Новият му собственик се опита да го обучи да стане „танцуваща мечка“. По време на една от „атракционните обиколки“ шофьорът на буса, в който е превозван младия мечок рязко ускорява и Добри се удря в стърчаща метална част на клетката,, в резултат на което наранява лявото си око и загубва зрението си. Въпреки травмата Добри оцелява и за наша радост през 2003 г. става обитател на Парка за танцуващи мечки край Белица. Оттогава насам мечокът се развива добре като живее в условия възможно най-близки до естествените за вида му. Той успява да преодолее липсата на зрение, благодарение на изключително силните си слух и обоняние, като познава сектора, в който живее много добре. Witnessed a Grizzly Bear burying a Bull Elk today. You know, circle of life and all that. According to a forest ranger we overheard, the elk had been gored when fighting another elk. It was the mighty grizzly bear that inspired me to work on my long-term conservation story and book Freedom To Roam on linking wildlife habitat along the Rocky Mountains. Grizzly bears are a true symbol for wilderness. Thirty years ago there were less than 150 grizzly bears left in the Greater Yellowstone area. Thanks to strict protection under the Endangered Species Act numbers of the iconic bears have recovered since then from near extinction to more than 700 individuals. This recovery, however, led to Trump administration to de-list the species from federal protection resulting in Wyoming and Idaho to issue trophy hunting licenses for as many as 23 bears. Just two days before the sports hunt of grizzlies in the area would have started this fall, federal judge Dana Christensen ordered that the grizzly bears kept their protection status. Less than 2,000 grizzlies call the Lower 48 states their home today, compared to more than 100,000 in historical times. Their habitat has been strongly fragmented, so the remaining bears are distributed over several island populations. Bears are facing increased pressure from the effects of climate change, like the loss of important food sources like whitebark pine seeds. It is essential to continue to work on restoring bear habitat, creating wildlife corridors and reconnecting the Yellowstone bears with the other populations of the Lower 48. Great first night out of bear season with @rexkwolf and @bigsky_ty. Spotted this guy right away after a snow blizzard stopped and the sun poked through the clouds. A very underestimated hike... several drainages, a few doubts, and about four hours later, we finally found an opening in the trees to set up for a shot. One whiffed opportunity on my part, with a follow up shot that found its mark and I notched my 2020 tag with my best bear to date. It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of Como’s beloved polar bear, Buzz. Buzz’s health declined due to suspected neurological issues and after all treatment options were exhausted with the animal care and veterinary team, the difficult decision to humanely euthanize the 24 year old bear was made. Buzz, and twin brother Neil, were born December in 1995 at the Louisville Zoo and came to Como Zoo in 2001 from San Diego. They were named for the Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Buzz enjoyed rolling in the dirt, patrolling the exhibit, and bossing around his brother. He was an active participant in the zoo’s operant conditioning training program and was the third polar bear in the country to allow zookeepers to draw blood voluntarily (Neil was the second). Buzz has been a proud ambassador of conservation and will be missed by all. - @comozooconservatory on Instagram

Sloth bears are important seed dispersers for several tree and plant species. They scatter the seeds of the fruits they eat far and wide, helping floral species to regenerate. However, they can also disperse seeds without consuming them. We started noticing in our camera-trap images that tens of seeds would be stuck on the shaggy coats of these bears and their cubs!
