Because our school was dropped right in the middle of the Sonoran Desert, the University of Arizona has always had to get creative with the use and collection of water resources. 💦 Old Main, arguably one of UAs most iconic locales, has some of the most pristine landscaping on campus. This type of landscaping is often referred to as Xeriscaping, which means that the plants are drought tolerant and little water is needed to maintain the landscape. However, the landscape design around Old Main is not just drought resistant, its a Water Harvesting Basin! 🌊 The Department of Soil, Water, and Environmental Science collaborated with this unique landscape and was able to install water harvesting basins that collect the rainwater that would have just been sitting there to evaporate! ☔️ In terms of environmental health, water is one of Arizonas biggest issues. Here are some tips on how you can save water, both on and off campus! You can... Collect Rainwater! We lived in this trailer in Reading when I was born, until we moved to an apartment in Price Hill when I was 6 years old. Note the TV antenna - no cable or satellite TV back in those days!
