So this happened today... A wall of shelves in our kiln room collapsed, completely destroying weeks of work and damaging our kiln. We have been working so hard these past few months. With a 1-year old at home and no nanny, our days are spent trying to do as much work as we can during his naps, before one of us cares for him while the other one continues to work. And the second shift starts as soon as he goes to bed at night, as this is when we can do the most work. So this is truly heartbreaking to see all these hours of work lost in seconds. But thankfully, none of us were in the room at that moment. We had just finished unloading the kiln and were about to reload it but luckily we had just stepped out of the room. We had been meaning to change these shelves for a while but we’ve been working so hard we haven’t had a minute for anything else. Trip Plan Tuesday. 🐾 Bear sightings & some encounters have been prevalent this summer. 🐾 Our friends @wildsafebc recommend; . Surprising a bear or encountering a food-conditioned bear should be avoided. Here are some #tripplantuesday tips to reduce the chances of this happening: 🐻 Watch for bear signs like scat, tracks, freshly overturned logs, fresh claw marks on trees 🐻Talk or sing to avoid surprising a bear. Be cautious around running water, thick brush or high wind that may mask your presence. Bear bells are not recommended as the high-pitched tinkle does not travel as far and is not recognized as a human. 🐻Be aware of your surroundings and do not use headphones when hiking, biking or running in bear country. 🐻Manage your attractants and never put someone else at risk by leaving organics behind. Pack out what you pack in. Tossing organics (apple cores and banana peels) can attract wildlife to a roadside which may result in a vehicle collision. 🐻Avoid hiking alone. Travelling with another person results in more noise and may also help dissuade a bear from approaching. 🐻 Keep pets leashed or under control when in bear country. In a review of black bear attacks, dogs were involved in over 50% of black bear inflicted injuries on humans*. Dogs may be perceived as a potential threat or prey. 🐻 Use extra caution in bear habitat and where sightlines are poor. This includes berry bushes with ripe fruit, salmon-bearing streams and other areas bears are known to frequent. 🐻 If you find a carcass leave the area immediately and notify the Conservation Officer Service and/or landowner. 🐻 Take training such as a Wildlife Awareness and Safety Course offered by WildSafeBC that shows the “Staying Safe in Bear Country” video. A summary of the video content is available @wildsafebc 🐻Carry bear spray and be able to access it quickly. Do not carry it in your pack or attached to your bike. 🐻Learn more. If heading to a Provincial or Federal park, check their websites for wildlife alerts or safety considerations. Pictures from hikes to 3 lovely waterfalls including Skinny Dip Falls, Laurel Creek Falls and Spruce Flats Falls, and 1 overloook at Craggy Gardens off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Love hiking in the mountains ⛰ and need to explore more! All 4 of these hikes were relatively short (maximum length of 2.6 miles round trip) but were all very steep (hardest was Spruce Flats because it is not paved like Laurel Creek Falls and very narrow and rocky at times). Overall very doable by novice hikers as long as you go slow and steady. I was really excited to experience the North Island for the first time. I knew wherever we would end up it was going to be beautiful but what we found blew away my expectations. This island never ceases to amaze me with its endless pristine west coast wonders. (After a long drive to the northern tip of the island we took our canoe with surf boards and rubber dingy in tow down a tidal river where it took us to a the long and beautiful white sand banks that would be our home for the next three nights. Power Tower is an installation made in Pals beach, province of Girona. Is a protest against the sentences that the Spanish justice is decreeing to the people of @t66_judici who demonstrated against the MAT Towers, a harmful Transmission Towers which were built through lobbies and bribes to politicians. Few months ago this towers fell down as a result of a storm but this was not published in any media. Curiously when we built our wooden tower, a person in charge of the Environment of the Town Hall appeared and declared that this installation was totally illegal and it couldnt stay there in case it could fall with the wind or hurt someone in the beach. The goverment want to remove our tower because it is dangerous but MAT Towers that are a big danger to the natural environment (and more dangerous for people than our installation) are allowed to continue there. 