Winter came early and stayed long on the northern Great Plains along the edge of the mountains. Survival during the season of cold winds and deep snow depended on the people’s ability to select a good location for their camp and store up sufficient provisions. Summers were devoted to the buffalo hunt. Entire villages followed the great herds across the prairies. Men did the killing and women prepared and packed the meat and hides. After the months of hunting, a winter camp was established, usually among low hills which would provide protection from howling blizzards. Proximity to a river or permanent stream was also a major consideration in the selection of a camp site. Through the fall, the camp was hard at work in preparation for the approaching winter. Women dried buffalo meat in the sun and tanned hides for clothing and warm robes. Children gathered edible roots and berries for storage. The men hunted close by for elk, deer, antelope, and other small game. Wood was gathered and stacked near the lodges. The horses were closely herded until they got used to grazing comfortably near the camp. The bitter wind swept down off the mountain slopes finally, bringing the ice and snow. The people were warm and secure in their lodges which were covered and floored with buffalo hides. Smoke of the small cooking fires escaped from opened flaps at the peak of the lodges. After the long months of hunting and preparing for the winter, now families drew closer together. Children learned tribal traditions from stories told by the elders. Young girls helped their mother with the work, and boys dreamed of a coming spring when they might be allowed to join their fathers riding out to hunt. #johnfordclymer #fineart #oil #painting #winter #plains #mountains #survival #camp #hunting #buffalo #elk #deer #antelope #wood #horses #traditions #stories @clymermuseum @cowboyartistsofamerica @westernartfans @bashasmarkets @ajsfinefoods @foodcityaz @visit_arizona @visitarizona @chandlerlifestyle #chandleraz #thingstodoinchandler - @bashacollection on Instagram

The strangest weapons of ww2, the anti-tank dogs. During the 1st world war, dogs were important for all the belligerents and were used for a lot of things. So the Soviets had the idea of using dogs to destroy enemy tanks. So today we are going to see the most famous strange weapon of this project. In the 1930s therefore, the Soviets built schools to train dogs, first with circus trainers and hunters. The initial idea of sending a dog which then set a bomb under a tank by cutting a rope with its teeth is abandoned because it is far too difficult for a dog. German Shepherds (the dogs chosen by the Soviets) were then used as Kamikazes: The next plan was that the dog would die, but the bomb would successfully detonate. The dog would run underneath a tank, with something sticking out of the top of the bomb, so once it made contact with the tank, it would explode . When the Germans invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, anti-tank dogs were therefore used during the Battle of Moscow. But everything did not go as planned. Indeed, the Soviets had trained their dogs on Soviet tanks running on diesel, while the German tanks used gasoline. Thus, the smell of the dogs did not work and in case of the presence of Soviet tanks, we can easily guess the result. In addition, the dogs had been trained to position themselves under immobilized tanks. But in a combat situation and with all the noise that entails, the dogs were frightened, even more so as the tanks moved forward. Most often, they waited for the tank to stop but the Germans killed them long before. Finally, very often sent as a sacrifice, the dogs retreated in panic towards the trenches where their masters were. When they jumped into the trenches, they exploded, killing all the soldiers around them. A few thousand dogs were used, and, despite some individual successes, most were withdrawn from service after 1943. 《 The Historians Alliance》 @stosstruppen1918 @_the_great_war @world_war_pics1914.45 @ww1photos_info @historicalmemesandstuff @world_at_war_33 @secretsofhistory1789 @panzers_colorized @ww1.facts @papabismarck @ww2documents @ww1.metaldetecting - @ww2_forgotten_battles on Instagram

𝑼𝑵𝑨 𝑷𝑨𝑻𝑬𝑻𝑰𝑪𝑨 𝑺𝑪𝑶𝑵𝑭𝑰𝑻𝑻𝑨.

