Hi Lovelies! October is approaching which means that Breast Cancer awareness month is about to kick off. This should be a monthly check for you period. This is a cause very near & dear to my heart. I lost my bestie Nadine Parsons @thrivetoshine July 25, 2019 to MBC - metastatic breast cancer which means it’s spread to her bones and is stage 4. Nadine was diagnosed at 35 just before her 36th Birthday and had gone for a check that year and was told it’s a cluster of cysts but it clearly wasn’t. She passed at age 37. Nadine’s message was of advocacy and to fight to make sure that you get the proper checks needed even if you’re under 50 which is when screening for Breast Cancer starts. @rethinkbreastcancer focuses on women under 40 and I’m thrilled to be part of the @give.a.care program which sells our NADINE, LYNDA & ROSEMARY matte long lasting lipsticks. We do this in Nadine’s honour and all the rest of the brave women fighting this horrible battle. My title is a rendering of the original French title. I pull and stretch the song, and divide the original three parts among the six pianos. Meeting for the first time since COVID-19 forced the closure of the State Capitol in March, the Connecticut Senate voted 35-1 Tuesday for final passage of legislation allowing no-excuse absentee ballot voting as a public health precaution in November. Gov. Ned Lamont promised to quickly sign the measure that temporarily expands the definition of “sickness” in state voting law to cover concern over getting COVID during the pandemic, rather than being ill and unable to vote. It gives every voter the ability to vote by absentee ballot. An executive order provides voters with the same option in the August 11 primary. It’s the only reason to get out of the house, quite honestly – unless you find something that is exciting and motivating. You have to trust your instincts and I like flying without a net. I enjoy that risk-taking aspect. It’s exciting for me. Q: There are very rare relationships between actors like the one you’ve had with Danny Devito. Tell me about this lifelong friendship. You guys have worked together often. Is your friendship and professional relationship hard to balance? A: It’s seamless. It’s the beauty about working with friends. I mean, I know now why people like to work together. It’s because you don’t have to go through that formality, that dance of introductions, the this-and-that. There’s a familiarity. We’re old buddies and so in the limited time that we have together; there’s a comfort factor. Plus, he’s funny. He’s funny off the set or on the set. He can’t help himself. Our marginalized, outnumbered, under represented continue to gain ground using the language and text that lives in this greatest of documents. Things are changing very quickly today. That’s probably good and it’s bad. I hope we continue to use the Constitution as our ultimate guide because it’s designed to protect the INDIVIDUAL from the tyranny of the majority. Happy Birthday to Samuel Adams, born #OnThisDay, September 27, 1722 in Boston, Massachusetts. This signer of the Declaration of Independence was a politician, brewer, and businessman. In the years leading up to the revolution, Adams was one of the first to advocate for independence and was elected to the Massachusetts Assembly where he organized the resistance against British taxation. In 1765, Adams and the Loyal Nine, a precursor to the Sons of Liberty, led the Stamp Acts resistance in the Stamp Act Riots. It should come as no surprise Adams also played an integral role during the Boston Tea Party. During a tense meeting at the Old South Meeting House regarding the removal of the Dutch East India Tea on ships in the harbor, it is alleged he rose from a pew and declared, This meeting can do nothing more to save the country! Historians believe this was a signal for the Sons of Liberty to destroy the tea while Adams remained at the Meeting House as a distraction. In 1774, Adams was appointed as a representative in the Continental Congress, where he was known as a persistent advocate for independence; two years later, he signed the Declaration of Independence. Adams retired from Congress in 1781 to support the Massachusetts constitution, and was elected as Governor in 1794. Adams is largely associated with the craft brewery named in his honor in 1985 by Boston Beer Company founder Jim Koch. Adams was never a brewer himself but did work for his fathers malt house, which was sold to breweries. A sole advertisement from the Boston Evening Post in 1751 remains, reading Strong beer, or malt for those who incline to brew it themselves; to be sold by Samuel Adams, at a very reasonable rate. Adams’ legacy lives on strongly in Boston; a statue of him stands outside Faneuil Hall and his grave is one of the most frequently visited in the Granary Burying Ground. On this day in 1786, Major General Nathanael Greene died on his plantation in Mulberry Grove, Georgia. Nathanael Greene was born in Potowomut, Rhode Island, to the Greene family, a prosperous Quaker family. In the 1770’s Greene became active against the British and helped establish the Kentish Guards, a state militia. After the Battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the establishment of the Continental Army, and Greene was appointed general. Greene served under Washington in the Boston campaign, New York and New Jersey Campaign, and the Philadelphia campaign, before