Sea otters dont need sunglasses...🕶️ If youre curious as to why, for our 3rd day of #SeaotterAwarenessWeek and 7 days of #SeaOtterSavvy, be sure to check Dr. Sarah McKay Strobels most recent blog that explores some of her sensory research focused on sea otter vision. Wondering whether sea otters have developed specialised visual adaptations to assist them in navigating to and from their underwater and surface environments, Sarah and her colleagues sought to explore more about sea otter eyes. They found that the retina is similar to other nocturnal mammals, having lots of light sensitive cells, and that sea otters have a well-developed tapetum lacidum (what creates that eyeshine at night) at the back of the eye. Combined, this indicates that sea otter eyes may be sensitive enough to see well in both bright and low light (at the surface and underwater) - making the need for sunglasses unnecessary for our furry neighbors. Dear Readers, Nearly five years ago, during sleepless nights while recovering from surgery, I lay thinking about what I would like to write next. I had written a novel about Shakespeare, one about Jane Austen, and another inspired by King Arthur. But Shakespeare and Jane Austen and King Arthur are not the books that first got me excited about books. For me that honor went to the Hardy Boys and for many of my contemporaries similar series like Nancy Drew and Tom Swift first piqued their interest in reading. Yet the influence of these series had never, to my knowledge, been explored in a novel. As an antiquarian bookseller in the 1980s I had learned the true story of how the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and scores of other series for children were written. I knew that the authors of those two most famous series, Franklin W. Dixon and Carolyn Keene, didn’t really exist. Might this publishing history become part of a novel? While my copies of the Hardy Boys mysteries had long ago vanished from my shelf, I did have three books that belonged to my grandfather when he was a boy, the first three volumes of the Great Marvel series. Like the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, the Great Marvel books were created by Edward Stratemeyer. I pulled down a copy of one of them and examined the copyright page. New York, 1906 it said. That simple imprint led me down a rabbit hole of research into that city and that time period. I wanted to write about early children’s series books, the people who wrote them, and the amazing city in which some of those people lived. I wanted to incorporated long forgotten historical events that deserved to be remembered. And I wanted to frame it all with the quest of a twenty-first century author with his own demons to exorcize. In Escaping Dreamland I wanted to explore a city, create characters that readers could enjoy spending time with, and above all tap into those stories of our childhood and see how they can connect us with the past and with each other. The character from my film Remember to Forget, goes through his memories in an attempt to forget the one he loved. I remember visualizing it in my head, seeing him mashing each key on the typewriter, while he floats effortlessly through each of his memories... When we got to set I explained my vision to my crew. And later, when I returned, found a full-sized desk ratchet-strapped to a Fischer dolly. Typewriter. Desk Lamp. Whiskey. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 is that while I manifested this scene into reality, I also manifested things I didnt want... Casting my real life love interest at the time - 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘵 - as the lead actress was a bad idea. In a smoke machine daze, I manifested my first panic attack and lashed out on my actor in a fit of jealous paranoia. The experience was all too surreal. And while I look back on the finished work with pride and some regret, I cant help but be proud of how far I have come. “Ours” a project I worked on earlier this year commissioned by @rhizomedotorg launched today on the @newmuseum website. “The project takes the form of a corporate website for Ours, an outdoor brand that mobilizes conceptions of nature, the pastoral, freedom, and most of all America, as products and a lifestyle that are reserved for a privileged class. Images of campers and bikers enjoying pristine natural landscapes give way to calls to action for a “Malthusian Initiative,” inviting outdoor enthusiasts to become “activists” in an apparently genocidal effort to reduce the Earth’s population. In form and method, Ours recalls culture jamming and tactical media–kinds of artistic critique more popular in an earlier era of the internet–in order to defamiliarize and unpack the potent and dangerous ideological maneuvers that hide in plain sight in mainstream culture. Having the opportunity to roam the Kalahari seems like a huge privilege in today’s world, especially these days. But just a few hundred years ago, it was necessary for humans to roam constantly, to know the land and its animals. African wilderness was the crucible which forged human ingenuity. Our nomadic ancestors survived on this continent for 200 000 years by learning skills and making tools which ultimately led to the phone you’re holding right now. We’ve come a long way since then. We’ve gained knowledge, but we’ve also lost knowledge. The first people – the Southern African Bushmen - were (and are) more advanced than most of us in one crucial way: they understood fully that they were human animals, inseparable from the Earth. And they lived accordingly, obeying natural law. If they didn’t, they would have died out and we all wouldn’t be here today. Even though we now have incredible technology, we’re still human apes, fully dependent on this planet. Perhaps we’ve become “over-civilised”, relying on technology not just for our survival, but for our sense of meaning, connection and identity even? Hunting and gathering wasn’t always idyllic, but I doubt our modern lifestyles are any more meaningful, even if life is now undoubtedly easier in some ways. We can let technology rule our lives, but then we’re just robots. Most of us live in cities, separated from pristine nature but the wild Earth is still our natural habitat. It’s no surprise that most people feel good when they spend time in nature. If you immerse yourself in a wilderness, like the Kalahari, you can rediscover a sense of wonder, mystery and awe in a way that the technological world can never match. Sometimes you can fall into a deeply self-forgetful state, almost like you’re melting into the landscape. It’s a natural, meditative feeling of oneness that the Bushmen could have experienced on a daily basis. A friend of mine calls it “primal joy”. These fascinating needle-like termite mounds are found on the fringes of the Bangweulu swamps in Northern Zambia. Termites make the mounds by filling their mouths with moist soil and mixing it with their saliva, which acts as a cement. Although they are very hard and appear solid, the walls of the mounds are filled with tiny holes that allow outside air to enter and permeate the structure. Today’s Grouse counting team, populations are assessed before any shooting programs can be made. Today using these dogs a count was done over a area which is counted twice every year to assess the density of the Grouse stock. By walking the same route each year the birds which are flushed by the dogs are counted. This gives a good indication of the number of breeding pairs in the area. Later in the summer the area will be counted again to establish how well they have breed. A true Goat!! I’ve know Alex since we were 14 years old, he has always been one step ahead of the crowd. Whatever he does he does it to the absolute limit and then some. To say he has been an inspiration to me would be an understatement. From snowboarding when we were teenagers to filmmaking as a career, I always admired his dedication and relentless hard work. Axl was diagnosed with brain cancer in May and underwent a massive surgery in June to remove 80% of it. Over the next year he will be doing radiation treatments and chemo to battle the remaining 20%.
