenské vineyard, so a true field blend. Each vintage, I only made one barrel like this: first time in 2017, then in 2018 and 2019. No sulfur of c. Also no topping up, so the 17 and 18 developed some flor which gives the wine a slight nutty note; together with the long, bright acidity, it tastes almost like an untamed, layered white, despite its vivid cherry-like colour. Pour la petite histoire… Dans les Vosges, au sud de Colmar, Bruno et son père Gérard Schueller travaillent six hectares de vignes. Extrêmement natures de la vigne à la cave, les vins des Schueller sont produits exempts de manipulations inutiles. Bruno comme son père prennent le soin de cueillir des raisins très sains et parfaitement matures; ils se permettent de jouer le jeu de la pureté afin de proposer des vins qui expriment magnifiquement leurs terroirs. Ils travaillent la vigne et signent leurs vins afin d’offrir des vins porteurs d’une double signature, celle du terroir et celle du vigneron. Les Schueller ont une immense réputation en France de telle sorte qu’il n’y a pratiquement jamais de bouteilles à vendre. Nous retrouvons leurs vins sur les belles tables françaises, dans les grandes caves parisiennes, mais également au Japon où on est extrêmement friands de ces types de vins. Oh. Snap. Weve got a lot of great beer to let you know about, but this is all that matters right now... Coolship Red from @allagashbrewing is now in stock. Weve seen a very limited amount of kegs of this in NC, but never bottles, and we couldnt be more excited. Coolship Red is a spontaneously fermented beer aged on fresh, local raspberries. The beer gets its yeast from the Maine air as it rests overnight in their coolship—a brewing vessel that basically looks like a really big brownie pan. The beer then ferments and ages for up to two years in oak barrels before adding raspberries, and aging for an additional six months. The end result is tart, raspberry-forward, and complex (to say the least).  No limit! - @tastybev_dtr on Instagram

We have long been fascinated by the Champagne region for positive (and negative) reasons. This feeling has evolved along the years and we became very inspired to see farmers fighting for a change in a region where there is still a lot of social pressure to not change things, and still nowadays it is the norm to farm using many chemicals. There is a new generation that truly plays against the established order and wants to redefine what Champagne means to them. They are bringing life back to the vineyards by promoting agroforestry approaches, as well as working with animals but also letting their intuition dictate their decisions in the cellar. Good Sitter - Blonde Biere de Garde - 6.4% ABV⁣ ⁣ We will release ‘Good Sitter’ our Blonde Biere de Garde to full distribution beginning next Tuesday September 1st. Follow the link in our bio to order you bottles for delivery right to your door (Chicago only) on Friday September 4th.⁣ ⁣ ‘Good Sitter’ is a Blonde Biere de Garde inspired by a trip I took to Au Baron, an French farmhouse brewery located on the Blegian border. I wanted to capture the feeling I had drinking Cuvée de Jonquilles in their bucolic french restaurant and bring it back to Chicago so I could share it with you.⁣ ⁣ To do this we sourced raw spelt berries from our at @janiesmill in Ashkum an hour and a half south of the city. We blended these with floor malted bohemian pilsner malt and hopped the resulting wort with Bramling Cross hops from the UK. The goal in brewing this wort was to create a beautiful base for the real star of this show, fermentation.⁣ ⁣ We fermented ‘Good Sitter’ hot with our saison yeast. This process is more traditional to how Biere de Garde was originally produced as opposed to the cold fermented amber lager it has morphed into over time. After this hot fermentation we garded ‘Good Sitter’ until it displayed the refined yet complex character we were after. In French ‘garde’ means ‘keep’ and it is a process of extended cold maturation. ⁣ ⁣ The result is a delicate melange of pear, ripe banana, black raspberry, lemon rind, black peppercorn, plum, hearty country bread, and black currant with a full body that belies its lean and satisfying finish.⁣ ⁣ ‘Good Sitter’ has already become a personal favorite of ours and we hope you grow to love it as much as we do.⁣ ⁣ Beautiful artwork by @shemovesinthefirelight ⁣ ⁣ Cheers,⁣ is/was⁣ - @iswasbrewing on Instagram

This batch Is so deep—purple and red fruit notes of raspberry, black plum, and red currant, with some winey, leather, tobacco, and wet earthy oak notes. Some cocoa nib and light roasted new-school coffee vibes too. This is a great one to expand your mind and pallet with. There is no wrong time of year to imbibe Lambrusco. Seriously. I am thankful that most wine (and beer) consumers have looked well-past the stereotype of Lambrusco being a cheap, sweet fizzy wine. In fact, the world of Lambrusco is so diverse, the US has not even scratched the surface. There are so many different types of Lambrusco grapes in Emilia, Italy, but we most commonly see the Grasparossa and Sorbara clones in our market. The wines work so amazingly on the dinner table (and lunch, brunch and breakfast tables too) but especially go well with salty and smoky foods like charcuterie and cheese and red sauce pizza. The commentator noted drink young as it contains no preservatives. Little did they know that not only do our unfiltered and preservative free wines age well, they thrive and are ALIVE!!!! New Release! We are delighted to present ‘Future Illusion’ from the 2019 vintage! 🍇 . Using organic Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes from the Gimblett Gravels, Hawke’s Bay - normally used to make dark reds; Future Illusion is a deceptively light Cab Sauv/Merlot Rosé. 😍 . A mixture of 12-24hr skin contact, then pressed to clay egg amphora, with a portion of grapes kept as whole berries to go through carbonic maceration for five days. Finally pressed and added to the amphora to finish ferment and age. 🏺 . The resulting wine is light red, has beautiful tart red berries, plum, habanero, crunchy tannin, and a refreshing minerality and brisk acidity. Unfined, unfiltered, and available right now in NZ and Australia. ❤️ . Our little love letter to the wines of Eric Pfifferling and L’Anglore. Best drunk chilled and shared with friends - cheers! 🍷 .