TODAY IN HISTORY. In the first major land battle of the #CivilWar a large #Union force under General McDowell is routed by a #Confederate #army under General Beauregard. Three months after the Civil War erupted at #FortSumter , #Union #military command still believed that the #Confederacy could be crushed quickly and with little loss of life. In July, this overconfidence led to a premature offensive into #Virginia by General McDowell. Searching out the Confederate forces, McDowell led 34,000 troops toward the railroad junction of #Manassas located just 30 miles from #Washington D.C. Alerted by the Union advance, General Beauregard massed some 20,000 troops there and was soon joined by 9,000 more troops by railroad. On the morning of July 21, hearing of the proximity of the two opposing forces, hundreds of civilians–men, women, and children–turned out to watch the first major battle of the Civil War. The fighting commenced with three Union divisions crossing the Bull Run stream, and the Confederate flank was driven back to Henry House Hill. However, at this strategic location, Beauregard had fashioned a strong defensive line anchored by a brigade of Virginia infantry under General Thomas J. Jackson. Firing from a concealed slope, Jackson’s men repulsed a series of Federal charges, winning Jackson his famous nickname “Stonewall.” Meanwhile, Confederate #cavalry under J.E.B. Stuart captured the Union #artillery and Beauregard ordered a counterattack on the exposed Union right flank. The rebels came charging down the hill, yelling furiously, and McDowell’s line was broken, forcing his troops in a hasty retreat across Bull Run. The retreat soon became an unorganized flight, and supplies littered the road back to Washington. Union forces endured a loss of 3,000 men killed, wounded, or missing in action while the Confederates suffered 2,000 casualties. The scale of this bloodshed horrified not only the frightened spectators at Bull Run but also the U.S. government in Washington, which was faced with an uncertain military strategy in quelling the “Southern insurrection.” #militaryhistory #history #todayinhistory #thisdayinhistory - @understandhistoryofficial on Instagram
- @marathas96 on Instagram

#karyarakyatdms #karyarakyatdlsi #karyaasosiasihmci #History #napoleonbonaparte #napoleonwars #leipzig #archery #dewanliterasisejarah - @patton_3rd_army on Instagram
#SubmarineSunday ⚓ On July 31, 1945 USS Bullhead (SS-332) left Fremantle, Australia on her third war patrol. They were headed to the Java Sea to join a wolfpack with USS Capitaine (SS-336) and USS Puffer (SS-268); then, on September 5, they proceeded to Subic Bay to patrol on their own. Bullhead arrived in the area on August 6, but Capitaine did not arrive until August 13. On August 12, Capitaine ordered Bullhead to take position the following day in a scouting line with Capitaine and Puffer. There was no reply and on August 15, Capitaine reported, Have been unable to contact Bullhead by any means since arriving in area.” At the time, the area was fairly crawling with subs—USS Cod (SS-224), USS Chub (SS-329), Capitaine, and Puffer, as well as the British HMS Taciturn and HMS Thorough— it is difficult to point to one Japanese anti-submarine attack as the one which sank Bullhead. However, the most likely one occurred on August 6, 1945, when an enemy army plane attacked with depth charges (when Bullhead was presumably cruising on the surface off the coast of Bali). The pilot claimed two direct hits, and for ten minutes thereafter, there was a great amount of gushing oil and air bubbles rising in the water. Since the position given is very near the Bali coast, it is presumed that the proximity of mountain peaks shortened Bullheads radar range and prevented her from receiving a warning of the planes approach. Bullhead was the 52nd and final American submarine lost during World War II. She was lost with 84 men aboard. May they never be forgotten. Bullhead is credited with sinking four enemy ships (1,800 tons), damaging three ships (1,300 tons). She also rescued three airmen from a downed B-29. 📸 1: USN photo Print of the Bullhead (SS-332). - @vlad._.tepes._ on Instagram

- @historiadobrasil_oficial on Instagram

. . . . . . . . #napoleon #bonaparte #histoire #history #chateaudeversailles #versailles #france #monarchy #king #queen #secretsdhistoire #louisxvi #louisxiv #fontainebleau #paris #parisguide #parisphoto #chateau #palace #royal #royalty #monuments #castle #royalwedding #empereur #corse - @napoleonbonaparte_officiel on Instagram
