Kind lil photoart I made inspired by ‘august’, track 8 of Taylor’s Swift surprise album, folklore. I’ve seen a lot of people, specifically major music critics, sharing how extremely different this release has been from her other music, and how she’s entering territory she’s never navigated before--ya know the usual experimentative pitch that writers love to milk (ME included tbh). I think that it’s important to note though, that all of the themes and elements personified by Swift are nothing she hasn’t already dipped her toes in. They might not have been explicitly highlighted through single releases that we’ve heard before, or accompanied by publicly-acclaimed major video releases, but the Swift we remember from ‘Speak Now’ or ‘Red’ is the same girl we hear in‘folkore’--but with a stroke of maturity and soberness. Deep cuts like ‘Daylight’, ‘New Year’s Day’, ‘This Love’ seem to foreshadow the new era with their meditative, soft ballads and embrace Swift’s raspy vocalization, but they don’t completely stand in solidarity with folklore. Folklore is entirely new yet nostalgic. A kind familiarity of the young, honest girl we remember from our youth with quick wit, but we’ve both grown up. I’ve been trying to find the time to really invest in a detailed, meaningful album review, but unfortunately my fellow journalism minor folks know that time is fleeting and we’ve gotta go viral before next week so there’s really no time.
