This post is for friends, supporters and loved ones whom we have not yet had the opportunity to let know in person. Iain and I, while still holding a great amount of respect for each other, have decided to part ways personally. This past year has been one of the most difficult of my life, and in the end, our work overtook our personal relationship in a way that was irreparable. This announcement is coming some time after we officially separated, so weve turned off comments and, while I appreciate the sentiment, ask that you do not reach out with condolences as were both now in a very good place personally. These past few months of lockdown, while Ive lost an incredible amount with Supernova, has actually given me the much needed time Ive needed to hit pause, process and re-evaluate what matters most in my life, and re-build the sense of self that had become so lost. It has taken me a lot of time and work to get back into a positive space, and Iain and I are happy to say that we will always remain friends and business partners as we look towards the next years of our lives. I truly dislike social media challenges and have never participated in one :) But this one gives me an opportunity to share an image of Forough Farrokhzad (فروغ فرخزاد). One of the most influencial and controversial Iranian poets and film makers whom remains so very underrepresented as an international icon. As a teenager, Foroughs poetry gave me courage to want to know and admire my body as a woman; to not be ashamed of my sexual desires; to reject the idea and taboo of female virginity while living in Iran where such perspectives to women bodies were forced as dominant culture and valued in a patriarchal society. Forough gave me (and many other girls and women) hope as a young woman and continues to inspire my work and thinking beyond binary views of women bodies in which liberation is defined in a black and white box of (Islamic) veiling vs (westernized) nudity. One of her most known poem lines is: Remember the flight, the bird is mortal and I do my best to live by that daily. My Mamaw has been living on this Earth for 88 years now!! She said she’s not having anymore birthdays 😂 she’s going in ‘reverse’ now 🥴🎉 lol Her name is Donna Chance and she’s the golden matriarch of our Chance family 👑😍 What an incredible soul to have been thrown so many twists this year, and just keeps rollin with it! From city life to ranch life and everything in between, She’s been my greatest teacher of self care, nurturing, cleanliness (inside and out) and systemic organization of the home 🏡 (she’s obviously a Virgo ♍️😅🧹✨🤓) ... and has exemplified to me a powerful depth of faith and integrity that surpasses all of my life’s worries. My sister and I are Multi-Racial. . It’s always been incredibly hard to be accepted by both Black and White people. When we were young I remember my Grandma and grandpa both talking shit about our Dad because he was black. We never felt fully embraced by most of our family. Thank you Mom Andrea Starbird for always telling us that we are beautiful and that we should love ourselves just the way we are!! . Today my sister got attacked online by a black chick- and it’s such a disgrace 😤 she was claiming that my sister has been trying to claim that she’s full black or what they call “blackfishing” 🤭 (Makes me so sad!) . Nahhhh we just out here dodging bullshit judgement from almost most people that don’t actually know us!! Gets my blood boiling because it’s always been so hard wherever we go. . It’s taken YEARS for both of us to feel comfortable and confident in our skin. . Throughout my teen years I had to hide my black heritage from my white friends. I’ve always felt more comfortable around black people but wasn’t ever sure if I was black enough to hang. . This is what it FEELS like to be Multi-Racial- and we must take the time to heal this conversation. SO many multi-racial people don’t have the space to speak our minds and hearts- so we end up feeling outcasted and depressed about our looks or mixed lineage. . ⚡️I GIVE thanks for our UNIQUE beauty!
