Wish you a wonderful Weevil Wednesday! 😎😜🎉 Male Poplar leaf rolling weevil - Bysticus populi ( hope it’s ok that’s not a true weevil ;) see text below I love these colors 😍😍😍 Manual stack of 5 pictures - this little one was moving so it was not easy for me (with just rudimentary photoshop skills) to stack the pictures manually 🤪🤪🤪🙈 - I tried this after about 4 times another row of pictures with Helicon focus failed when saving at the end 🤯🤬😭🙈 📷 Sony A7rii - 60mm Macro Laowa - twin macro flash with softboxes As a form of brood care, the females roll one or more leaves into a coil that serves as food for the larvae. The beetle first partially gnaws the petiole near the base. This will cause the leaves to wither, making them easier to roll. Then the sheet is twisted into a cigar-shaped roll. During this activity, an egg is wrapped in the roll several times. On average, four to six eggs are laid per wrap, the largest number observed being 15 eggs. With a brown, quick-drying secretion from the anal gland, the end of the wrap is glued to the winding below. The female needs two to five hours to produce a coil. Each female makes several wraps. For grapevines and other large leaves, one leaf is enough for a wrap. With smaller or harder leaves, such as the pear, a wrap consists of several leaves. The leaf wraps later fall off and the larvae pupate in the ground. The newly hatched adults appear in the same autumn or in the following spring. As October approaches, spotted lanternflies will begin to gear up to lay their eggs. Egg masses contain 30-50 eggs and are covered by females with a mud-like gray substance which cracks over time and looks a bit like mortar. The insects are not picky in where they lay them – you may find masses on trees, fences, and outdoor furniture, among other objects. You can help by locating these egg masses on your own property and destroying them! It is possible that eggs can survive if scraped onto the ground, so scrape egg masses into a bag or container with rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer, or a bleach solution and dispose.