being appointed quartermaster general of the Continental Army in 1778. In 1780, Washington appointed Greene as the commander of the Continental Army in the southern theater, leading successful campaigns of guerrilla warfare against British general Cornwallis. After the war, he retired to a farm in Georgia, hoping to become a successful planter, but died there in 1786. General Greene built a house in Coventry, which stands to this day. Happy birthday to George Bernard Shaw, born on this day in 1856! A leading literary and public figure of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Shaw was famous for his wit and his controversial political and ideological views. He was close friends with Kathleen Scott (1878-1947), who created this bronze bust of the writer c. 1928. Scott studied art at the Slade School of Art before working under the tuition of eminent sculptor, Auguste Rodin, in Paris. Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was a 19th century American writer, poet, editor, and literary critic. He was known for his short stories, poetry and tales of mystery and macabre. His $30-million gift – the largest in SAIT’s history – sparked the creation of the new School for Advanced Digital Technology #hereatSAIT. 🙌 We’re so excited to feature him as one of our #SAITfaces! ☺️ “SAIT has been in the technology business since day one. It’s always been the place to go,” says Bissett. “When I was reaching my 80th year, I knew I was going to have to deal with my assets from my passing. I wanted to do something seminal in Alberta. I wanted to create something new, different and focused on future prosperity. “I see every day the importance of technology in every field, whether it’s investment management, oil and gas or agriculture. The advance in the associated technologies is breathtaking. If we’re not fully competitive in these skills in the global economy, we’re doomed to be a nation falling behind.” On Sept. 9, Bissett’s vision officially became a reality through the launch of the School for Advanced Digital Technology in in the historic Odd Fellows building in downtown #yyc. The transformative initiative supports SAIT’s vision of boosting the local talent pool with tech-savvy grads who get hired. This is David Bissett’s second gift to SAIT. #OTD in 1863, Robert Shaw was killed while leading the 54th Massachusetts Infantry in an assault on Battery Wagner. This is the The Robert Gould Shaw and Massachusetts 54th Regiment Memorial located across Beacon St from the Massachusetts State House. The 54th Massachusetts was the first all-black volunteer regiment to be raised and organized in the North, east of the Mississippi River. Unlike what is portrayed in the movie Glory, the 54th was very well equipped and trained. Also unlike the impression given in the movie, the majority of the soldiers were free born men from northern states and not former slaves. Though raised in Massachusetts, the men came from every state in the Union. According to the NPS, when first organized in early 1863, there were more men from Pennsylvania in the 54th Massachusetts than from any other state, including Massachusetts. This was because the African American population of Massachusetts in the 1860s was simply not large enough to field an entire regiment on its own. Indeed, in all of Massachusetts in 1860, there were only 1,973 black men of fighting age (18-45). When the regiment departed Boston for the seat of war on May 28, 1863, it numbered 1,044 officers and men. Of this number, only 133 (just 13%) called Massachusetts home. 155 men came from Ohio, while 183 were recruited in New York. Well over 300, the most from any one state, came from Pennsylvania. The 54th Regiment also fought in an engagement on James Island, the Battle of Olustee, and at Honey Hill, South Carolina before their return to Boston in September 1865. Only 598 of the original 1,007 men who enlisted were there to take part in the final ceremonies on the Boston Common. In the last two years of the war, it is estimated that over 180,000 African Americans served in the Union forces and were instrumental to the Union’s victory. Augustus Saint-Gaudens, one of the premier artists of his day, took nearly 14 years to complete this high-relief bronze monument of the 54th. La feuille porte ses mots tirés de la Genèse Et la lumière fût. La Bible est en effet le premier livre sorti dune presse typographique. In his face expression you can clearly see that also Rembrandt knew that his time was coming. Shoutout to creator/designer Nikola Salvi!! Although he didn’t get to see to the end of the creation of the Trevi in 1762, his designs mostly made it to the end product before he died in 1751. Salvi’s designs of the Trevi truly were the best-in all of Rome and the surrounding areas-as he was picked in a contest by Pope Clement XII of the best possible structure. Salvi oversaw the construction of the Trevi for 19 years until his death. Following his passing, Giuseppe Pannini, another exceptional artist, finished up Nikola’s work. However, the Trevi was so amazing that it had to wait for the perfect artist to complete it (it couldn’t settle for second best). Before Nikola’s work was chosen by Clement , Pope Urban VIII had chosen Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1629 to design a fountain, though the idea died out with Urban soon after. #trevifountain #bffsince1730 - @trevi.fountain on Instagram
