One month into la vie francaise. As a little girl, I dreamed of learning French and living in Paris straight out of college. At 35, Im fumbling through the language when my brain thinks in Spanish, and Lyon is not París (and better that way, this place is a DREAM) . . We are living outside of Lyon in a leafy, uppity village for the next six months. My husbands job sent him here for a stint, and because I work online and feared for a second lockdown, I panic bought a plane ticket. And, voila, here we are. . I thought that Spanish bureaucracy was a nightmare, but at least I can demand to be served and cite the BOE. Enrique is registered for school but Ive become a persona non grata in social services and town hall. If Ive learned one thing while living abroad, its that persistence pays off. And I would really like to use my Spanish holidays to have a good meal, la egoista que soy, without les enfants. . French parents are teaching me a lot, from phrases to remind a toddler not to put something in his mouth to letting kids discover at their own pace. Im more confident in leaving Enrique alone to explore, and hes more confident in trying foods and socializing. . On a personal note, I needed this. Last year was hard on my mental and physical health, and I struggled greatly with transitioning back to life in Seville. The small discoveries and the thrill of a new place have rejuvenated me, and I was craving a new challenge. France is not on my terms, and I know that six months while working and child minding will mean that I learn very little French. Even though it’s a decision I don’t regret (even with Covid hitting and changing my plans) there isn’t a day I don’t miss all the wonderful humans I met during my time there. I will be forever thankful for trusting me and letting me work in their kitchen and learn from them. It was an experience I will always cherish and one that made me grow as a baker and as a person. I miss all my girls at FOH, my sweet daughters, and all my family at BOH. Forever thankful to Betty, Jacky boy and Jackie girl 😬 for the love.
