Lemurs in Madagascar: How Observing Them Can Save Them
27•07•2020 Yesterday I received an amazing gift, I finally saw an Adult male Orca. They are impressive and majestic animals. Look at their size compared to the boat, they are beautiful and enormous. Did you know that males are larger than females, and adult males are distinguishable (sexually dimorphic) by the increased size of their dorsal fin at sexual maturity (about 25 years). Male orcas usually grow to an average of 20-26 feet (6-8 m) and weigh 12,000 lb or more (5,400 kg). Male orcas become fully sexually mature at age 25. Between ages 12 and 15, their dorsal fin begins to grow taller and straighter, indicating the onset of sexual maturity. Male orcas typically don’t mate until after the age of 20. Males in the wild live 29 years on average, to a maximum of 50–60 years. A captive orcas lifespan is typically much shorter, often by 25 years or more. Don’t attend or support shows that keep animals in captivity. It is horrible to be locked up. 🖤🤍🖤🐼🖤🤍🖤 Ayer tuve el regalo de conocer un macho adulto orca, son impresionantes y majestuosos. One harvest down one to go, took a break and had an awesome solo adventure off the coast of Santa Barbara, I saw some dolphins, an island fox, and a bunch of harbor seals, enjoyed a kayak tour around Santa Cruz island with the best tour guide around, (Ricardo), went in some sea caves, and topped it off with a short hike. Mientras nos acercábamos por detrás de las ballenas cuando salían a respirar, sin querer mi amigo Bernardo, quien manejaba diestramente el zodiak en Alaska para que yo pudiera fotografiar la cola al hundirse, se acercó demasiado cuando emergió, lo que provocó una reacción de un gran coletazo de advertencia a escasos metros. La violencia y el estruendo fue algo indescriptible. Some encounters stay with you forever. 10 meters deep I held my breath knowing he was around somewhere. Id seen him on previous dives and recognised his crooked dorsal. Six degree water, waiting hoping I held my depth. Then he moved in, mouth open mouth closed mouth open. Closer and closer he came eventually brushing past me. Like he had to know who?. A curious Orca and weird aquatic alien. A moment so surreal I move my camera way from my mask and continued to shoot from my chest. I had to be present and respectful. The newest Southern Resident orca, just a few weeks old, has been confirmed to be a BOY. According to reports, baby (J57) and his mom Tahlequah (J35) are both doing well. . It has been two years since Tahlequah lost her young calf who lived for only half an hour, whom she carried for 17 days in a Tour of Grief that garnered worldwide attention. . The endangered Southern Resident population of the Salish Sea continue to face the challenges of their declining food source of chinook salmon, boat noise and traffic, and pollution. The birth of J57 is very good news, bringing the population of these whales to 73. Last week a humpback whale made its way down the St. Lawrence River, all the way to Montreal, Quebec. We’ll never know why it charted this course so far from its ocean salt water home.. and sadly it was found floating belly up in the shallows yesterday. It was a welcome distraction from our current events for the Montrealer’s who got to witness it’s magical displays of breaching over the course of a few days before it died. This shot of a dolphin and her newborn calf racing towards Small Skellig was taken 4 years ago by my then 13 year old niece, Riona. And today is Riona’s 17th birthday. Ive taken thousands of pictures and Im still dreaming of capturing a moment this good. This is the photo thats on my phones lock screen. Riona took it on a little Samung camera phone and I dont know what divinely-inspired timing was at play but I didnt even have to straighten the horizon line of the original photo. Anyone who’s ever taken a picture from a moving boat knows that it’s virtually impossible to get a level shot. Can we give her a like to encourage her to keep taking awesome photos? It’s #SharkWeek, which gives us a great excuse to share some photos and stories from the CCS archives, and some brand new stuff too! To start us off, a little something from this weekend... The Center for Coastal Studies aerial survey team (Amy and Brigid) had a VERY short flight on Saturday (thanks, low cloud ceiling!), but in the brief time they were in the air they spotted 26 Common #dolphins, a #humpbackwhale, and five #greatwhitesharks! Four of the sharks were swimming about 70 yards (65 meters) offshore at Head of the Meadow beach in North Truro; the fifth was about 1/2 nautical mile off Wellfleet. Orca calf mortality is high, often due to toxic contaminants in the mother’s milk (pollutants in the ocean). Mola Mola! I’ve been waiting to see one of these since I learned about them. They’re one of the weirdest fish out there, weighing in at a maximum of 1000kg, they mostly feed on jellyfish. Their body is covered in rough denticles similar to sharks which I just learned after having such a close look at this huge fish! This particular one was about 6 ft long by 8ft tall. Got to play around with some majestic creatures yesterday. Once upon a time, when I was just a wee lad of 3, maybe 4 years old, I was obsessed with this song called “Baby Beluga” by #raffi who was a legend in my young eyes at the time. If you’re wondering whether or not I had that song on repeat in my head the entirety of the interaction in which these photos were taken, the answer is yes. Aluah was a female, she was feisty but she let me dance with her. As the practice of keeping cetaceans in captivity continues to be put under fire in the West (and rightly so), it’s becoming ever more popular and prominent in the East, with wild killer whales at the forefront of a long line of victims. While a range of oceanic dolphins are targeted by the captivity trade, orcas are among the most prized, with a single untrained orca fetching between one and five million dollars. Unfortunately, captive breeding programmes (although unethical themselves) are unable to keep up with the demand for captive orcas, so up-and-coming marine parks turn to wild-capture operations instead. Between 2012 and 2018 more than 30 orca calves were taken from the wild for the captivity trade. While 10 lucky individuals were released, the majority ended up in concrete tanks to be exploited for the rest of their lives. In the case of Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park’s four orcas, they’ve already been trained and put on display, and are already suffering the consequences of confinement. This vicious cycle of brutality and exploitation can be broken. By reducing profits or even causing losses, the demand is cut, aquariums are shut down and wild-captures are prevented.