2 happy summit pups! . We are lucky Albertans who get to call Banff our playground. Rhumba is, in my opinion, the best adventure dog and loved this very steep ascent. Aspen was not to be outdone and hiked almost the entire 4.5 km up / 1015m Elevation! Despite this, she was still too wiggly to sit still for a pic with her big sis. Don’t worry, we brought a backpack for her to ride the entire way down. Leash training is the worst and both Aspen and I strongly dislike it but we’ll get there...I hope. BREAKING NEWS: It rained on our walk yesterday!! We took this picture before the rain, but by the time we got back to the car, we were blissfully soaked! The past week spent inside our house has not been fun. Our windows are shut, our air purifier is on, and every time we open the door to the outside world our purifiers sensor instantly changes from blue to red. We have been feeling so cooped up and exhausted, so the dissipation of the smoke is very welcomed. Inspired by the opus alchemicum and chemical-physical reactions of minerals, we developed a simulacrum based on one of the shapes generated by our trained generative model. The first objective of our weekend mission was splitting up into small terms to deploy a total of six stream water temperature monitors in strategic locations throughout the watershed. Why monitor the water temperature? In our attempt to understand how a watershed that was known to be practically “dead” made a miraculous recovery, we’ve hypothesized several potential answers. One being that the brook trout may have adapted to differing water temperature and/or have become genetically wired to move great distances through the watershed to find spring holes and seeps to take refuge at times of distress. Our temperature loggers will remain in their locations for one year. After which, teams will then head back out and retrieve the monitors using their gps coordinates, allowing us to download and interpret the data. We’re hoping that getting a grasp on the temperature fluctuations in our watershed will help us add one more piece to this puzzle! #catchthepower - @troutpowerorg on Instagram

We’re into Week 3 of the first expedition! The crew on the 9 boats have cleared almost 50 TONS of debris so far. That’s TWICE what we thought we’d do in the ENTIRE expedition! Currently, Some boats are loading lift bags of debris off the beaches onto a barge now by helicopter, while others continue to clear debris from other beaches. Fluted serpentine arrowhead. There is some debate among archaeologists as to why this feature was used by the people that came to be called the Clovis culture. The way I understand it, it was so widely used among that culture and absent from others that it’s essentially diagnostic..meaning that if you find a point with a center groove, it is a Clovis point. I am far from an expert on any of this, and I know some of you are, so please correct me on anything I get wrong. As for the why, I’ve seen articles that suggest that it somehow made them more impact resistant, while others focus on the artistic aspect. @huntprimitive has a great video where he shows that it may have been used to be able to stick the point into a split stick, rather than having to remove material from the shaft to accommodate it. The first time I ended up with a fluted point was an accident. I was grinding one side and a big chunk chipped out of the middle, so I ground out the other side to make it match and was immediately reminded of the clovis points. When I went to mount it, I noticed that I didn’t have to remove nearly as much material from the arrow shaft to fit the point, which I saw as a benefit when using the somewhat weak western red cedar that I make my arrows from. It made good sense to me, that by removing some material from the center of the point, I could leave more of the wood in place, and end up with the same narrow profile. The stone is much stronger than the shaft, and I still left plenty of thickness in the groove, so I believe this ends up being a stronger configuration. On top of this, I also noticed that as long as the flutes line up well enough with the tip of the point, they essentially lock it into the shaft like a Lego piece, taking out the eyeball straightening and occasional point drift that happens if I’m not careful. It could in theory make the shaft more likely to split, but I tend to put a lot of wrapping behind my points, so I don’t expect that to be an issue here. It does take ten to fifteen minutes and a careful eye to grind the grooves, so it is more time consuming; but if it makes for a stronger connection, it’s probably worth it. - @nwprimate on Instagram

Collected a few deer toe bones from the woods. Sanded them down on a piece of sandstone until I was able to form them into hooks and then used a couple of broken/unfinished points to finish them. River days aren’t just for floating, they can also be for rockhounding! Shale bed outcrops we found along the river had some cool pyrite nodules like these minis shown here 💎⛏ Fossilized baculites with a pyrite coating have also been found in this rock formation. We packed up after the last trip of the season yesterday afternoon. The adventure dogs appreciated one last romp on the moraine, and the weather was tops. I’d like to give a huge shoutout to our staff who made the best of difficult circumstances this year. Despite the challenges, we still had a bangin’ season and I’m sure our clients appreciated the opportunities for escape and a little respite.
